  1. I hardly play my Corvette Standard now but I remember the part the rested on my leg (played sat down a lot) took on a blue colour from my jeans, kinda liked it and made it mine, each to their own as they say.

  2. Fortunately my band mates are always happy to help me, having had a hernia fixed this year, 3 lumbar spine discs with issues, plus a neurological disability that affects my balance and mobility, saying I have to take it easy nowadays is an understatement. As a young man (early 30's) invariably describribed as "Hench" or "A Unit", this is frustrating but necessary to continue doing what I love..

The only thing that usually puts me off straight away is a matching colour headstock if it's a maple fingerboard.

Just looks weird to me! YMMV!

Oh and by the way what is FSO? seen it a few times through this thread and never heard that before??

    FSO = Fender Shaped Object.

This thread has gone wild and I should reign myself in but… Jazz basses. I keep thinking I should have one and every time I put one in my trolley/basket, I chicken out. So why do people like them?

They are a Basscaster, the 4 string, long Strat with two single coils. The control plate looks like an afterthought. Block inlays? Not for me especially on a maple neck. With all the experience of the Precision, why keep the Elephant ears? Actually I know why, stock control and economies of scale.

The Precision was named because, unlike a double bass, it had frets and Precise note intonation was ( almost ) assured. Why the name Jazz?  Marketing ploy to open a new market?

So why  do I have a Aerodyne Jazz Bass? Well it has a P pickup in the neck position. I do like the 38mm nut neck width, the body contour is unique and the overall package moved me like no other bass has. What about the J bridge pickup you ask. Hardly ever used although it is now a DiMarzio humbucker.

If I ever succumb and buy a Jazz, it will have both pickups replaced with DiMarzio Jazz humbuckers. However I suspect  putting a Jazz in my basket trolley will

be as far as it gets.

Same for me with Aerodyne, I have a Yamaha BB PJ, never use the J pickup, just because I'm me and how my brain does or doesn't work, I might de solder it take it out and just leave the cover in place so it looks presentable.

Oh and de solder the tone pot while I'm there..

No Jazz basses, end of discussion.

Not a huge fan of maple boards, especially if they're so pale that they look like they were photoshopped onto the bass in real life.

    Anything else, let's talk.

I've never gotten on with Jazz Basses either, sound, shape, neck width, eurgh!

I see your disconnected tone pot, and raise with a P pickup wired directly to the output jack socket.

You should be aware though that just disconnecting the tone pot without using a different value volume pot or inserting a resistor f matching value to the tone pot to compensate is going to raise the resonance frequency of the pickup some, and thereby make the tone your pickup reproduces slightly brighter than it was with the tone pot?

Yep, that suits my purposes :) My next build will have a the pickup wired direct to the output jack.

  7. So originally I wanted to play guitar, left handed, but for a couple of reasons (large hands, neurological disability causing issues with my right hand), I ended up playing bass, right handed.

This was down to my Dad and he has supported me with my music ever since.

Obviously once I got hold of the bass and managed to get a sound out of it, my earliest influences, were my Uncle's cover band playing classic rock, Jack Bruce and John Entwistle being the bass players that first inspired me.

  8. I've tried a few different brands (Roto, Dunlop, Bass Centre, Status, GHS, La Bella) settled on GHS and La Bella, both I find really versatile depending how you EQ them (on a P bass) I use standard gauge GHS and really enjoy the La Bella medium gauge which is 109-49.

I play all styles using them and love the feel of medium gauge La Bella.

  9. Started with Roto RS66 on my first bass, chewed up the frets and didn't really get on with the feel of them.

My first proper bass was a Warwick and my Dad insisted it had to have Warwick black label strings.

I used NPS rounds for a long time, whilst still not really enjoying the sound on a fretted bass, I tried RS77's and Chromes but didn't get on with them.

One day I got hold of a cheap 90's Squier P bass put some Status flats on it and loved it, since then I've not used rounds on a fretted bass, I now use La Bella or GHS flats on fretted and NPS rounds on fretless.

  10. Thanks very much gents for your replies, the Platinum Pro EQ is a big chunk of money to spend but it looks as if it does everything I need and more, I could possibly dispense with my pedalboard..

Do the knobs/dials press in so that they don't move once set? Couldn't be sure from the photos but its really cool if that is the case.

  11. Bought a HB fretless violin bass, thought it would be cool and get me a DB ish sound, apart from picking up round the house and playing a couple of Buble songs, never really used it and it just sits there covered in dust, doesn't really improve the sound when plugged in, maybe a set of Pyramid Golds would improve things..

  12. I use a Thumpinator, have done for a couple of years but looking at an adjustable one as I'm still having to roll off the bass on the amp (4 string P Bass with flats), to be clear in a mix.

Hoping the Fishman Platinum Stage Pro will solve that and also give me some better EQ adjustment.
