I rather expected you to say John French.
I wouldn't mind a jam with the magic band (winged eel fingerling and friends) but I must say that Drumbo wasn't anywhere near Zig as a drummer.
2.
Live in Chiswick, work in the West End. I come up the A4/Cromwell Road every morning, usually in a highly entertaining manner. If you've seen/heard me at all, that'll be where. Those SM's really ROCK!
Must be a clone -- Akrapovic and all. Very nice bike, even with the pile-inducing seat.
3.
(a KTM SM with Akropovic system)
Do you live/work in Pimlico or Victoria by any chance? I may have seen (and heard) you around.
4. just the one I'm afraid (but I have about a dozen other instruments), so: 592!
5.
There's nothing I need. I've let it be known that I'm not fussed about presents, but if people do want to get me something, charity presents (chcieken for African villages, etc...), Amazon vouchers or money would be very much appreciated. I don't want chocolate, especially After Eights, Terrys chocolate oranges or Benedicts Mints. books on cockney rhyming slang. Viz annuals. Novelty calendar or any calendar for that matter as I use my smartphone for everything. 2008 diary for the reason above. After shave. I've made it clear that next year, I'm only buying presents for people's kids and I'll use the money I've saved on tat for the grown ups to get them something that really counts.
An admirable attitude. After all, we're grownups now, so if we need/want something we can get it ourselves, or if the money's short we can wait. What irks me most are the presents given for the sake of giving presents -- tat, as you rightly say.
6. Hey hey hey I'm selling my Sony MZ-B100 minidisc recorder/dictaphone with ECM-MS907 external mic. Also included are original headphones, instruction manual, carrying pouch, 25 blank discs and a carrying case. £150? + £10 or so for shipping. Sorry about the pics.
7. 'Whiskers on kittens and raindrops on roses, People with cheetos rammed right up their noses, Sheep in red lipstick, and crisp jammy biccies, These are a few of my favourite things!'
8. +1 UPS (US --> UK). Had a (heavy) rack preamp sent over. No problems except for a one-day delay in delivering. Ended up not having to pay custom fees, but that was just sheer luck.
9. I've sold Jim my Kern, which felt very much like selling a kidney. In spite of this he managed to make the transaction easy and pleasant. A very nice man whom I hope to meet again in the future.
10.
Just your recorded Audio data/Samples etc...and your Project folder for the Sequencer that you will be using.... [this will store all information relevant to your sequencer recordings].. And well worth checking out the link i posted above... A lot of eye candy stuff on windows XP....that reallly slows down the system when working with audio. If you Get a Audio ready system from a know music/audio dealer...they would have already done this.. Its amazing how much extra performance you can get after a XP tweek.. Garry
Good tips, thanks Garry. I've seen similar tweak pages for Vista, will give it a shot. Colda -- a tad too expensive, and a tad too large for me -- I only really need two inputs at most. MOTU also have something called the Ultralite IIRC, which is more commensurate to my needs, but that runs on firewire, so I'd need a pcmcia adapter; the ones on Maplin do not work with Vista... boo. I'll keep thinking, but as things stand, I think it may be better to start with the Alpha, then move on to the big MOTU or similar if/when my needs change.
11.
or you could buy a different laptop with firewire included - better option
Too late for that I'm afraid!
Also a good idea...is to use a external hard drive for your audio...it takes the load of your system drive... and Sequencers like this...you get better performance...
Thanks Garry, I do have a largish (160gb) external hard drive that might work for this purpose. Do you mean install the program and everything on the external drive and run it from there, or simply have the samples/recorded bits and so forth there?
12. The big presonus is a tad too... erm... big. I'm planning on keeping this on my desk and wouldn't like to have a separate studio rack. The small presonus looks good, but I won't have a firewire input on the laptop I'm going to buy. I seem to understand firewire works much better than USB 2, so I might look into getting a card adapter. Thanks for your help so far.
13. Tell it like it is, please. Cheerio root fifth
14. Now SOLD. Thanks 99ster, what a gent! Very nice to meet you.
15.
Is the DI out pre or post EQ? Is there a switch? I can't really make it out from the pics in the link
Post eq, as far as I can see. I don't think there's a switch. cheers, root fifth
16.
Are they!? They are balanced inputs not stereo inputs. Don't expect 4 channels of audio. Balanced leads cancel out any noise the leads picks up. G
I told you I was useless. Oh well. Any reasonably-priced alternatives to the Alpha that you know of?
17.
Yup XLR to Balanced (stereo) jack though. G
ooooh I thought the two channels were simply L and R, but no! They are both stereo channels! Quelle surprise! Well done g, you saved me some money and a considerable amount of embarrassment. cheerio
18. Good to hear Garry -- So I take it that the line input goes straight through without passing through the pre stage, right? I imagine I would have to get an xlr to 1/4" cable. It's all starting to make sense now. Time for more medicine! Quick! Cheers, root fifth
19. Garry -- thanks; I'll look at those as well; ZPQ and SkiingLizard -- That's the thing; I'm not going to use it on vocals a lot, but I have a bunch of different acoustic instruments (strings and percussion) that I'd like to record, as well as micing cabs, so I guess I want something versatile and not too closely tied to one kind of application. I also don't think I need anything more than a cardioid. 99ster -- thanks!
20. Thanks for the comments chaps Stingrayfan -- I'm interested, but I'll wait for more suggestions. Anyone else?
21. This any good? AKG Perception 200 Or do you have any recommendations around the same price, little lower, little higher, you know...
22. Hello lads, Finally the slow poisoning of my rich great-aunt worked. I've inherited her estate and to celebrate that fact I've decided I'm going to do some recording. I have a nice mic/bass pre that I'd like to use, so essentially I need something that takes the balanced signal from my pre and send it to my laptop using USB. I was thinking about the Lexicon Alpha. Now my question is: I presume this widget has an internal mic pre. I don't want to use it, because my pre is exactly 7,843 times better than that one. Is there any way to effectively bypass it? Could it be that I only need a A/D converter? Am I worrying too much that the Alpha pre will affect the sound? Am I talking bollox? Secondly, I need an intuitive, easy to use recording/mixing software (I mean it -- I'm not willing to invest too much time into learning how to use it). AND -- there's the rub -- it has to be compatible with Vista (don't ask). The Alpha comes bundled with Cubase LE (which as far as I can understand does work on Vista... sometimes...), but I have no idea whether that's a good thing or not. Any suggestions?
23. That's right -- I don't use effects anyway, so that doesn't bother me, plus it has a compressor and parametric eq. Starting to get some nasty sounds out of it. At least I hope it's out of it rather than out of me, must learn to say no to lamb dupiaza from now on! You're welcome to come by and give it a go, I mean the Avalon of course
