I unpackaged it, attached it to the bass and quickly realised that I can't use the second strap as my bass doesn't have a standard upper horn.. Doh! Custom Shop Washburn Stu Hamm SHB3, hand made in the USA. This remarkable instrument is actually the second SHB3 I've owned. Designed from scratch by Stu Hamm and the Washburn custom shop to be the "perfect bass". Ergonomics are particularly important to Stu, and that's one of the main reasons I tried to find another one of these. It's incredibly lightweight and so well balanced that you hardly know you're wearing it. You can tell that every element of the design has been carefully considered and laboured over. It features USA Hipshot tuners (with drop D extender), slim figured/flamed maple neck with a lovely tactile finish, radial neck joint (a particular favourite feature of mine), nicely figured rosewood board, meticulous fret-work with invisible fret ends, TUSQ nut, a slim contoured body, custom EMG X pickups, a Hipshot Bridge with piezo saddles and a custom EMG X 18v preamp. It weighs just 7.5lbs/ 3.4kg and comes with the Washburn flightcase with the original tools etc. By using a combination of the MM and J pickups you can cover most of the classic bass sounds, I particularly like to favour the neck pickup slightly for a fat traditional tone with added weight. Bare in mind that the electronics are from EMGs 'X' series, which are designed to have the benefits of active pickups with the more traditional response and dynamics of passive pickups. Standard EMGs these are not. Also If you turn the MM/J pickups down, engage the piezo bridge and boost the bass, you get a very passable upright bass sound. I've owned a lot of high-end basses, Wal Fodera, Celinder, Sadowsky etc. and in terms of build quality and execution this is right up there with the very best. I've had a measure up and it's 100mm between the pole pieces of each pickup, so 70's spacing. I'm quite surprised by that as I've had a few 70s reissue Fender Jazz basses and I never normally like the bridge pickup solo sound due to it being a bit thin and clanky. This on the other hand has a thick and meaty tone, more reminiscent of a 60s Jazz.. Strange.

Hmm, I'm not sure now you mention it. I added a pickguard to see if it became clear, I'm leaning towards 70's? Any thoughts?

I've had more than my fair share of jazz basses and these are right up there with my favourites. They have so much character in terms of feel and tone. They work especially well with flatwound strings, which this one is currently wearing. Tone perfection.

All the Moons I've had have been great, awesome machines.

It's very similar to Moons passive J basses. I'd say the Moon edges it slightly but they are generally more than twice this price. They are pretty much a 60's Jazz copy, so firmly in Fender town tone-wise.

Here's the second of my JB600R basses up for grabs. The serial number (which ends in 007👌🏻) indicates that it was made in Japan between 1986 - 1989. As previously stated these are easily as good as the basses Fender Japan were making at the time. This one has seen some action in its 30+ years, but plays like a dream and sounds great. It weighs 3.9kg/8.6lb. It doesn't have a case but I can package it securely if postage is required.

A lovely early 80's Yamaha JB600R Jazz up for grabs. These are exceptional jazz basses and every bit as good as early JV Squiers IMO. This one has a beautifully dark rosewood board and a rather fetching Larry Graham style white finish. It weighs just 8.5lbs, is perfectly balanced, sounds great and comes with a nice gig bag. The flats currently on it aren't included (it'll come with rounds) but I seriously recommend the buyer throws some flats on it. Perfect bass tone 😍 I'd keep this one but I seem to have accidentally acquired a matching black one..
