Ermmmm..... Why?
Doesn't matter if you love the gigging or it's just a grind to you - you're providing a skilled service to an establishment who are in business to make a profit, and you're helping them add to that profit. I love my day job of banking and accountancy, but I wouldn't go along to a random drinking establishment and help a landlord I didn't know with his tax return for free... ... cause if I did, and enough others did, the other accountants who needed to make a living by doing pub accounts would be squeezed out of the market and end up getting screwed.

Hi folks, For sale is my Zoom H2 Handy Recorder. Here's the blurb: http://www.zoom.co.jp/english/products/h2/ It's an excellent tool for recording practices or gigs. I'm just not getting the use out of it since my singer bought a camcorder and we're looking at a laptop multitracker setup. This is in absolutely mint condition, boxed with all the accessories and manuals, and has a 1GB memory card. Any takers for £90? Postage £5 or collect from Southampton. Nick

Hi folks, I've got a Boss GT6-B which I just don't need in my current rig. It's fully working and is in great condition except for a couple of missing pot tops - easily fixed by a trip to Maplins. The original PSU got lost recently and I replaced it with a shiny new official Boss one. Anyone fancy it for £100? It weighs a bit so postage probably about £10, or collect from Southampton. Here's the manufacturer's blurb: http://www.bosscorp.co.jp/products/en/GT-6B/index.html Nick And this is why BC rocks... make the thread at 8am, by 9pm I've got a wad of cash in my pocket and have met a cool bloke in the process

Cum On Feel The Noize works a treat, as does The Boys Are Back In Town

When I'm practising at home I do it stood up,with a mic stand in position, in front of a mirror. Play through our whole set dancing about and keeping as active as possible, and trying to look at the mirror instead of my bass as much on the time as I can while keeping smiling. Not practising specific moves for each song, but making sure I can play them while keeping physically bouncy and having spare breath for my vocal bits. It's a hell of a workout... but then when we come to gigs I'm the one who's dancing all night long and keeping the crowd going while my singer/guitards are wheezing at doing a bit of a head-bob

Hi everyone, I sold Dan my wireless this week. He paid very quickly and was very friendly and polite in communications. Good man! Enjoy the unit and best of luck Nick

What's the best bit of kit you've ever bought?

Vauxhall Vectra Estate Messing around with a smaller car was just a constant ballache. Got room for my (nice big heavy) rig, my share of the PA and lighting bits, and a spare seat for an adoring fan or two -
Blue Oyster Cult! Check out their live album "Some Enchanted Evening" Also - Bon Jovi (you might have to mess with the key if your singer has a limited or low range though - we've moved Livin' On A Prayer from the original E down to A to accommodate our singer's mellow baritone - still a huge crowd pleaser though)

Gigging Saturday but it's a private affair. Monday night is the Ice House pub in Shirley, Southampton - nice venue, nice crowd, open to all

We've got our first wedding bookings coming up this summer and they've all been booked off the strength of the set we take into pubs and social clubs - bit of a mix of everything as long as it's a toe-tapping dancefloor filler. Certainly not shying away from recent stuff. Many couples getting married now are what? Twenties, thirties? Doubtful many remember the sixties or even seventies. Throw in a few oldies to keep Auntie Ethel happy but give the majority of the crowd what they want...

Hi folks, Up for sale is my Sennheiser Freeport wireless. Here's the website with all the technical details: http://www.sennheiser.co.uk/uk/home_en.nsf...wireless_021004 Includes transmitter, two cables, receiver, PSU, manual, and box. Everything is in great condition except the box which is a bit tatty (been in and out of my gig bag). Purchased second-hand from a BCer about a year ago and it's never let me down. I play an active 5-string with an 18V circuit and it easily handles my hefty output without clipping or distorting £80 including P&P to mainland UK. If you're near Southampton you're welcome to come try it out. I'll leave this up here a week or so before putting it on Ebay. PM or call 07919 100666 with any questions. Nick

I seem to do alright with the ladies now that the gigs are flowing. Course it could be all the recent gym hours and my charming nature <ahem>

I'm in a similar boat. Just bought my new GK rack head, case, rackmount kit for my wireless receiver, now I need a rack tuner. Used to have a Korg one back in the day (DTR2000 if memory serves) but it seems they've stopped making them! Bar stewards. I really liked that tuner. Now I'm left with the choice of tracking one down on the 'bay or going for a cheapie Behringer model. Anyone got any experience of these? Folks turn their noses up at Behringer kit I've noticed, but their kit seems to have a good level of reliability on the road...

Just bought a 4u case from their budget range. The way the rims on the lids sit into the lips on the case isn't brilliant (I wouldn't expect it to keep any water out) but not bad for the money.

Even pay split between function band members
NickH replied to harvey1-8's topic in General Discussion
I'm in charge of all the bookings for our band. I don't trust those other monkeys to do a good job and wouldn't want all of us talking to different venues about dates in case of double bookings. I also do the accounting and tax as that's my dayjob so it's easy for me to do. The singer is in charge of the songs we learn and making setlists for each gig (he knows a lot more of what the Kids Today are listening to). He also handles the Facebook, Myspace, all that shenanigans. Guitarist and drummer both have wives and kids so it's understood that they have less time to put in than singer and me. They've also both got bigger houses and cars so they store and move more of the kit. We take even splits of all income and are responsible for our own petrol and gear maintenance. It's worked perfectly so far and we've never had an arguement about it. -

Hey folks, just got myself an absolute bargain of a GK amp from ebay, so it's time to sell my trusty Marshall MBA rig. There's a MB4210 2x10 combo I bought new, and a MBC115 15" extension cab I bought second-hand from a fellow BCer Included is a kettle lead, footswitch, and speakon lead. Don't think I've got the manual but it's not a rocket science amp and sure you can get it from Marshall's website http://www.marshallamps.com/product_range....=MBC%20Cabinets The 4210 combo is in really great condition, just a couple of scuffs but otherwise fantastic. The 1x15 is a little more road-scarred but nothing major. I'll email pics to anyone interested. This rig is LOUD and really punchy The combo by itself is plenty for pubs and smaller clubs. Having the full stack on stage DOES make you look like the boss though Anyone who can get to Southampton is welcome to come have a cuppa and try it out. It's not a small or light setup so postage might be considerable. Probably best to come get it in person. £250 for the lot please! I'll leave this up a week before putting on ebay - space in my house is now very limited. Would love a BCer to take it as it's a great setup that's served me really well. 07919 100666 or PM any questions Nick

Sorry to be another person just shouting about my favourite bass, but have you looked at a Status? Tons of options available, and Rob and Dawn are lovely people who'll welcome you to the workshop with a cuppa and let you try all kinds of graphite-necked loveliness

Back in the originals band, we counted ourselves lucky to cover petrol or get some beers. That's par for the course. The covers band is a whole different thing. We're here to work and get paid. Just so happens that it's a joy to do as well. I really enjoy my day job as well but wouldn't do it for free... We play friends' parties for free booze and exposure to drunken ladies Also, I rope the guys into playing free at the charity events I organise. It's sort of a payment in lieiu for me doing all the management, bookkeeping and tax stuff.

When we first put the band together, Monday nights with acoustics round the guitarist's house for the three of us who sing, to work out arrangements and see what we like. Then full band session on Wednesdays. A year later and we've got a ton of material really polished, so we're doing the acoustic practice one week then the full band practice the following week. Gigging keeps us sounding good. Winding it back has actually helped us a lot. It's less of a ballache and more something we all look forward to now. Everyone's more productive and keen.

Will also depend greatly on your band's lineup, desired sound, and wisdom of other instrumentalists. The settings you can use when it's just you and one guitar are greatly different to if you have two guitars and/or a keyboard, for example. And if your rhythm guitard insists on a heavy, bassy sound and plays in the low register, stepping all over your sonic space and making the band sound muddy as a result... either fire that fool or get him on acoustic
