1. My lot, 'The Mistreated' are playing at The Aviator, Ramsey Road St. Ives, Cambs, which is abot 200 yards up the road from the Slepe Hall Hotel, where the east Anglia Bass Bash was last sunday. it's regular pub fare Classic Rock with a few twists thrown in, ie. kick off with the Osmonds 'Crazy Horses' and somewhere in there is 'Ladies & Gentlemen' by a band called Saliva.......and if anyone can pop in, come and say hello! gicut58
2. Another big 'thank you ' to Charic for a great event. I thought only I'd be there for a couple of hours but hey, when you're having fun..... It was nice to meet everyone and get a good look at so much equipment - I'll definately be at the next one. G
3. I can get there mid- morning, if it's ok i can bring some of the gear as below. G
4. E string core snapped ('bang'!) coupla years ago in the middle of a song, caught my hand, and I had thrown a bit of the red stuff around before I really knew what was happening.... At the beginning of last year I bought a new MB4210 with the additional 15" ext speaker and they both went down 3 times each before I sent it all back. I wanted to give the manufacturer (you know who you are) the benefit of the doubt but that was just too much, and I ended up playing through the pa without backline a number of times. The positive thing to come out of it was that the local retailer was brilliant. G
5. Something to take you completely out of your comfort zone would be to have a go at the Registry of Guitar Tutors bass syllabus (RGT - here - http://www.rgt.org/. If you want, you can find an alternative (or additional) tutor or, given you have some grounding, take a look at, say, the grade 3 or 4 bass syllabus to kick off with. Not only would thid give you a taster of different genres, but if you wanted you could take an exam and get graded as well! You can take it at your own pace or dip in and out when you want. It's done me nothing but good and I'd recommend to anyone. You got to play with real people as well, no substitute, but have an aim - decide on material before you pick up instruments, sort out a date, practice together regularly and work towards a performance, even if only for family, friends, school, etc. It'll be worth it. G
6. I used to do about half the set in my last band but just bv's now. I still do the odd (very odd) song at local jam/open mics, but I don't mind, I'm usually happy trying to work a decent harmony to the main melody line. G
7. This is all so cool - constructive critique requested, and boy did I get it! thanks for all your help peeps, plenty to chew on! G
8. yep, 12 months ago, essentally the same 'sound' http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vhtn48ngH1c and here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bxIz9j5G1Yo G
9. I use a Genz Benz Shuttle 6 and GB 2x10 cab with a GB 12" cab underneath - this: http://www.genzbenz.com/?fa=detail&mid...=610&cid=95 and this: http://www.genzbenz.com/?fa=detail&mid...=617&cid=96 G
10. Can any of the regulars here tell me whether there have been any threads on tonality and hearing on the site in the past or does anyone have any specific technical knowledge? The sound I like is as follows - amp eq flat other that slight bass and lower mid tweak, turning off speaker tweeters, rolling most of the treble off the bass (active, 3-channel eq) so I have comparatively few higher frequency overtones and not a particularly fast attack to my playing. I want to keep well out of the guitarists range and add to the overall sound spectrum we produce. I love the band I'm in, we've had some fantastic times - so far - . The issue is that I am being asked, much more vociferously of late to add treble. Not just a little, but to the point where eq is flat all round and in my opinion the bass is punching out the higher frequencies and losing the majority of the bottom end and I am invading the guitarists lower register. I am told this increases the definition of the bass's sound within that of the band as a whole and both the drummer and guitarist are finding their reference points in what i'm playing much easier to find. The guitarist has tinnitis and both gtr and drummer wear earplugs. the questions I'm asking are as follows - am I wrong in wanting 'my sound'? I hate....with a passion......the sound the bass produces that other band members want. How much does wearing earplugs affect audio reception? am i being asked to compensate for the hearing issues of others? am I being a bit too much of a prima D? any constructive criticism gratefully received G
11. Bob the bassist: Happy to pay in advance if i can wangle a lift (I live in st neots and don't drive). This looks awesome, just what I'll need after Christmas in retail! Happy to give you a lift, PM me and we can arrange it Also, if anyone wants me to bring them, I can bring the Rocket, the Status and the Genz Benz rig gicut58
12. I can come to this one and i'd be happy to bring some kit along if wanted, it's on my proverbial doorstep (might need reminding as I have a memory like a sieve....... it's a long time between now and January........) gicut58
13. My lot has umpteen gigs before the end of the year in the Huntingdon/Cambridge area, here: http://www.themistreated.co.uk/gigs.jsp If you get the chance, come say hello gicut58
14. don't know if this will work, but here goes: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/7386867/Burn_St_Ives_Regatta.wmv poor sound, lots of wind(!) uneven floor (i think we were promised some sort of stage.....) posts holding the marquee up, warm beer and it rained earlier. Oh well, c'est la vie, sit and watch with a cup of tea... as it may take a few seconds to work G
15.
Jim Rodford of the Kinks stood in and played a couple of numbers with my band once. I think I will be sharing the stage with him at the end of August. He's in the headline band, we're third from top. - John Verity's band? He and Jeff Dakin helped me out with two or thre songs a couple of weeks ago at my local, the Anchor - and incredibly nice chaps they are too. Other than that I was in the crowd when Shakin' Stevens and The Sunsets played the Heavy Steam Machine in Hanley, Stoke, so many moons ago..... Fantastic gig
16. Room for a small one? I'm hoping to come & have a nose around, from Huntingdon area
17. yes, better than sitting in bedroom playing with yourself (apology) He's asking you to jam - by the nature of the beast, why can't he do some material that you want to do - give a bit, take a bit - only fair innit?
18. I would venture that maybe 300 years of reading the dots can't be wrong. Lessons will not only improve technique, it will break down 'musical walls' and open you up to all sorts of new avenues you never knew existed - there's just too much out there and really no time at all to learn to play it....
19. A liberal application of Gaffa tape or a couple of astutely placed nails should stop things like that happening
20. Loser - Thunder I know all the notes, but, as we all know, not necessarily in the right order......... (the old ones are still the best )
21. How about google the chord seqences for each song to get an idea of where they go,(print them off) and la-la (sing?) the basslines to the youtube video versions to get something going into your memory. That should get you on the way until you can actually pick your bass up and by then you should have an idea. Split Sweet Child into separate sections and go from there. Keep it simple and lock in to the drummer's bass drum. Use notes? Good luck!
22. not the case, but point taken if meant that way. Stupidly easy and a pleasure would be AC/DCs Rosie
23. Not quite so stupidly easy maybe is Purple's 'Burn' - Not only do I love it every time I play it but a hell of a lot of the pleasure is having musicians around me that can not only cope with it but are having just as much fun playing it as I am gicut58
24. Having had some questions as a result of different peeps taking a closer look at the photos, I thought it might be a good idea to clarify: The ding down by the dials looks bad because the guitar is black and I used a flash on that photo and it's picked up ridges - rather reveal too much than too little. The guitar is black and the wood has been marked - the original paint has been touched up. If this was a £1000 bass I'd be worried but but I'm not - it's up for sale at £100 - and as I said originally it's battered and bruised, and its the woodwork, not the electrics or the feel of it. This ain't a new geetar. I have been asked if I'll take it apart, pack and send - I can do that it if that's what is required, but I didn't offer to post it because I didn't want to upset the current setup (which in my opinion is good, but that's subjective to a certain extent) - tension, action and 'playability'. Hope this helps, gicut58
