A few of the posts here really reflect, again, guys not doing their homework before joining a band. I joined my band to play bass guitar and sing background vocals. It was made clear from the on set that was my role. I have no creative imput and I'm fine with that. My point, we established what my role would be prior to my accepting the offer. That was 5 years ago, and things are still cool. Blue
I knew the band well and as individuals. I was told before I joined that I could play the music my way. Homework done over the course of over ten years. On the other hand ... the band I'm in now (and for six years so far) I was asked to play bagpipes!(no joke) , I intended to play bass only and all the songs were written by the singer. As for the bagpipes I just turned up with a bass and they were soon forgotten. These days I play bass , sing 1/3 of lead vocals (on songs I've written) and occasional flute. I also serve as the front man.

Fired for wanting to have some creative input and not being an exact replica of the previous guy. I was in fact the most reliable member of the band , during my two year stint everyone else failed to turn up to at least one rehearsal without warning. The guitarist once failed to turn up because he'd forgotten what day it was. They went on to have four bass players in the next few months before disappearing into the "where are they now file".

They were back yesterday, they borrowed a bass again for the rehearsal but when they finished one of the boys came back with his parents and bought an Encore P bass.
You mean you'd put up with a band you didn't like for a bunk-up.
Since then I've attempted to learn Dutch for a bunk-up.
Fairy nuff. Definite grounds for leaving then, not just spurned affections!
But I'd still be in the band if things had turned out differently

The shop where I work has various teaching and practice rooms for hire. A woman brought in a group of boys to use the practice room because they were going to form a band. They were all about 10 years old. As I set up the drum kit for them it became apparent that most of them hadn't played an instrument before. I was asked if they could borrow a bass guitar and when I returned with the instrument I said "Ok who's in charge?" , one boy replied "that will be joe , he's gone to get some drum sticks". "No , I meant who's playing bass? If you play bass you're in charge!" The boy said "Wow , that's me!" and took the bass. As I left I heard him say "Right , let's have a rule -nobody plays anything unless I say so....."
I bet they were well pleased that you wasted their time.
We are all friends still. There were other reasons, time ,money , I wasn't allowed much creative input, they took on a drummer that I didn't think was right for the band , I didn't think it was going anywhere. I was with them for nearly a year, they are still going.

I joined a band because I fancied the singer, when it became obvious that she wasn't interested in me I quit.
We played a great little pub in Bruton but I am sure you have checked out very local venues.
Probably The Castle, I've played there many times but it's just free beer (always welcome but not what we are after with this band) A great place to test the water and we will be back in the autumn to test out a longer set.

I'm trying to get some work for my new band. We are a tongue in cheek country rock / southern rock trio (music for rednecks) , we formed the band as an attempt to earn some extra cash and having played a triumphant first gig we are now thinking "What now?" Having spent most of my time playing original material and not worrying about the commercial side of things I'm not sure where to plug this new band. Any suggestions? https://www.facebook.com/The-Dooks-981940681886219/?fref=ts

New band day - some personal firsts UPDATE
Good luck with the new band. I'm surprised you managed to get booked with only ten songs unless you were support to the headline act. We did our first gig with our new band in February and we ensured we had twenty four songs rehearsed before making any bookings, maybe venues in our part of the country expect more or is this the norm?
It was just a low key first outing at the local pub. I've played there many times with my other band, they know me well. -
Well worth the effort my friend. I enjoyed that clip. Is that a Laney RB3 then? If so, had you got any head room with it at that venue or did you have to max it? Not used mine "in anger" yet.
It's an RGB 400, I had the gain on 1.5 and the vol on 4.8. -
Embarrassed to admit that I know this song from when it was played in its entirety on 'Family Guy'. Good luck with the band, country is the new black or something.
That's how I know it! Our guitarist suggested that we play Wham's Club Tropicana in a hill billy style, sadly I don't have video evidence but it was the most talked about song in our set. -

So we just played our first gig....Bloody brilliant! It was intended to be a low key first outing but everyone turned out and reassuringly a few faces we didn't recognize were there too and enjoying it. Lots of good feedback. We only had ten songs so we did this one twice ... https://www.facebook.com/The-Dooks-981940681886219/ -
Which Strings? Constructive String advice please
Dom in Dorset replied to Grangur's topic in Repairs and Technical
About a year ago I started a thread about an idea I'd had to keep a log book where I recorded when I'd strung my basses and what with. I was almost universally derided! However since then I have kept this up and can tell you exactly when I strung each bass , type of string, any modifications made to set up etc, gigs played. Personally I like the new string sound and a high tension. I found Fenders too sloppy and felt the tone was a bit dull. I used D'Adarios for a long time but have mostly gone over to Rotosound as they seem to keep their zing a bit longer (and have a higher tension) -

A long shot.... I was going through some old spare parts when I found this pickup. I have no idea how/where/when I got it. Any idea what make it could be?

I'm 99.9% certain it's not snakewood it's very heavy and usually very expensive.

A double neck project for 2016, hopefully...
Dom in Dorset replied to oh...it's_a_squier's topic in Build Diaries
If I ever went twin neck again I'd go headless like this: A conventional twin is very bulky , it really pinned me down on stage. I also found that I couldn't quite get a playing position that was perfect for both necks.
