1. Just so we're clear, I'm not on a crusade (whatever it might look like) and I'm not trying to marginalise myself or anybody else. I've taught guitar and bass as a leftie for around 15 years and I'm comfortable with it - surprisingly, students (especially kids) often don't even notice until I point it out. I'm not going to go and sulk if I don't get my way - I'll deal with it in a mature way..................................................................maybe All I'm asking for is somewhere that we (and anybody else who cares to) can discuss some of the many issues we face as left handed musicians. Somebody care to tell me what's wrong with that? Come to think of it, the responses I've had since I posted the comment kind of make my point for me.
 2.
The reason that proportionate sales of left handed equipment does not equal the percentage of lefty society is because most lefties try to adapt to right handed gear. Supply & demand etc, it's not rocket science.
Yeah, I know
 3. I guess that now's the time to reveal myself as the other party to the original discussion with Josh. I've watched the conversation develop with keen interest, but have so far avoided trying to influence it beyond expressing support - I haven't been here as long as most of you, and don't want to be seen as an agitator. However I do believe passionately that being left handed is different, despite the subtle but enormous pressure to conform. Sorry to anyone right handed who's reading this (and I'm not trying to be mean or patronising), but you really do have to be left handed to properly understand it. 2 simple examples to underline how pervasive the pressure is:- firstly a thought about language: the Latin word for Left is Sinister; while the Latin word for Right is Dexter (so for example the literal interpretation of 'dexterity' is 'right handedness' while 'ambidextrous' translates as 'right handed both sides')...or perhaps you prefer French (Adroit - literally 'on the right' and Gauche - literally 'Left') second, the prevalence of right handed tools and artefacts all around us - musical instruments for instance - that's out of all proportion to the number of naturally left handed people amongst the general population. Try this - if you go onto eBay's guitars section you'll typically find around 40,000 entries, but when you search on the word 'left' you typically get around 400...approximately 1%, and yet research has shown that around 10% of the UK population is naturally left handed. Or try this; I wonder how many people even know that you can actually buy a left handed piano - Google it for yourself if you don't believe me. To make matters worse, right handed people have an annoying habit of taking the piss when you try to have a serious conversation about it, mostly because they don't really get it. I note the way the conversation is going, and I fully respect the decisions people are taking. But I'm kinda disappointed all the same. Here's hoping, Andy Kerr
 4. For the benefit of those who've been in touch about the Lefty Wal Custom, it's now with The Bass Gallery in Camden. If you fancy a go, pop over - might be best to give them a ring first just to make sure it's available for you to play. More details in the main 'Basses for sale' area. If you do get to play it, let me know what you think.
 5. Wal is now with Martin Peterson at the Bass Gallery in Camden. By the time you read this it should have been serviced and available to have a play with. Don't know if it's on the website yet, but should be soon. If you fancy a good time with a legend, pop over or give them a ring Asking price is o.i.r.o. £3000 ex Bass Gallery, which will include a full service and setup plus a hard case - not the original one sadly, but hey!. Yes I know it's on the high side, but it's a price that has been agreed with The Bass Gallery based on their extensive knowledge of selling rare high end basses; and in any case I am still open to offers/trades for high end stuff. PM me if you'd like to make an offer or suggest a trade - bear in mind that I can undercut that price quite a lot if I sell privately.
 6.
Hey guys, I decided to go for the RGT bass exam, and I should be doing it this month/next month. Basically one of the sections (other than playing scales, arpeggios, bass patterns, improv and ear tests) is a choice between Sight reading (I don't know who in their right mind would choose to do this ) or solo bass. According to the book I have to play a piece or a series of excerpts that showcase either fingerstyle, plectrum playing, fretless or slap bass. I assume it means you can only pick one. Has anyone done the exam or have any idea of what level of piece is required? I was thinking of doing something like a bit of Teen Town if I'm doing fingerstyle. Or something like Scoop or Power by Marcus Miller if I'm doing slap. Maybe a bit of "Heart of the Sunrise" if I do pickstyle? My exam could be very soon, and although I do know bits of all of those songs I don't know how quickly I could nail it. If the piece doesn't need to be that hard to get to get decent marks then I'd rather play something easier perfectly then try to show off and mess up.
Hi there. I'm an RGT registered tutor. You've probably seen the following statement already, but just in case you haven't, it reads as follows:- Solo Bass style (Grade 8) - "The candidate should give a confident and musical performance, showing advanced technical ability on the instrument. The performance should be imaginative and demonstrate versatility, accuracy, fluency and articulation." (I take it you've already read the general blurb about the Solo Bass style section so I won't repeat it here. If you haven't read it recently though, it might be a good idea to give it a quick read before continuing.) This section is marked according to several criteria, of which technique is only one (albeit an important one). If for example you choose to do a slap piece, you will need to show a pretty thorough grasp of the theory and practice of the style. That means being able to talk about it as well as being able to play it. Any single piece you choose should allow you the opportunity to demonstrate a good range of appropriate techniques. (A single technical aspect played lots of times, however difficult and however fast, is unlikely to impress the examiner much.) For this reason, some people opt to choose extracts from several pieces in different styles. When you're looking at the 'advanced technical ability' part, try not to forget that the examiner is also looking at the 'confident and musical performance' part. What that means in practice is that a big technique on it's own won't be enough to score well. Try to take a balanced approach, so that you come up with something that is technically difficult, but which also allows you to show off your qualities as a musician. Try to pick something that works well as a solo piece (or pieces) - remember, it's an unaccompanied performance. Oh, and don't get obsessed with speed - however fast you play, chances are the examiner has already seen somebody faster in the last week or two. Hope this helps, Good luck with the exam. 7.
Was just discussing this with another from the lefty crew and we were discussing seeing if we could get a lefthanded section of basschat going? I know that us lefties have been granted a sticky in the for sale thread (for which we are thankful of course) but we thought that that was just the tip of the lefty iceberg. If we were to get a subforum going (e.g. in "The Local" section) then not only would it make it easier for lefties to help each other (gear hunts, experiences with retailers, etc) but it might also help bring in musicians who are left handed who currently don't really have a forum on the internet (leftybassist.com is the closest it comes and its pretty poor from what I've seen). Thoughts and comments welcomed
Power to us all! By the way, when the revolution comes, can I be someone important please? I dunno - keeper of the Great Leader's Bass collection maybe Seriously, isn't it about time that the most important Bass forum in the country had it's own official Lefty section?
 8.
Update on 3rd June. For the interest of, er, interested parties:- After a number of interesting and enlightening conversations with various parties (many thanks to everyone who responded), I've decided to offer the Wal for sale through the Bass Gallery in Camden (who have kindly agreed to handle the sale for me). It will be serviced by Martin Petersen, and then made available through their store. If you are interested in having a closer look at it, it should be available to view/try from next week onwards - can't give you an exact day at this point 'cos it'll depend how long it takes to get the work done. Price? Again, can't give an exact figure until I've spoken to Martin: based on it's rarity and somewhat unusual wood selection, I would think that a ballpark figure of £2500 - £3000 wouldn't be far off. I'll give more details here as & when.
Just thought I'd make the point that although The Bass Gallery will be putting it up on their list, I'm still actively seeking offers/trades. Interested to hear from anyone with a high end Jazz or lookalike (e.g. Sadowsky).
 9. Bought PJB Suitcase + Cab recently. Found him to be friendly & straightforward, very easy to deal with. Thanks mate. Andy K.
 10. Update as of 3rd June. After some interesting and enlightening conversations I've decided to put the Wal up for sale through Martin Petersen at the Bass Gallery in Camden. Check out the thread in 'Basses for Sale'.

 12.
Thanks Andy ... pleased you found it!! Did you manage to source the PJB as yet? I'll make further enquiries and send links re. the Wal - you might also want to try the US Forums I mentioned. There is (or was) a Wal specific Forum (Steve Chesney? .. also a LH'er) which I'll post here (if I can find it) or send to you via PM (check New Messages on the TRHC of the BassChat page)
Got a pristine Suitcase + cab here that had been listed months. Steal at £700 and can't think why nobody bought it already. I may now have a single Briefcase for sale!! On the Wal, I spoke to Martin Petersen at The Bass Gallery, and he's agreed to list it as a commission sale - more soon. I'll be watching how your sale goes with great interest - what fabulous examples of the bass luthier's art!
 13.
Thought y'all might appreciate this
As if to confirm the old adage 'Just cos yer can, doesn't mean yer should'
 14. Hey David. Good to see you again. Nice bass(es)! Shame I'm Left Handed Joined the forum as you suggested, and put my Lefty '84 Wal Custom up for folks to have a look at - check out the 'Left Handed Wal...' link below (somewhere...). You may care to show it to your American friend. Got more pix if you want 'em. Good luck selling these two beauties. Andy K.
 15.
Hey guys. As some of you have already noticed, I'm thinking of putting my 1984 Wal Custom 4-string lefty up for sale. I have a thread running in the 'basses for sale' forum. Put lots of detail into that posting so if nobody minds I'd rather not repeat myself here. Apologies if this confuses anybody. No photos ready at the time of writing, but should appear over the next day or two. I'll put them into the other thread and most likely dup them here. I'm happy for this to take as long as it takes (within reason) - I'm not doing it to generate funds. Willing to explore options and happy to consider trades for something of broadly similar quality.
Update as of 30th May - a selection of pics of this magnificent beast is available in the appropriate thread in the 'basses for sale' forum. 16.
can't wait for some pics
Your wish is my command. Now available in the original post. Another point that might be worth mentioning: I had a fascinating conversation with Paul Herman about this instrument. He told me that he'd be happy to carry out the service. He also pointed out that the Ebony fretboard featured on this instrument is quite an unusual configuration for this model - fretted Customs normally had Rosewood boards. I can confirm that this is the original specification as per the back of the control coverplate.
 17.
PM sent re: Paul Herman
Got it thanks.
 18.
Might be best to contact Paul Herman directly as he has taken up the Wal mantle now.. I'll PM you his contact details..
TIA. I'm guessing that he's a very busy man right now though. Great news that the Wal name is going to carry on.

 20. Note to Silverfoxnik: You're right - it is a Custom! Made in March 1984. Sorry for the error and thanks for pointing it out...appreciated. Note to Coasterbass: Thanks for the good advice. Thought it might be better in the main topic area for now though, as I'm keen to discuss some points that might be of more general interest first. Is it heavy?...is it ever! Upside is the tone and sustain, which has to be heard to be believed. Just listen to this:............................................................................................... .................................................................................................... A bit more than the average Wal, I think you'll agree Note to all: Photos will appear in the next few days. It could use a service. Anybody know who does it now that Pete has retired? Slight digression but a nice story that tells you something about Pete the Fish: I had the good fortune to meet him a couple of times - on one occasion, he suggested we go for lunch.... which turned out to be the local fleabit pub just round the corner from his workshop. Wanna know what his typical weekday lunch was? The biggest, greasiest bacon butty I'd ever laid eyes on at that point; a pint of best bitter and a roll-up - all at the same time! No wonder he's retired on health grounds. Lovely, lovely man - definitely old school though. More soon.
 21. Thought I'd run this by y'all. I'm thinking of selling my Lefthanded Wal Custom, and am keen to get some feedback. I'm in no hurry as I don't need the money particularly (no more than normal anyway!), so am prepared to spend some time listening before I decide. It's a 1984 Custom with Wenge facings. It's in very good condition but has been well used by myself and others in it's time, and does have one or two minor marks - nothing serious though, and certainly nothing that's visible from audience range. Don't have the original case, but it has been stored, transported and looked after well. I've had it around 7 years. Photography will appear in due course. Why am I thinking of selling it? Well, to be honest, I don't play it these days. Haven't gigged it for ages, haven't gigged it regularly since I stopped playing in my mate's Jazz band a couple of years ago. So, possibly, time for it to move on. Plenty more info in the fullness of time, but that'll do for now. Feel free to ask. Price, well you know what it is and you know what it does. Don't have a definite price in mind, but even in depressed market conditions, good ones are still fetching over £2k. Please note, that's a tentative benchmark and not an o.n.o. price. Just so you know how I'm thinking. Rarity is certain to be a factor - I had it serviced by Pete the Fish when I bought it, and even he commented on how rare it was to see a left handed one. Trades, quite possibly for the right instrument - with cash adjustment as required. I'd be looking to replace it with something of broadly similar stature - talk to me! Not interested in gear though, as I love my PJB's and see no need to tinker. Update as of 30th May: Pics now available. Enjoy, but don't make a mess.:
 22. Did I hear you say £700 for both? If so I'll take it. New to this forum so unsure how to proceed, but have traded on eBay for years (as Guitarplayer392). I live in Northampton area so should be no prob to collect. Free all next week. Andy K.
 23. Hi there. Keen to buy this if it's still for sale, but remind me 'cos I'm thick and new to the forum- why are you selling an Overwater for £650. Andy, aka guitarplayer392 (eBay)
