Surely as we use amplification to make our instruments louder we should have a glimmer of understanding of how it all works. You have an excellent wiki here on basschat that explains it all very clearly so I dont understand what excuse people have for being "not technically minded".
Bloody hell, lighten up.
Sorry to hear about your spectrum sounds! Any update on this?
Hi AM1 - after a week of bleeping, the problem stopped. I've no idea how or why, but I'm glad it's gone!
-
Have you tried turning the treble down on your amp and bass? I have a Fender Jazz - with the treble up on the bass and using a plectrum, the D and G strings sounded like a wasp in a jam jar. So, I just turned the treble pickup knob down a bit, and it's fine. I recommend getting a good compressor pedal. I have an EBS MultiComp and it's great at evening out the sound across all the strings. All that plus a heavier string gauge for the D and G, as recommended above.

Stunning. Mind blowing. I give up.

Sounds like it's picking up some digital crap from somewhere. Tubes going microphonic? +1. My guitarist uses a Mashall TSL 100 watt 2x12 combo (phwoooor!) and it started to do the same thing, then it blew a fuse, then died. I had a look at the power tubes and one of the four was showing a blueish glow. Cheapo tubes, out, matched JJ's, in, sings much sweeter now. Looks like I need some new tubes then. Magic.

Does it have a fan in it? Yes, and bloody noisy they are too. But they've never made electronic bleeps before. is your mobile sitting on top of or near the head? No, I left it in the other room. And so the curse continues

Just as I'm starting to love my SVT 6 PRO, something weird has happened. It's making a background noise like a cassette loading Sinclair ZX Spectrum. It's not very loud, but noticeable. Anyone else had weird electronic beeps and blurps, and know the cause or solution?
Dude, I wish I had that kind of gear to feel foolish about. I know what you mean though. I've had killer legendary high-end gear and felt foolish about it when someone points out to me that they got some new-brand stuff for half the price that is reviewing better in the trade literature. So I go sell the legendary gear and get the new stuff, and yeah it's great and all, but then I find myself wishing I still had my legendary gear, because playing music is about so much more than just having the most efficient gear. And time and time again, you'll see the same thing. One guy with his refrigerator full of rackable crap and a six-speed bass with fourteen dials on it and thru-neck and inbuilt coffee-maker and what have you, all through some space-age cab with cones made from perihydroxidephenalaminedisulphate - and then some old dude comes along with a beat-up Precision and some ancient amp with four knobs on it, and owns the sh*t out of the new guy's sound. Enjoy your gear for what it is, and don't worry about what other people are doing.
You are completely right. I've focused too much on the techy stuff of late. My sound is well decent, so the Ampeg stuff stays. Cheers!
They sound like Ampegs...
Are you on commission? And paid in Krona?
So, I think everyone's agreed that you buy and hang onto stuff that sounds good to you, regardless of brand. There's also a big disagreement over whether Ampeg as a brand has its own distinctive sound - and as to whether the various products in the Ampeg catalogue share such a sound.
Agreed - well put. Thanks for your thoughts folks - you all confirm why I think this forum is bloody fantastic.
-
She? Hey AM, I had you down as a big hairy-bummed bloke bassplayer! Great stuff!
-
Yep - there's only one way to find out! Actually, that Classic 450 looks quite nice. Aw, sh*t.
-
Ouch - and so it goes on! No apology necessary AM - you make some good points.
-
Woah, chill folks! Didn't mean to set sparks flying! I think everyone's points are valid. To me, Ampeg has a very distinctive tone - now whether that's down to my brain moulding it to meet my expectations of the brand, I don't know. I just know that it's earthy, growly and trouser flapping. But I also concede that it might be tricky for sound engineers to control the frequencies flying all over. Then again, I have little to compare it to. The only examples of EBS or Eden that I've heard online are by funksters/jazzers slapping, popping and pastoriusing (if that's not a verb, it should be) the hell out of their basses. That's not my bag at all. I'm more into the Chris Squire/Geddy Lee thing - not so much the music, but their sound and style. Interesting thoughts people - I feel more comfortable with my choice now! Cheers Steve

Thanks for the replies folks. I dunno - I think I've become obsessed with hunting the Holy Grail of the perfect bass sound. So, I've been scouring forums where lots of people are dissing Ampeg and raving about EBS. Maybe you're right, it's a question of sound preference, style and taste. I'm more of a rock than funk/jazz man, so I think Ampeg might still be the one for me.

I have an SVT 6 Pro and an SVT 410HLF. And I'm beginning to feel a bit foolish about it. I did my research. But I suppose after 15 years absence from bass playing, I was fixated with all things Ampeg. So, I bought it. And, to my ears, it sounds alright. Now, fumbling through bass forums, I find the world has moved on. Ampeg seems to have slipped a good few rungs on the ladder of low-end. Now it's all Eden, EBS, and Aguilar. What do you think? Does Ampeg suck bass balls compared to the rest? Will anyone leap to its defence? Is there a lone soul out there who's put an Ampeg up against an EBS and thought it trounced the Swedish upstart? Or should I admit my brand-loyal naivety, axe the Ampeg, and buy stuff beginning with 'E'?
-
I would recommend it - I run mine with a SVT 410HLF cab, Sansamp Bass Driver and EBS multicomp, it's loud, punchy and really nice. Only two drawbacks: * the fans get very noisy after about 10 minutes (not a problem in a gig, but you'd have to move it into the control room if in a studio). * the eq takes a while to get your head around. I keep it quite flat - just up the main bass and treble controls a notch - and put about 2 o'clock on the low and mid frequencies - the rest stays at 12 o'clock. From there, I control any bass, mid and treble as required from my active bass.
Sold my DJ4 with no problems whatsoever, with really quick payment too. Really nice guy to deal with. Keith
Fantastic bloke to deal with - I bought an EBS Multicomp from him, great stuff. Steve

I bought a SansAmp Bass Driver off Ieuan - it's a cracking bit of gear - and he's a great bloke, a pleasure to deal with.
Two things you could try: one, experiment with placement - close to a wall (and in the corner of a room) will make a difference. two, get someone else to play through your rig and stand back and listen - quite often what sounds poor to you will turn out to be much different to those further away.
Thanks Paul, I'll give that a try. Steve

Thanks for your help folks. Like you say, the answers are probably elsewhere, but I find some of the explanations a bit tricky for my addled brain - this is really clear though, thanks. I know the cab's specification is pretty good but it just seems to lack bottom-end sometimes. Tis a shame I can't add another speaker - it looks like I'll either have to stick with what I've got or sell the speaker and buy a couple of 8ohms cabinets. Cheers! Steve

Hi there, can anyone help? I currently have an: * Ampeg SVT-6 Pro amp (with an output power rating of 1100 Watts RMS, 4 ohm load, 120VAC, 5% THD, and 750 Watts RMS, 8 ohm load, 120VAC, 5% THD - I copied and pasted this from the brochure) * Ampeg SVT-410 HLF speaker cabinet (4 ohms impedance). I'd like to add a bit more bottom-end welly to my sound. So, I thought about getting an Ampeg 1x15 speaker. However, the impedance on these in 8 ohms - which is different to my 4 ohms SVT-410 HLF. Could I use an 8 ohms Ampeg 1x15 with my 4 ohms SVT-410 HLF speaker? Or does my choice of second speaker also have to be 4 ohms? If so, I was thinking about getting another SVT-410 HLF to make the most of my amp. Or is there a better speaker cabinet for getting some trouser-flapping rumble? Thanks for your help folks - much appreciated. Steve
