Woah, chill folks! Didn't mean to set sparks flying! I think everyone's points are valid. To me, Ampeg has a very distinctive tone - now whether that's down to my brain moulding it to meet my expectations of the brand, I don't know. I just know that it's earthy, growly and trouser flapping. But I also concede that it might be tricky for sound engineers to control the frequencies flying all over. Then again, I have little to compare it to. The only examples of EBS or Eden that I've heard online are by funksters/jazzers slapping, popping and pastoriusing (if that's not a verb, it should be) the hell out of their basses. That's not my bag at all. I'm more into the Chris Squire/Geddy Lee thing - not so much the music, but their sound and style. Interesting thoughts people - I feel more comfortable with my choice now! Thanks for the replies folks. I dunno - I think I've become obsessed with hunting the Holy Grail of the perfect bass sound. So, I've been scouring forums where lots of people are dissing Ampeg and raving about EBS. Maybe you're right, it's a question of sound preference, style and taste. I'm more of a rock than funk/jazz man, so I think Ampeg might still be the one for me.

I have an SVT 6 Pro and an SVT 410HLF. And I'm beginning to feel a bit foolish about it. I did my research. But I suppose after 15 years absence from bass playing, I was fixated with all things Ampeg. So, I bought it. And, to my ears, it sounds alright. Now, fumbling through bass forums, I find the world has moved on. Ampeg seems to have slipped a good few rungs on the ladder of low-end. Now it's all Eden, EBS, and Aguilar. What do you think? Does Ampeg suck bass balls compared to the rest? Will anyone leap to its defence? Is there a lone soul out there who's put an Ampeg up against an EBS and thought it trounced the Swedish upstart? Or should I admit my brand-loyal naivety, axe the Ampeg, and buy stuff beginning with 'E'?

I would recommend it - I run mine with a SVT 410HLF cab, Sansamp Bass Driver and EBS multicomp, it's loud, punchy and really nice. Only two drawbacks: * the fans get very noisy after about 10 minutes (not a problem in a gig, but you'd have to move it into the control room if in a studio). * the eq takes a while to get your head around. I keep it quite flat - just up the main bass and treble controls a notch - and put about 2 o'clock on the low and mid frequencies - the rest stays at 12 o'clock. From there, I control any bass, mid and treble as required from my active bass.

Thanks for your help folks. Like you say, the answers are probably elsewhere, but I find some of the explanations a bit tricky for my addled brain - this is really clear though, thanks. I know the cab's specification is pretty good but it just seems to lack bottom-end sometimes. Tis a shame I can't add another speaker - it looks like I'll either have to stick with what I've got or sell the speaker and buy a couple of 8ohms cabinets. Cheers! Steve

Hi there, can anyone help? I currently have an: * Ampeg SVT-6 Pro amp (with an output power rating of 1100 Watts RMS, 4 ohm load, 120VAC, 5% THD, and 750 Watts RMS, 8 ohm load, 120VAC, 5% THD - I copied and pasted this from the brochure) * Ampeg SVT-410 HLF speaker cabinet (4 ohms impedance). I'd like to add a bit more bottom-end welly to my sound. So, I thought about getting an Ampeg 1x15 speaker. However, the impedance on these in 8 ohms - which is different to my 4 ohms SVT-410 HLF. Could I use an 8 ohms Ampeg 1x15 with my 4 ohms SVT-410 HLF speaker? Or does my choice of second speaker also have to be 4 ohms? If so, I was thinking about getting another SVT-410 HLF to make the most of my amp. Or is there a better speaker cabinet for getting some trouser-flapping rumble? Hi, I'm interested in buying a GD290 George Dennis Chorus/Flanger pedal. Does anyone know if it would be suitable for bass? Or should I look elsewhere? Cheers folks, Steve
