1. +1 for Ishibashi. My guitarist tried to buy a strat from craftedinjapan.co.uk but after waiting two months and cij not getting any stock, he asked for his deposit back and bought from Ishibashi last Thursday. The guitar's in the country now, and even after tax etc it's £60 cheaper than cij. I fully intend buying my next Fender from Ishibashi
 2. I've tried recording my band in the practise room using a single mic and a laptop running Audacity. I know this isn't ideal in the slightest, but is there any way to get it to sound, well, less sh1t? Any instrument being recorded on its own sounds pretty decent, but when everyone's playing together the mic seems to get "overloaded" - the bass and drums are right up front in the mix, and the guitars and vocals are fairly lost. I have a feeling the only answer will be to use separate mics and a mixer (and maybe a more "pro" setup lol), but has anyone made a single mic work when recording live? I've tried rearranging the guitar amps and PA to better capture them & messing with Audacity settings, and that's worked to an extent, but still not ideal. Would a shockmount for the mic help drop the bass and drums out a bit? Should I just stop being stingy and pay the rehearsal studio place to record us live? Also has anyone tried any cheap, all-in-one digital recorders, like the Zoom H4 in a live/rehearsal situ? Any help/advice/slagging-off gratefully received!
 3. If your budget's a grand, I won't bother pointing you towards the Ibanez EWB that I got recently, but they do a 5-string version of that for around £300, that I played and it seemed really nice However, in my (admittedly limited) experience, the low B is almost inaudible when played on acoustics, but I've never tried any massively pricey ones so maybe they're better
 4. For sale, one of the above, in good used condition. No manual but can be downloaded from Korgs website. Selling as it has lived in my practise room "toy-box" for the past year and a half, and I've used it precisely once. £35 posted?
 5.
haha that would have been me , as i am the only doug ( there can be only one ) , must have been a slow day . didnt sell you the ampeg damn must have been off my game well anyway , sorry for boreing you , although i feel ten minuets is somewhat of an embellishment
Lol, you might have sold it me if I'd had a grand to spend No i wasn't bored of your playing, I just kinda expected to have a shot of the bass myself, get a good play with the amp, which I then done up at guitarguitar. I personally like being left alone to play with something for twenty mins before deciding if I'm going to splash my cash on it. I appreciate that SC gets an awful lot of chancers and kids with no cash in to fiddle with ya merchandise, and it must be a pain in the 4rse deciding who's got money and who's just at it! BTW I was one of the people who constantly moaned about the lack of Warwicks, and I got a go on the red $$ 5-er, but some fecker bought it before me
 6.
I have no problem with Sound Control the company, good luck to them and yes it would be sad to see them go under. What I do have a problem with is the attitude I encountered last time I went in there (see my previous post, and also many others here), which basically means they won't be seeing any more of my hard-earned. Repeat that too many times, and hey presto an empty shop. That's what needs to be addressed. In fairness they aren't the only shop to have had such poor employees -- I won't be going back to the Bass Cellar for similar reasons.
I agree, I also have no problem spending a few extra quid in a "real shop" rather than online, provided I get the service I want. I wouldn't want to see any shop close down, especially as there's little competition in Edinburgh as it is! I've had mixed experience of SC in Edinburgh, although lately there seems to have been an improvement in service, however... I visited SC Edinburgh about a year and a half ago (guitarist in tow) with the intention of buying a £300 Ashdown EB Combo, the bass guy (Doug, IIRC, I suspect it was our very own Douggy, please accept my profuse apologies if it wasn't!) tried reasonably hard to sell me a grands worth of Ampeg instead, as SC apparently had 'em cheaper than anywhere else etc.... When I eventually convinced him that all I was after was the Ashdown, he asked me what I played, took a nice Fiesta Red US Jazz bass off the wall, plugged it into the Ashdown, and proceeded to play it himself for ten minutes without offering me a shot! After my guitarist and I got bored of playing spot the bassline, we left, and I spent my money elsewhere. Not a great experience, and the reason why a large bit of the two grand or so I've spent on gear in the last couple of years has been spent in guitarguitar, Simpsons (RIP) and Scayles/Live Music instead. On the other hand, I went into SC recently on a Saturday morning to buy a hundred quids worth of Perfect 10 minirig for a house session that afternoon, and the staff couldn't have been more helpful - offered to set one up and let me have a go before I bought it, which was nice, although I suspect they thought I was someone else, as they called me Dave
 7. Thanks for the replys guys, I managed to get it sorted. There wasn't enough (actually there wasn't any!) screwhead sticking out to do much with it, but I realised there was just enough space to fit a junior hacksaw blade between the base of the strap button and the body of the bass Five minutes of very gentle sawing and some sweating, and I'd cut the head and strap button off. Mole-gripped the couple of millimetres of shaft that remained and managed to extract it. Fitted the Schaller straplocks in the following 2 minutes. Anyone want a free set of Warwick straplocks? One screw missing, some hacksaw blade damage to one button
 8. Was trying to fit a set of straplocks, so removed the old strap pin, tried to screw the new one in, the cheesy screwhead stripped when the screw was halfway in. Tried to take it out, same thing, the head is completely rounded so a screwdriver can't grip it. Made sure to use correct screwdriver size/type, most annoying! Anyone have any experience of fixing this, or have any ideas for getting it off? Should I try drilling and tapping it out? Or take it to a shop and let them loose on it? Won't be trying to refit these Warwick ones, the design of them means the screwhead has to be very small. Got a set of Schallers sitting there, but no, had to try fitting the cool black Warwick ones
 9. Not a huge choice in Edinburgh, but I've bought from these three guitarguitar, 283-287 St Johns Road, Edinburgh, EH12 7XF 0131 334 7100 http://www.guitarguitar.co.uk/edinburgh_shop.asp Stock 7/10 Prices 6/10 Service 7/10 Scayles, 50 St. Patrick Square, Edinburgh, EH8 9EZ 0131 667 8241 http://www.scayles.co.uk/ Stock 4/10 Prices 7/10 Service 9/10 Sound Control, Grassmarket, Edinburgh, EH1 2HY 0131 557 3986 www.soundcontrol.co.uk(not shop specific) Stock 5/10 Prices 7/10 Service 4/10 ***edited to add addys/phone numbers***
 10.
I have one of these. Mahogany.....seriously..? The best way to describe this bass is that it's like your obese best friend. Wesley would have been a lot more practical, but Harley's the one you want at your back during a fight. He makes a lot of noise, has trouble fitting in, but you wouldn't trade him for the world. Unless you're called Ron and strapped for cash.
Lol! Should read "unless you're called Ron and have been threatened with a de-bollocking should the number of basses in the house remain in excess of three..." I have an annoying feeling I'm going to regret selling it, but she who must be obeyed, err, must be obeyed. I'll cast it up to her the next time she buys yet another bloody Radley handbag tho Aye mahogany, according to Mr Thomann...
Harley Benton HBB30BK acoustic bass guitar with cutaway, spruce top, neck, back & sides mahogany, rosewood fingerboard with 24 frets, scale 86cm, saddle width 40mm, pickup system with 4-Band EQ, colour: black
11. Now sold to RichardH - pleasure doing business with you!
 12.
PM on its way - need to check with SWMBO...
PM replied to...
 13. Just testing the water in case anyone fancies this before it goes on ebay. It's an HBB30 electro-acoustic in black with spruce top, mahogany back and sides, rosewood fingerboard, on-board pre-amp with 4-band EQ, under-saddle pickup, 34" scale, double octave neck. Can take pics if anyone's interested. I'm selling up as I got a good deal on an Ibanez EWB20 and my better half has imposed a strict 3 bass limit (except she forgets about the ones under the bed ). It's lived mainly in my living room, as my just-heard-a-bassline-on-telly-and-want-to-work-out-what-it-is bass, and has served me extremely well. Positives

Very low action: dead easy to play. I played pretty much every acoustic bass in shops in Glasgow and Edinburgh before I took a chance on Thomann, and this is the nicest I've played, and that includes my new Ibanez. Anyone local to Edinburgh who's interested is welcome to come and try it out.
Loud! Seriously, the body on this is huge, much bigger than most other acoustics like crafters and so on, and it really rings out.
Long 34" scale, double octave neck. So many acoustic basses have a short scale; this may be good if you've short arms, but most I know prefer longer. Oo-er.
Supplied with a practically unused Thomann gigbag - only place I could find a gigbag big enough for it. The gigbag has been used precisely once, to transport the beast to a mates house.
Will be posted in the same sturdy packaging that my Ibanez came in.
I'll even stick a fresh Duracell in the pre-amp
Negatives

Strings need replaced. I can do this, but I imagine most people will want to put their own choice on?
Damage. There is some slight scraping on the sides of the neck near the headstock, where it was hung on a hanger with no foam, and there are a couple of light marks/dings on the top. None of this in any way affects how it plays, and I can photograph to show.
Think that's about it. I paid £135 in total about a year and a half ago - £115 for the bass, and £20 for the gigbag. Have seen these go 2nd hand on ebay for £90-£100+silly postage, with no gigbag! I'd like £70 plus postage (at cost - guessing it'll be around a tenner). I'll happily deliver it free in the Edinburgh area, or anywhere further out in Scotland for petrol £. PM me for any further details. Cheers, Ron Here's the money-shot...
 14. Just got mine delivered this morning - spooky! I love having an acoustic bass in the livingroom, it's great for just grabbing to work out stuff that I'm listening to, or for five minutes of scales/noodling. The Ibanez is a nice bit of kit, slightly high of action up around the dusty end, which I intend remedying (see my thread in the Repairs section). It has a nice sound unplugged, but is fairly quiet. Loud enough for livingroom practice but won't come close to keeping up with an acoustic gu*tar without being amped. It's a replacement for my Harley Benton acoustic bass, which sounds much louder, but this is probably to do with body size - the HB is absolutely fapping HUGE! The two are hanging on a double stand in front of me, and the HB is scraping the floor, whereas the Ibanez is a good 6" from the carpet, but both basses have a 34" scale. When plugged in, the Ib is very, very impressive. Feedback is easy to control, and it has a fantastic big, wooden, rounded tone. I'm impressed. It also has a phase reverse control which seems to help eliminate feedback when it does occur, but I've not figured out why! The pre-amp has a built-in tuner, which I'm a fan of, and it runs on AA batteries, which may be a pain if you're used to carrying around stacks of PP3's! Build quality is very nice, finish is as good as I expect from Ibanez (which is pretty good!), and I personally think it looks very nice! Andertons have a black finished ash one which I suspect is an import - AFAIK Ibanez didn't release this one in the UK, or it may have been available for a short time only. I got mine from imuso, and despite the first one they sent being broken, they replaced it the next day without waiting for a return, so I'm quite happy with the service, and the price was the lowest I could find
 15. Thanks for this guys, good advice. I suspected the saddle may be able to be sanded, cheers for confirming Got my replacement bass this morning, all credit to imuso, who sent it out before they'd even got the broken one back to see what the problem was. The spares bag contains an extra saddle as I mentioned, and on closer inspection it has "graduation marks" moulded into the sides and centre, presumably to keep it level when sanding it down. It even came with what appears to be a selection of shims, I assume to allow the saddle to be raised again, which is a nice touch.
 16. Hi peeps, has anyone ever set up an acoustic bass, or had one set up? I ask as I took delivery of an Ibanez EWB20 today, and the ones I've tried in shops have all had a slightly higher action than my current Harley Benton acoustic. I notice Ibanez have supplied a spare saddle, is this so one can muck about with the action and still get back to factory settings if one muffs it? The action was especially high on my one, as the neck was broken at the heel However courier collected it this afternoon, should have a replacement soon. First ever problem with a long distance purchase! Here's a pic of an un-borked one for anyone who's innarested
 17. Simple Minds - Waterfront How hard must that have been to come up with..............
 18. Just bought one of these this morning, had a good bash on it today while the rest of my band were here [s]bonding [/s]drinking furiously... it sounds pretty good! *hic* More than enough grunt for the house - our drummer didn't bring a practice amp for his geet (don't ask) so I hooked my other soundc*ntrol bargain (Crate Powerblock 150W - £50 ) thru one of the minirig speakers and cranked the gain, and it sounded pretty damn good, while leaving me more than enough oomph running my MM Jazz thru the minirig head and one speaker Soundcontrol Edinburgh have at least two left, if anyone fancies one Anyone want to buy a Behringer BT108? No? Ebay time...
 19. 'Kin ell Have they been round Stu Cooks house, steelin' hiz bassez?
 20. Hi all, Ron here Enjoyed bassworld immensely, but didn't contribute too much due too xtreeeeeem n00bernezzz!!1! Re-took up bass in '05 after a long layoff. Playing in my own band, currently practice room only, but gigs are hopefully imminent I own: Fender MM Jazz bass, in natural (currently unmodded, but J-Retro is always tempting!) Hohner JJ Pro, in tobacco sunburst (currently backup - bought from bassworlds very own JPJ and still worth what I paid ) Harley Benton HBB30 (I think) Acoustic bass (nice bit of kit, but GASing for an Ibanez EWB20, so this will be sold soon) Ashdown EB180-15 Combo (will be having a MAG210 added VERY shortly, for that xtra oooomph ) Cheers R
