Excellent, thanks Cosmo!

I actually really love the ominous simplicity of the bass line in conjunction with that amazing Piano-like tone, it sound so mean! and then the widdlier bits from 2:00 on, lovely and twangy!

It's amazing isn't it? IIRC the isolated part is not the one on the original release - the CD reissue in the 90s used a different take. I haven't heard the original Vinyl version so can't confirm.
I do like that album, though it is an acquired taste to put it mildly! It's an Alembic masterclass throughout.

I love this track and especially the bass-line. Just curious if anyone knew what it was John Entwhistle recorded it with? I'm presuming around this era it may have been an Alembic?
Yes, very much an Alembic Series bass. Entwistle had a few so not sure which exact one - live he was playing the Explorer-shape ones but in the studio it may have been a different matter.
But yes, classic Alembic running in stereo.

Down on the E A D and up on the G.
Usually prefer to pull down on G strings but not on bass :secret: :laugh1: :laugh1:

That's how I've always done it.
Watching various youtube clips it does seem that the accepted method is to push up...

4. Do you push up toward your chin or pull toward your feet? I've always pulled down toward my feet when bending, except on the G of course. Never had any problems.
Now I'm starting to muck about on guitar I'm being told I bend the wrong way.
Have I been doing it wrong all these years?

hi folks,
I thought I'd share my experience with the EHX bass battalion with you. I haven't seen many reviews of it online at all and it seems to exist below the radar of many folks looking for their preamp-DI-drive-comp-box, so here goes...

First things first, as the title suggests, I love it. There a few reasons:
1) It is solid and sturdily made - as one would expect for one of these things. Easily in the same ball park as the rest, despite being quite a bit more affordable
2) It clean section simply sounds great. The main things to notice about it are that the 4 band EQ has a shelving bass that kicks in at 200Hz on the bass end. This is different to most (all?) others in this category both in that it is a shelf not a notch / peaking EQ and the frequency; 200hz is way higher than most other bass knobs! the closest I've seen is the VT bass @ about 120hz, while most are at or below 100hz. That's a significant difference.
The mids are low-mid @280hz and high-mid @750hz but they miss out the zone of honk (at about 500hz) meaning, in my experience, you can add some heft in the low mids and / or some bite in the high mids without the honk-factor. The treble end is smooth, glassy and ... erm ... nice!
3) the drive section is also really flexible, and can go from barely there bite / sizzle to full on distortion. It is way more flexible, and subtle, than the branding would lead you to believe. I sold a lovely vintage drive pedal because this does everything I want in one box in that regard. I was pleasantly surprised by this, didn't really expect to like the drive section much at all (I bought it mainly for the clean+comp)

now .. I didn't say it's perfect...

The compression end of things is fine for me, and does what I want from a comp, in fact it does subtle comp as good as my ears can hear, but that's about all. If you want something more technical / more demanding from your comp, then I would not expect to get it from a one-knob job like this, and that does seem to be the case here. Keep it subtle though (in an always-on kind of way) and the comp does a really nice job. For the compression anoraks ... the comp comes before the drive and EQ, so if your forensic analysis shows a roll off of anything you are only the twist of a knob away from addressing that ... but I can't hear anything missing from the tone.

The noise gate... bit of a novelty as the pedal itself is quiet and the gate seems to be ... basic... but I just do't use it.

Bells and whistles: It drives headphones really well so makes practicing with 'your tone' very do-able.

All in all, I think it is highly under rated. The paint job and the price might lead you to think its a bit of a toy, or that its a bit 'rock', but I have been very pleasantly surprised.

Hope someone finds this useful!

Doug.

Cool review! I'd love to try one.

Would you say the OD section compares to another EHX overdrive pedal? Or is it more Muff like?
I think I read somewhere that it uses the same circuit as the EHX Glove, which is excellent news if true - I used to own a Glove and it sounded wonderful. I only sold it as the lack of clean blend meant I could only use it at low gain settings before losing some low end. That shouldn't be a problem with the Battalion though!

6. I had a Squier one, but it needed a little bit of work doing to it. Firstly the stock strings were faily diabolical, and the replacement La Bella flats are very expensive. They work fine with rounds of course but I think they work far better as a bass with the flats.
Also, the nut seemed to have been made of nougat so that had to be replaced. Some enthusiasts have an issue with the bridge but I got on fine with mine.
Tonally, it certainly can do the 'bass' thing with ease - have a listen to Helter Skelter or I Can't Let Go by The Hollies - a very distictive twang.

My Maruszczyk Elwood 4p in Black burst. It's a 30" scale and weighs in at a delightfully pleasing 3.47Kg

Although it's not really a 4p anymore because I added an East J-Tone pre-amp. It sounded awesome before the change, now it's awesomer.

I hope this post works as I need to find a way to host then post my music photographs all over again. Fingers crossed...

That really is something!

9. Location/Venue: Red Lion, Northfleet

Your age: 20

Your bass: Status Shark

Your amp: Trace Elliot and matching 1x15

The set list (some of it): Originals except for covers of Faith No More, Sepultura and Britney Spears. And the A-Team theme tune.

Violent Intent, my first 'proper' band. I'd played live before but only at school concerts.
VI were a bit ropey, rather naive metal but had a great local following and would pack venues out... Bit of a lack of quality local metal at the time!
I loved that Shark (sold it like an idiot) but hated the amp - the Trace sound was never my cup of tea, and I didn;t really know how to get a decent tone out of it. I also had to go really light on the low end or the speaker would make a dreadfull popping sound. the result was a strange mid-heavy tone which didn't really suit drop C-tuned metal.
Sadly, just as we were really starting to get good, it all fell apart.

I'm guessing that is the guy on Talkbass that posts billions of photos of his weird DIY basses for the most tenuous of reasons?

I've tried conversing with him before. Didn't get very far.

11. I remember playing an old Rick 5 string in Denmark St years ago. A white one. Wonderful to look at but awful to play - cramped string spacing and a floppy B string.
That said, Ricks do seem to be very popular for drop-tuning in heavy bands. In my experience this only really works if you're after that roaring, thick overdrive - I tried drop-tuning and kept my usual clangy Rick sound. It didn't work at all.

I watched a few videos on You Tube with guys gurning their way through various Rush tracks and feel that stuff like the one below might be the holy grail of tone. That said, the none of the basses I've pushed through the unit give anywhere like the tone this guy has. I don't own a Jazz Bass either...anyone in my vicinity who does, it welcome to give it a whirl!

That does sound pretty fantastic. I want one.
Funny he should go to all that effort to capture the 'Camera Eye' tone with a Jazz when he's got a Rick there too :D
