1.
Black = Cold Both pickups are always on with that setup, is that what you want?
Thanks, yes that is what i am after. I have heard that series wiring will give me a fatter sound but what i would like to know is how will the resulting sound differ from the sound of the p pickup soloed? Will i have more highs than when i solo the p pickup due to the j pickup also being permanently on or will all the pickups being in series further reduce the highs due to the two coils of the p pickup plus the single coil of the j pickup all being in series ?
2. One more thing how do i tell which wires are hot and cold? The pickups at Seymour duncans and have black and white wires btw
3. Hi am after a series wiring diagram for a p/j bass and hoping someone can provide one, am not interested in series/parralel switching just series wiring, thanks
4. Rotosound seems to be one of the few companies that actually listens to what their customers want, it seems that if their is enough demand then they will make it. I emailed them a while ago asking if they had any plans for a 95-35 gauge set of flatwounds , they did not give a straight yes or no answer but said that they were currently looking into the suggestions made by their customers and had new string sets lined up for 2016 , hopefully they will get more demands for a extra light gauge flatwound set
5. Hi As per the thread title I am looking at adding some racing stripes to my p bass, I think racing stripes on a bass look awesome and was after finding out if anybody here has done this and if so can you recommend where to purchase these from , thanks
6. Looking for information but very little online about these, at half the price of most flats i am tempted
7. I have a squier bass with the standard fender style bridge,it's a great bass but would be good to get the action a bit lower than the bridge will currently allow, neck relief etc is all ok, a neck shim is a possibility as is filing the current saddles but was wondering does anybody know of some low profile bridge saddles that i could try?
8. Ok i now have an amplug 2, this is an improvement over the zoom however this is still somewhat mid heavy, interestingly the amplug is very very responsive to different strings,my mustang with ernie ball flats sounds good through it,played a p/j bass through it with ghs flats and it was very low mid heavy
9. Just thought I would add an update now I have had this bass for a couple weeks, in comparison to my other ss bass (Squier Jaguar ss) this has roughly about the same low end but noticeably rolled off treble, ironically this bass has more of the slightly farty midrange quality ala Jamerson that I associate with a good precision tone than my Jaguar bass with the p/j pickups has ,it out precisions my p/j bass, with flats on this bass absolutely nails the motown bass tone

11. Have sourced a zoom 708ii for cheap but having had it for a short while now i am finding that it is very midrange heavy, oh well the search continues
12. I use the foam that was in a seymour duncan pickup box (see below picture) and it works fine , I put in under the strings though not over them. I have also used a cut up washing up sponge to do the same thing and this also worked fine [sharedmedia=core:attachments:219779]
13. Got this bass last weekend, spotted it going for a very good price and saw my resolve to not buy any new basses crumble. Obviously i am aware this is a signature bass, am not into My chemical romance but a good bass is a good bass regardless of the signature on it so things like this really do not bother me. Appearance wise this is imo a very nice looking bass,im indifferent about the color but i like the general look of this bass enough that the color does not detract from this. Build quality is pretty good, not mia fender good but on par with the mim fenders i have played. Tone wise this bass is kind of like a slightly darker sounding precision,i have flats on it now but with the rounds that were on the bass when i got it the tone was a kind of dark rock tone, not as dark as a mudbucker bass but you can certainly cop a very convincing thunderbird kind of tone Overall very pleased with my new aquisition
14. Hi As per the above I am after a good, reliable tuner/tuner pedal for help adjusting intonation, I currently have a cheap Joyo tuner that is quite frankly rubbish and the built in tuner in my zoom fx pedal but I am sceptical of the accuracy of this , what is a good tuner or tuner pedal that is accurate enough to set my intonation with? Thanks
15. I have a set of these that is from another bass so being that money is so tight at the moment I will be giving this a try tonight, fingers crossed that the strings don't break
16. I know labella 760fl set and heavier are a solid no no when it comes to through body stringing but wanted to know if the 760fx set can be used through body, i have a bass with through body only and am looking for a low tension set of flats to use with it, thanks
17. Imo white is only an acceptable pickguard cover if the bass is all white , white pickguards on black basses just remind me of cheap starter basses
18. I vote... Black pearloid I know the picture is lousy but you get the idea
19. Have had gas for a Seymour Duncan SPB-1 Vintage for P bass pickup as I think the Quarter pound J and the SPB-1 together could have some interesting tonal possibilities, also would be good to use the P pickup soloed for old school motown like tones so have ordered an SPB-1. Anyway I digress way too much, I will do the isolation test when I receive and fit the new pickup.
20.
Apologies I misread the original post. Yes still applies - the P pick up is most likely a sensitive beast - do the isolation test
Ok thanks, so to do the isolation test I unscrew the pickups from the body of the bass and move them as far away from each other as possible?
21.
+1 So, the main questions that remain unasked. How does the bass sound? Do you like the tone? Does it have any humming or RF noise? Will you be playing it live using a screwdriver as a pick?
Thanks, yes the bass sounds good, the bridge pickup on its own still sounds like a bridge pickup should so i guess the bleeding through of the neck pickup is not affecting the tone so maybe i am worrying too much about this
22.
@markdavid - basically I think you're worrying too much - the SD 1/4lb P - pick up is most likely sensing the tapping on the other pick up & creating an output. The J bridge pick up will not have the same sensitivity so won't react to the P being tapped. If you want to test that, completely remove the pick ups from their mountings so there is no mechanical contact between them & try again. IMO - IME etc.etc. John
Sorry I should have been more specific about the pickups , the neck pickup is stock and the bridge pickup is the Seymour duncan quarter pound pickup , I chose a high output bridge pickup to balance out the volume difference between neck and bridge Do you think that the above would still apply?
23.
All grounds must be connected together. Doesn't mather how or where you do this. You an have each pickup grounding on it's volume pot but you need to connect both grounds using a wire solder to each pot casing at each end. With both volumes turned down can you still hear the tapping? Could it be that what you're hearing isn't really from the neck pickup but from the bridge pickup er... picking up (sorry) the tap on the the neck one? The magnet has a big pull and when you get a metal object close it pulls it with a considerable force and the resulting bang will resonate through the bass and can be picked up by the other pickup (sorry again).
Thanks, with both volumes turned down i cannot hear the tapping ,also i have tried tapping the bridge pickup with only the neck pickup voume on and it does not pickup the bridge pickup
