1.
HI there, I've had a Squire Mikey Way bass for a few months, but would really like to switch to Flatwound strings now. I've very keen to use the same gauge of strings as the stock set (NPS, .040-.095) as I don't want to have to adjust the bass at all, if not necessary. I can find the D'Addario Chromes in 45-95 quite cheaply, but the trouble is that they are long scale, which from what little I know could be a problem were I to cut them to the desired length for a string-through mustang (medium scale). If this does matter and I should really avoid these (or do I?) then another brand's medium scale 45-90s it'll have to be... So, does can anyone advise on this issue and if it needs to be medium scale or nothing, then what brand would you recommend who definitely cater for this gauge? I'm based in the UK so ideally something I can buy domestically. Thanks. http://intl.fender.com/en-GB/squier/basses/mustang/mikey-way-mustang-bass-rosewood-fingerboard-large-flake-silver-sparkle/
Hi , I have used both Labella 96-36 and Ernie ball flatwounds 95-40 on my short scale jaguar bass which i believe uses the same stock strings as your bass (they are both squier so seems likely) without needing to make any adjustments to the truss rod , I would think chromes gauge 95-40 would be similar tension also , ymmv
2. I actually found these strings very bright , definitely more roundwound like than flat
3. have had time to get my impressions on the wilkinson jazz pickup, overall i am happy with the pickup and is a definite improvement on the stock jazz pickup on the squier jaguar ss, has that slight midrange honk that is the signature of the jazz bass and is actually quite useable on its own for some songs (i soloed it for hotel california as i needed a cleaner tone and it worked well giving good articulation and clarity). NB. This being said I am using labella flatwounds so my experience may not be echoed by people using roundwounds
4. Have the stock p pickup back and a wilkinson j pickup, no more blurry midrange and the warmth is back Sometimes the stock pickup is just fine and this is an example of that
5.
I have a Fender mustang and musicmaster. The musicmaster is a late 70's American built, really really heavy and for most requires a pickup upgrade but can be found between £50-£550 easily. Good money for what it is.
My first bass was a musicmaster, weighed an absolute tonne, had no tonal variation the tone control did practically nothing, the intonation was spotty, the pickguard was made of the most brittle plastic which actually snapped at the jack end, the nut was made of cheap plastic. Sadly I dont own it anymore Strangely in spite of all these flaws it is the bass i let go of that I would buy again in a heartbeat (funds permitting) and would even leave it with the stock pickup , mine played great (relatively low action), they look great and although tonally limited they have there own unique growl that makes them stand out from other basses
6. I actually think it looks ok, that being said I wouldn't buy it as the pickup is in the bridge position and the whole point of buying an eb0 copy for me is the big mudbucker in the neck position
7. Really nice guy , was looking to get back into playing bass and he kindly donated his Harley benton p bass to me
8. Thanks, some good suggestions there , have just found some short scale sx jazz basses on rondo music, shame they are nto uk based but may be worth me looking into but for $120 i imagine the quality may be hit or miss
9. As per title, anybody know of any short scale jazz basses? , since getting my squier jaguar short scale i have been bitten by the short scale bug, would love a short scale jazz but not even sure if such a thing is available in the uk
10. Sorry couldn't figure out how to add pics from my phone is a single coil p bass as described is a little worn
11. Hi, i have decided to let this bass go, i need it for another couple weeks as my main bass is having some work done but after that i will be passing it on. The bass is a bit battered and neglected and had been used to learn diy skills, soldering skills etc and has been used by my kids and so you should be expecting to do a little work in it. I will pass it on to the 1st person to pm me,collection from the croydon area
12.
That pickup is best with rounds that's why!
I suspected that may be the case as the treble from rounds would no doubt offset the blurry midrange , unfortunately I am a flatwounds guy, haven't used rounds in a long, long time
13.
I'd seriously think about whether the problem might actually be the pickup. I was not impressed when I tried it. The SPB-1 on the other hand......
Hi , funny you should say that, I am having the SPB-2 taken out at the weekend and the stock pickup put back in, on paper it sounded like a great pickup, rolled off treble, increased low mids, all the reviews etc said that it was a really fat sounding pickup. Have had the pickup fitted and after a few days to evaluate it I have found it is just not a useable tone, it has less lows than the stock pickup, the treble is rolled off but everything is masked by this horrible obnoxious midrange, it is like the midrange is turned up to full all the time and its not a useful midrange either, trying to get a nice warm round tone is next to impossible unless you scoop all the mids on the amp and seriously boost the bass on the amp as well , in short I hate it , in fact the SPB-2 is the worst pickup I have ever heard
14. I have a wilkinson jazz bass pickup on its way for a pj bass, I will let you know my impressions once installed
15. Hi, have recently swapped the pickup in one of my basses for a seymour duncan spb2 hot for p bass pickup. The pickup is great however the labella flatwounds that used to sound great with it now sound less than ideal with the new pickup, something about the highs/high mids of the labellas is just not working with the new pickup so i was hoping someone with experience of this pickup could offer some suggestions on flatwounds that work well with pickup , thanks Edit: have found I have a set of Ernie ball Group 4 95-70-60-40 spare , I will try those, hopefully they will be similar tension to the labella 760fx , any string suggestions still welcomed
16. Am curious about ti's and just wondered if anybody here had tried the TI Jazz Flatwounds and the Labella 760fx and if so how do they compare in terms of tension , would like to try them and currently have Labella 760fx on my bass, Thanks
17.
Hi I have the full scale VM Jaguar but presume they are the same tuners. Later in the morning, I can check what size they are. To be absolutely sure, just take one off and measure it. The size they quote is the diameter of the cylinder that fits into the wood. Easiest way of measuring if you don't have callipers, is to measure the diameter of the hole in the headstock
Hi , if you could that would be a great help , i dont think i have calipers or a tape measure at home, thanks
18. @ Stu g , id you have to drill new holes for the wilkinsons ? where they like the type in this picture ?
19. I am sure D'Addario do a 140 gauge string that is sold on either stringbusters or stringsdirect, may be worth looking
20. Hi Have just acquired a Squier VM Jaguar SS and ive got to say i am impressed, the bass plays great, sounds great and looks awesome. I actually went into the shop to buy an EB3 copy but walked out with this instead, I plugged it in at the shop and the tone was rich, deep and warm even with the stock roundwounds, I was playing some Jack Bruce basslines and this suited them perfectly, the short scale of the bass really accentuates the warm, thumpy character of the precision pickup. The only weakpoint of this bass is the tuning keys which are adequate but could be better but all in all a great bass. Have swapped the bridge on mine to a gold wilkinson bridge purely for aesthetic reasons
21. Hi Have just brought a Squier Jaguar short scale bass that is an excellent bass, the bass is great but the tuning keys could be better, looking into replacements and there is 17mm,18mm,9mm, tuners that claim to be a direct replacement for mexican fenders, I am at a loss to what I should go for that will fit? Any ideas on this? Thanks
22.
Do you mean the shafts are at an angle to the scratchplate ? There are locating lugs on the pots, which should go into little holes near the centre. Probably not in the holes, or the holes are just not there. Sometimes you cant fit new pots with them still there. Either loosen the big nut and adjust, or break the lugs off with pliers.
Thanks, I have already taken the lugs off with pliers (the angle was worse originally) but the pots are still at a slight angle
23.
Are the pot shafts at an angle to the plate or body surface, so the knobs stay at the same angle all the time, or are the knobs at an angle on the shafts so they kinda wobble as you turn them?
Hi the pot shafts are at an angle to the plate
