Do you have any pics? I already have two, but my '83 (a fantastic player, sounds amazing) looks like it (barely!) survived a war and I would really like to have a prettier one as well

The Carvin arrived at my work address yesterday, well-packed, and in excellent condition. Just a loose strap button and some finish chips around the bottom strap button, but other than that it looks perfect. There is a slight twist in the neck as I suspected from the pictures, but it is so small it does not affect playability and doesn't cause any fretbuzz. I quickly replaced the flatwound strings with some Elixirs and I like it a lot! I've always wanted to try a bass with HS-setup. I was expecting a blend between a Jazz and a Stingray, but it's mostly a LOT of Stingray vibe with some added bottom end and warmth with both pickups engaged and the bridge pickup set to humbucking. The bass is passive and very plain, this is the most basic bass Carvin makes, but looks very well-made and the range of tones is huge. I like it!
Hi, Carvin B-4 for sale. I'm not sure what year this was made, personally got it about 4 years ago. Currently fitted with Rotosound flatwounds. Bass is passive, has one single coil pick-up and a humbucker which can be split(the little switch) so you can get quite a few different sounds. Can be tried and tested in Guildford for the moment. Looking for £230. You can contact me at or 07876522802.
I like it a lot! You've got mail :-) One thing though: is it just me or does that neck look very badly twisted?

I have the feeling lefties buy less brand new instruments. We're fully dependent on what's in stock in stores, and lefty stock is very limited. If we want anything out of the ordinary we have to order it, wait months, make a deposit, and if the instrument we ordered does not meet our expectations we're still stuck with it or we lose our deposit. I think not many lefties are willing to take that risk, and prefer to take the safer route: buy secondhand, one on one, so we're able to try before we buy. Or buy secondhand so we can always sell the instrument at zero loss when it's not what we expect. The lefty community on internet is fairly small, so we all 'know' eachother, the stuff each of us owns and sells, and we know who we can trust and who to stay away from I guess. How do you guys feel about this?

Yes, there are lots of instruments available lefthanded. The 17% estimate surprises me, I would expect more. But indeed, still disappointingly limited. And in most cases no special finish options or pickup / hardware variations. Fender is indeed the most disappointing example out there: only the American Standard P and J, and the MIM Standard J. And only with rosewood fingerboard and limited colour options (MIA: black with white 3-ply pickguard + sunburst with tortoise 3-ply pickguard. MIM: black + sunburst, both with white 3-ply pickguard). Fender Japan offers some tasty lefties, but those Japanese are keeping all good stuff for their domestic market . There are some online stores that will ship outside Japan, and there are some folks here in Europe that will import MIJ Fenders, but with added taxes those prices are eerily close to what a MIA Fender sells for here. @Tografox: I agree, I too wish EBMM would offer their twin-pickup models and the piezo option in lefty!
I would only buy a Stage I if it were the old old one.
This one is as old as they're gonna get. It's one of the first ever made, and quite possibly the first ever lefty. Still has the Spector headstock, pre-lawsuit. I agree though, 7k is rediculous. I would pick a Stage II over it as well.
let's start with.... This:
Very, very pretty! It would look even better with the proper cover over the neck pickup This one belongs on a Precision Bass. Are you planning on selling your SEI at some point? Do you still own the headless Shuker too?
Hi guys, my wife and I are expecting our first child in July so I'm thinking of selling my nicest bass to raise some cash. It's an '89 USA made G&L L2500 5 string, and an absolute beauty. Here's a link to the original owner's for sale post: linky I'm in for a grand, and that's what I'd like back. Any interest?
Oh my

I don't like the Dean Pace, it's more of an upright bass guitar and doesn't have a whole lot to do with a double bass. I used to own a Big Kydd, which is somewhere inbetween: it's a 35" scale upright, but unlike the Pace the fingerboard radius is much more like that of a true upright so it facilitates arco playing too. It's made of solid maple with a rosewood fingerboard, an it's headless with an ABM Mueller tailpiece and tuners. I liked mine a lot. Mine wasn't a true lefty, I had a luthier convert it for me (the stringlock at the 'head' had to be filed in so it would fit reverse stringing, and the fingerboard radius was slightly compensated for reverse stringing. I also had him place sidedots in the fingerboard. All in all I think I spent 800-900 euros on it (buying a Big Kydd secondhand on eBay, shipping from the US and the conversion, all in all).

What information did you need to know before going ahead with a custom build? I didn't order a custom bass yet, but I am considering having a bass built for me. If in an ideal world your were having a custom bass built, what information would you want to know before going ahead with the build? Lots of things. Based on the experience with various basses I've played over the years, I think I pretty much know what I like in a bass and what I don't, in terms of woods, neck joint, scale length, neck profile, body contours (both in terms of aesthetics and looks), pickups, pickup placement, electronics. But a luthier may well have different thoughts on this, based on my description of the tone and tonal options I'm looking for. And of course, when comparing basses, there's often more than one variable that's different so you can't really pinpoint what variable is the most decisive in creating the tonal differences between the two. So before pulling the trigger, I would have to talk to a luthier about the specs to share our thoughts, and to make sure we agree about this before I place my order. What information have you or do you find hard to find on custom bass's and builds? Mostly the tonal characteristics of different species of wood. There is a lot of information on this subject, but most written descriptions of tone are somewhat vague and describe the writer's view and taste, which I don't always share. How did you go about the process of choising the components for your bass? Based on experience with other basses. And part is a bit of a gamble, really. What advice would you need before going ahead with a build? (Wood choices, electronics etc) ? I'm open to any type of advice. I place a lot of trust in the skill and experience of a good luthier. Would you need information on different designs of bass (such as thru neck to bolt on neck) and the pro's and cons? Yes, would be greatly appreciated. Right now I favor bolt-on necks, but if something else would work better for the tone I'm looking for, any good advice is welcome. I like a traditional look and feel but I like both modern and classic tones and preferably in the same instrument, so there may be a bit of a challenge in combining all my wishes in a single instrument.
Just a quick post-new years bump for this. I'm willing to listen to trades for a 5-string of a lower value plus cash
Would you be interested in a trade for a Yamaha TRB5II? I don't have access to my photos right now, but I can link to an ad I placed elsewhere: http://link.marktplaats.nl/408035023 Some minor damage to the body (one paint chip, and a few tiny dents around the controls, visible in the pics). The neck is flawless.

That's more than they used to cost brand new over here You can still get its successor (in natural, with flamed maple veneer top) for approximately that price: http://klundertmuziek.nl/default.asp?pfs=p...9&pid=44239 The black one was cheaper.

That is by far the highest price I've ever seen a Musician sell for, even for a lefty! I bought both my lefty MC924's for 400 euros last year.

Beautiful Roadster. I added one to my collection last saturday: Sorry for the awful quality of the picture, I'm taking some proper ones soon.
