I've been out of the game for quite a few years(about 7 years) but some freinds i know we're looking for a new bassist, they gave me a go and i made it in. Thing is the music they play is rock(metalica etc type music). Thing is i've never played heavy before always been into indie bands, so been bit of a learning curve, but the time has come too change me strings. I play with a fender 4 string and a ashdown stack system, i used roto's standard gauge strings. What i;m asking is what do you metal heads use.i know it's too everyones own tastes but just looking for a bit of guideance.sorry for going on but my first time on here.
roto sound med gauge is probably the best thing played with a pick they will sound "nasy!" (in a good way, nasty) I think flats and the like woundn't give that "bite" you need for rock IMO anyway good luck W
Y'know it's interesting to note that some of us have completely opposite influences. I've heard of all of them - but many of them only in this forum it has to be said - but as far as I'm aware I've only actually heard Mark King play a bass. I understand Anthony Jackson has played on some popular records but I don't know which ones. The rest of them I'm fairly certain I've never heard at all.
I know what you mean! I googled/youtubed John Myung once and dared to sugest I didnt like him that much........god! you'd think I'd killed everyones (in the world) first born!! Now personallly I like Mark King (I dont think you do though!!) the other guys ( oh accepting Anthony Jackson are "widdly slappidy scaley" jazzers) who I need to take a nurofen before listening to..... no offence Doddy...really no offence!
I used to boil years ago. Now I'll just order some more sets or if there's no time, I'll put a set in the oven on full power for about 20 mins. This causes the strings to expand and all the dirt drops out of the grooves. Okay, so they're not quite like new, but much much brighter. TerryK gave me that idea a while back.
Never thought of that but I now know, ... I'll be trying it!!! note in the diary simply said "Bugger"!!
John Taylor (who is well under-rated)...Bernard Edwards...Jaco...Mark King.....Macca.....are the main one's. Just as an aside....John Taylor and Bernard Edwards became very good friends, such good friends in fact that Bernard gave John his famous (Natural) Stingray, which John plays in Duran Duran's video for the single "Serious".
I heard (here) that some guitar tech cut off the strings off that 'ray and that they were the same ones 'Nard had used on all of "those" tunes. if that true.. GOD!! eh? gonna you tube that durannie video now! you dont mean "notorious" do you btw? Edit: No you didnt, did you? suprisingly good tune I thought, sheeite...... does that make me a durannie?
Ok, I know these things differ from one band to another but a band is a team and I would defend the rest of my team and expect them to defend me in public - and then, in private, tell me to my face what they thought I was doing wrong. If one of my team started telling me what some punter thought (friend of theirs or not) I'd be saying, 'Hang on, never mind the punter, what do you think?'
Oh,I see where your coming from. In this case there was/still is a "team" ethos, and in fairness to the Drummer in question he was more "into" carrying round big gear and the resultant "tone" etc than I ever could have been (a real "gear" head if you know what I mean) at the end of the day Ive no real doubt this guy(drummer) did his best to "defend" me,as if I needed it. thats the type of guy he is. to be honest he is a friend truth to tell, it just didnt fit my standpoint to simply say: "punter slagged me of and mate/drummer didnt do enough to stop it" cos that aint the case, because he did. but I was saying why should he? ....telling me about it was just being honesty really! not some macheovellian scheme. Ill repeat, the slagging I got was quite intense it was imparted with honesty cos thats the type of guy this drummer is... quite a nice chap!! I know contradict myself in some ways..but..... I really shouldnt have started this should I? the "punter was just after my gig, I think, (which he'd never get! Ha Ha! )
Why shouldn't he defend you?
We wernt "mates" ET, just work colleagues, so as I say, why should he defend me? if you see what I mean? This guy was the "herbert" OTPJ talks about I suppose. I do try, where possible to keep things "out " of work as far too often bands turn into "fight club" and thats no good for anyone. or even, worse case senario "brokeback mountain!!!" eh? quim?
OMG...it was you!!!!! I didnt actually say your sound was sh*te, to be fair!
want a fight? by the way dont get me started on John Entwistle (whispers: God! he sounds like crap whereas I am completey GREAT!! everyone listen to ME!! cos.........etc etc etc...) and so on.....
21 years young indeed ^_^ Apologies, I think it was just the explanation of what you did rather than what you felt that made it seem a bit like a petulant child Granted he was in the wrong to be a bit of an arse
Thanks, and good luck mate sometimes musos.... just......just..... Gah...well you know!! you'll have "been there" (quwim/kwim ) W and to think I said I was "out" good fun, a bit of a "shout"every now and then!
For me, it was a flexibility thing.. same amp head but different cabs depending on the gig.
A BIG + 1 with that, good advice! as head/cab thing is allways best. allsorts of 1x15/2x10 (combinations-as opposed to combos) cabs turn up here and are not the "back break" type of thing too! good luck W
I only value opinions that are critical when they are constructive. Anybody can just be negative. Tone and gear is all subjective, some like some brands, others like different makes. Most musicians are pretty cool in my experience but there are a few who should maybe spend a bit more time concentrating on themselves as opposed to worrying about what others are doing. If somebody acts an idiot around me I tend to be polite but distant. Life is too short.
Thats pretty much what I meant but put in a more eloquent and precise way! Thanks B! after all its me that had the gig that night not the detractor,I suppose. Thing is, its not ok to simply "slag" someone off for no other reason than to get the opportunity to say how great you are yourself and that (really) is what happened to me. and yes I SHOULD have been a little more adult about it. Id guess many of us here will have experienced that feeling ,I just thought Id get a sympathetic ear here is all sorry if Ive come across as a petulant child! onwards and upwards Love W (teenager?...how dare you! you're only 21 yourself - yes- you know who you are!! )
YOU brought all this up, mate. We are telling you what we think of your actions at the time and how you still feel about it now. Put a disclaimer in your post if you only want comment from those who agree with you and your actions. Life's too short for bearing grudges, especially for people who diss your tone and gear a little bit. It's not like he tortured your pet gerbil to death is it. If I've taken this out of context, I apologise, but you had a proper rant about a tiny little thing that happened years ago. How do you expect people to react? "Har har, what a happy life you must have had since!"? All the best, Nigel
Yeah, fair enough Nigel,Ive "got on one" here havent I? and for that I should say sorry too! Ive got too much time on my hands, but its for one week only That bastar#d did kill my gerbil though, how did you know about that? all the best back at ya! John love the mini "kwim" thread in this !!
I'm sure plenty of us get CROSS, but about things that are important, not about pissy little things like the experience you have told us about. Just be gracious and keep your dignity. You should have talked to the guy instead of doing your Elton John routine.
silddix I thought this was/is just a chat forum for "down the pub type of conversation",please dont patronise/insult me by thinking this story is some thing thats REALLY imporant to me, of course its not. "pissy little things & Elton John routine" is just being rude. you have taken what I have posted completley out of context. it was meant to be a bit of a laugh at the way small things just "get" to us at times Had a sense of humor or empathy bypass operation recently? "be gratious"? practise what you preach. I'm sure you may well have really important worries and woes to concern you and find yourself repelled by my trivial scrawlings on the wall. I'm suprised you have the time to read any of this with all the IMPORTANT things you have to do and get cross about. ( I know...I know...."welcome to the internet".... ) Ill make like Duncan the Dragon " ahve herd enougff, so fer thaat reason ahm oot" alright allright I surrender...teenager indeed!! in my defense you had to be there I suppose critisim is one thing...vitriolic attack another maybe that wasnt clear enough I suppose. I wish Id kept me gob shut now!
