1.
I like some of Jaco's stuff, but find quite a lot of it to be pretty much unlistenable. Does this mean I should sell half my gear?
A very fair question. The answer must be to sell only the half of your gear that is pretty much unlistenable.
Fretless, surely?
A very fair point but nonetheless I expect most of the people who claim to be influenced by the revered one are playing with frets.
 2. I've used those green silk highly tense Fender flats. That's what the truss rod is for. Or for adjusting the other way if they are low tension strings.
 3. It will be aimless fret w***ing pot noodle next. How dare they?
 4.
Ok fair enough - I didn't think he did irony but clearly I'm mistaken
The Youtube link to a live version is on the first page of this thread.
 5. If the truss rod is adjusted appropriately then there should not be a problem.
 6.
heard the song containing words "some people want to fill the world with silly love songs"** (ironic, given that he is a major culprit) and was very impressed by the bassline ** i have no idea what its actually called
It's called Silly Love Songs and was written in response to others complaining he only wrote silly love songs. So, the irony was McCartney's own.
 7.
... it is worth checking out...
I think you'll find that many of us have indeed 'checked out' Pastorius.
 8.
... they're playing in cover or function bands. The typical muso bores who seem to have never written their own material but just mimic others.
You're on dodgy ground there because the great many so-called originals bands are playing highly unoriginal songs which badly mimic others. At least, that's my experience
 9. I feel luckier when the USA does not take precedence over the UK.
 10.
What has he played on? I've never heard of him apart from seeing his name mentioned on here occasionally.
Tower of Power at one time.
 11. Interview here .... http://badassbassplayers.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=73&Itemid=112
 12.
I thought this was to be a thread about Bobby 'Rubber Ball' Vee.....!
... and The Night Has a Thousand Eyes ...
 13.
It's a bass forum, so obviously the people on here will have a vastly overinflated idea of how important/popular/well known bass players are.
Not all of us have a vastly overinflated idea of how important/popular/well known bass players are.
 14.
I guess you can see how known they are by the answeres on pointless: http://www.bbc.co.uk...rammes/p019b7fk
Well spotted. Is that a real programme that people actually watch?
 15.
... Bushels undoubtedly a bass player who is a household name.
Who?
 16.
I'm sorry but I could pull a better song out of my a$$.
I think you'll find that's a different website.
 17.
I think this is being overthought, imagine showing a group of various people a flip book with pictures of various bass players, singing or not, mindless noodling, rocking out, whatever. Answers like "yes thats Paul McCartney from the Beatles, wings and the frog chorus" is a 100% hit, but I'll take a "ah thats the boys are back in town guy" or a "him with the tantric sex thing" as 50/50s etc, chris Squire for example, no chance really is there?
Sting might be a 50/50 but I'd say the back in town guy get's a 'who?' With any random group of 10, 20, or 100 people, there's not even a guarantee for McCartney.
 18.
For those not familar with the tune, here's 'Teen Town', live ... Quite good, as noodling goes, and it gets better as it progresses right up to a blistering climax. Hot stuff, from all of 'em ...
The studio version is substantially shorter.
 19.
Did anyone read my OP? I did say that knowing what a bass guitar was or indeed that is what they played was secondary, Kim Kardashian is a household name and she does nothing at all!
So playing bass was secondary but not irrelevant. I still say only two of your names have any chance of being recognised, and that's McCartney and Sting. Otherwise you are most probably looking for someone who is on X-Voice or The Factor.
 20.
please elaborate
Chris Squire is no kind of household name. Even most of the musicians I play with wouldn't know who he is.
 21.
Where's the like button?
We voted and we didn't like the like button. So no like button.
 22.
Chris Squire also?
Are you serious?
 23.
... How many more times can a comedy genius point out that "that's a big violin"?
I think you'll find that it is many many times.
 24.
You can have fun with Google Ngram viewer which shows when things came out of the wood work (in books). You can set the date range and corpus and enter multiple names (case sensitive, get the spelling right). I tried a few bassists I could think of. McCartney does not work - too famous and there must be another famous John Paul Jones.- may apply to other names if not unique (ish) Here is my bassists list: http://bit.ly/1QbeSYu EDIT - only seems to accept 12 inputs at a time.
... and if you use British English the results are quite different ... but still, being in some books doesn't make you a household name.
 25.
I think he was a pope.
Maybe you're confusing him with Francis Rossi the First - who is not a bassist.
