  2. Freddie Washington is the man. Another one of his tunes with Patrice Rushen, which was composed by Freddie too. I only heard this for the first time a few months ago, but I knew I had to get it transcribed as soon as I did! Patrice Rushen - 'Never Gonna Give You Up (Won't Let You Be)' [notation / tab] Original bass: "Ready" Freddie Washington Transcriptions archive
  3. (Obviously, use your judgment when considering what's appropriate for the gig - not everyone needs to hear a double thumb rendition of Valerie) PDF & backing track: https://www.patreon.com/huwfoster Anaconda Ultra P4 Essence: https://www.anacondabasses.co.uk/ 0:00 Demo 0:40 Intro 1:09 Why use more than one technique? 2:31 Pick 5:04 Fingerstyle 6:43 Slap 8:39 Double Thumb 11:12 Final thoughts
  4. Hi Paddy, just had a quick go at the basic chord outline. Doesn't contain all the details, but hopefully it should help. Getting Better.pdf
  5. One of my all-time favourite basslines by the incredible Nate Watts. 0:00 Intro 2:13 Verse 3:29 Pre-Chorus 6:37 Chorus 9:29 Bridge 12:43 All Sections 14:01 Outro
  6. This one was a request for a wedding I'm playing at today. A bit unusual as a wedding song, but I'm up for it! Proper dirty, funky blues. Awesome bass work by Cornelius Mims. Fantastic Negrito - 'Chocolate Samurai' [notation / tab] Original bass: Cornelius Mims Transcriptions archive
  7. Did this one a couple of months ago when I heard about the passing of Bernard Wright. Some phenomenal bass playing on this album, including from a young Marcus Miller. However, this cut is Barry "Sunjon" Johnson. Bernard Wright - 'Firebolt Hustle' [notation / tab] Original bass: Barry "Sunjohn" Johnson Transcriptions archive
  8. Here's a tutorial video demonstrating a few concepts: how I approach the minor pentatonic, and how to add a few choice tones to make it a little spicier! Chapters: 0:00 Teaser 0:20 Intro 1:22 E minor pentatonic, shifting concept 2:14 Adding the 2nd octave 4:14 E minor blues 6:13 E minor hexatonic 8:33 E Dorian hexatonic 10:07 Combine all 3, break the rules! As always, PDF and backing tracks available to Patreon subscribers.
  9. A request from a student. It's all fast crotchets until all of a sudden it isn't! Electric Light Orchestra - 'Mr Blue Sky' [notation / tab] Original bass: Kelly Grocutt Transcriptions archive
  10. Lizzo - 'About Damn Time' [notation / tab] Original bass: Ricky Reed Some tasty fills in this... in the video I added some tasteless ones of my own too!
  11. As Bunion mentioned, it’s a pedaltrain jr - one that’s been pushed to the limit! It’s pretty heavy and almost every bit of it is being used. The Noble is a bit awkward when it comes to taking up space, but it’s also just *so* good. I use it to power the Caiman, but I suppose it could always go off the board if you weren’t using it for power.
  12. I reckon you could! It's not the most complex sound - mostly sawtooth oscillators and a short filter sweep.
  13. Download the C4 Synth preset: https://neuro.sourceaudio.net/user/huwfoster
  14. My most recent build - I gave in and got a C4 Synth. Using the Caiman Tail Loop to change patches and switch presets on the C4 via a Disaster Area Micro Ghost (mounted underneath).
  15. Now with a playalong! (Not note-for-note though, I couldn't help myself...)
  16. Nikka Costa - 'So Have I For You' [notation / tab] Original bass: Pino Palladino Another Patreon request. I hadn't heard this tune before, but as soon as I did I knew I'd have fun transcribing it. It's a Pino Palladino masterclass in gradually building as a track goes on. I'm almost 100% sure it's in D standard (D-G-C-F), as Pino tended to favour that tuning at the time. Note: there's some weird stuff going on in the outro section, particularly bars 81-82. I gave it my best shot! 😂
  17. I’ve finally come back to my Basslines series! It’s been a while since the last one. This one is a bit different to what I’d usually make in that series, but it’s too much to fit into a Quick Lick video. I felt inspired a few days ago, and this is what happened! Feel free to take whatever you like from this video – you can learn the basslines note-for-note, or or you can be more holistic, and try to apply these 5 different approaches to your own creations. As always, you can get the backing track and transcription on Patreon. Chapters: 0:00 Demo 1:36 Intro 1:54 Concepts 4:27 Bassline 1 6:10 Bassline 2 8:01 Bassline 3 10:52 Bassline 4 14:40 Bassline 5 18:27 Outro
  18. Another Patreon request! Great bass playing on this one. Again, this one is for 5 string. Incognito - 'Good Love' [notation / tab] Original bass: Julian Crampton Transcriptions archive
  19. A Patreon request! Hadn't heard this smooth jazz tune before. Bass sounds like it's synthesised, maybe using a Fairlight or something similar? Transcribed for 5-string, but I did a 4-string version if anyone wants it - just let me know. Sherry Winston - 'Love Mission' [notation / tab] Original bass: Eddison “Elektrik” Sainsbury Transcriptions archive
  20. Quick Lick 7 - Ghost Notes + Syncopation = Groove 0:00 Demo 0:37 Intro 0:56 Slower 1:29 Dorian Mode 3:07 16th Note Syncopation 3:48 Ghost Notes 6:17 Outro As always, transcription & backing track available on Patreon
  21. Includes breakdowns of: Get The Funk Out Ma Face - The Brothers Johnson Get On The Floor - Michael Jackson Stomp! - The Brothers Johnson I Keep Forgettin' - Michael McDonald Reach Out - George Duke
  22. Thanks! I look a bit different these days, haha. 👴🏻 My P-bass (still the only I've had) is a Fender Classic 50s vibe*, bought from this very forum in 2010 I think. It's probably my most recorded bass, every engineer I've worked with has loved it. *Is that the model? I can't find it online anymore. It's Mexican-made, and was highly sought-after at the time - I think they were mostly made around 2007.
