  1. Santana feat. Dave Matthews - 'Love of My Life' [notation / tab] Original bass by Benny Rietveld I hadn't heard this one until I had a request to transcribe it. Some fun moments - I love the tumbao feel in the outro. All other transcriptions here
  2. Enjoy this breakdown of 5 Prince basslines - one for each decade of his recording career
  3. I occasionally do BVs. Along with all the other advice mentioned above, one tip that I find works for me is to simplify my right-hand technique at first. The reason why it's easier to play e.g. rhythm guitar and sing is because of the relatively simple right-hand technique - that repetitive, up/down motion. Try starting by playing with your thumb or a pick, and just play with downstrokes. Simplify the left-hand stuff at first too. Just outline the changes first, then gradually bring in the parts you'd normally play.
  4. I've started a new video series called Quick Licks (almost certainly not an original title, but does it really matter?). Here's the first one, all about Parallel Major 7ths. Full tutorial on all of the concepts in the video below - some parts in more detail than others, but hopefully a decent enough summary when needed! If you want to download the transcription and backing track, it's available on my Patreon, along with other rewards. Also, at the end I talk about my Hayman 40/40 bass - bought from this very forum!
  5. Jamiroquai - 'Runaway' [notation / tab] Orignal bass by Paul Turner Video with gear runthrough:
  6. New transcription Prince - 'Let's Work' [notation / tab] Bass by Prince, of course Another student request! Been meaning to dive into this one for a while. How dare one man be so funky!
  7. New transcription: Anderson .Paak - 'Tints' [notation / tab] Original synth bass by Pomo (I think) Video:
  8. Thanks for this one, and good timing - a student of mine just requested it!
  9. New video in my Basslines series. In this one I imagine what a cross between Jaco and Joe Dart would sound like. (Spoiler - it's just a 16th shuffle with some fast triplet stuff!) I break down the theory and technique behind the licks in the video. The transcription (tab & notation) and backing track are available to Patreon subscribers. Cheers!
  10. New transcription: The Jacksons - 'This Place Hotel' (a.k.a. 'Heartbreak Hotel') [notation / tab] Bass by Nate Watts I did a video for this one 10 years ago, when I still had hair (just). A student requested it a transcription, so I've revisited it. At the time of the video I thought that the original bassline was played in drop D, although it could conceivably be in Eb, which is how Nate Watts tends to tune his bass. It's hard to tell on the recording - there could be the occasional low D? Anyway, that's how I've transcribed it, but feel free to try in Eb!
  11. Ahh soundslice. I’ve seen a few other people use it. Thanks!
  12. Great work! What transcription software do you use? I'm guessing you were able to export the score as a video, which is a feature I've been wanting to use for a while!
  13. New transcription and video: Chaka Khan - 'We Can Work It Out' [notation / tab] Video:
  14. Hi! Thought I should post my transcriptions here, and update it whenever I do a new one. Transcriptions All created for personal use and tuition, with a few commissions too. Some of the older ones are a little less consistent in quality and appearance, so I'm going through those and updating them when I get the chance.
  15. Hi guys, I've just uploaded a new tutorial on 'disco pony' 16ths. It's a term I heard Paul Turner mention once, and it's kinda stuck. Essentially it's the classic alternating octaves bassline that you'd hear in many disco tunes, but on the high notes you double up speed, giving it a galloping effect. Let me know what you think! Huw
  16. I’ve recently started using GP and it seems pretty good. Very guitar/bass-centric, slightly frustrating as a longtime Sibelius user - the way it treats some accidentals is just plain wrong sometimes. However, it’s decent overall. I started using it in the past year as I have a few ukulele students who need tab, and it’s much better at handling that than Sibelius. I had a free trial for a bit at first - is that still available?
  17. ChrisDev's transcriptions have reminded me I did this one for a student a few months ago... if anyone can do that lick in bar 10 at full speed, let me know. I'd shake your hand if it wasn't on fire. Vulfpeck - Welcome to Vulf Records
  18. I realised there was a Basschat-sized hole in my life, haha. This sub-forum in particular is really useful as I'm teaching a lot more these days. Glad you like that one! Let me know how you get on.
  19. 'Happy' is in a similar vein to 'American Boy' imo. Apart from the 1 chord, everything else suggests minor. However, the melody is much more rooted in blues, so you could think of it as F blues (maybe mixolydian?) instead. That b6 chord is the outlier, obviously.
  20. Hi guys! A few years ago I started a series of tutorial videos called 'Basslines'. These are short demo videos accompanied by backing tracks, usually in a certain style (either a genre or a particular bass player). I've got into doing them again, and have recently put a new one up. This one is my (secular, non-church-going) interpretation of a 'shout'/praise break bassline. YouTube link You can find the other ones here. The early ones go into less detail, but I've got about 4 in the works in the moment, and I'm looking to put at least one a month out from this point onwards. Let me know what you think!
  21. This is great! I know Jamien, and the funny thing is that he doesn't know any theory whatsoever - but his ear is so great, and he's so creative. I'll let him know people have been transcribing his work!
  22. Been a while since I've been on this forum, so I how about I share some transcriptions I've done in the last year or so! All with accompanying videos: Aretha Franklin - 'Until You Come Back to Me' Chaka Khan - 'Move Me No Mountain' Jamiroquai - 'Mr Moon' Red Hot Chilli Peppers - Subway to Venus Let me know what you guys think.
  23. Recently bought a Hayman 4040 bass from Grant. Would recommend buying from him - great communication, answered my queries effectively. Sent the bass in sturdy packaging via next-day delivery.
