1.
The Arcade Fire Song Wake up opens on bass chords and later on the other bassist plays the "bass line"
Didn't know that. (Probably because the mix is so muddy. Endearing, but it's still muddy.) Thanks for the trivia!
2.
On that clip it's Pino and Dave LaBruyere. The Album version of that track(off Continuum) is Willie Weeks playing the bassline with Pino playing 10ths up the neck.
Yeah I remember reading an interview with Pino about that. What a session that must have been!
3.
300
I think it's more like 250. I've been able to change mine and I haven't had 300 posts yet.
4. Pino Palladino with John Mayer, doing some groovy shiz on top of the bassline: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B462-3AhYYk
5. When I saw James Brown in 2004 he had two bassists and two drummers.
6. Need to watch it again, just for the great musicianship. (But also for 'Kenny it's like a fist in my ear, L-O-V-E to all but it really hurts' and 'I'm gonna let it sizzle'.) The synth bass in particular sounds amazing - the fills in Jam almost caused me to wee.
7. On some function gigs I can sometimes play a whole set without looking at the fretboard. I end up staring at the floor just behind the singers instead.
8. UK Music Jobs perhaps? You have to pay subscription for all the features though.
9. I'm usually OK with letting people have a go on my basses, provided they ask, or I know them well enough. I've also had a few drunken punter encounters though - the worst one was at a party for a dentists association football team. Or something like that. They were horrendously drunk before we even started playing, but at the end of the break we came back to the room to find a few of them on stage, pratting about with our gear. I went straight up to the moron with my bass and removed it from him, but all I could think to say was 'not cool' - I believe a level of professionalism was still required of me, despite the circumstances. I wish I could have laid into him more, but for two hindrances - the aforementioned professionalism; and a sudden loss of all verbal coherence when angry (although judging by this I am presumably blind with rage in 90% of social situations). His response? A thousand yard stare, before stumbling silently off stage.
10.
I do like to do them, usually my voice (although being 6ft3 and big and hairy) is medium to high so harmonising is quite easy although the singer from HmF has a higher voice too!
I'm 5'8" and I can reach a low C. If you're interested in a trade, let me know.
11.
Did a job a couple of years ago where no vocals were required and went on stage for the first time without a mic stand in front of me, very odd.
I also find this a bit odd if I've been doing a long stint of function gigs. I have a bass/baritone range voice, so I'm not that versatile when it comes to backing vocals. My falsetto is OK though, so I can make do with that sometimes. Mostly I supply some simple harmonies or textural vocals that add a little bit more to the tune. Occasionally (very occasionally) on functions I 'sing' lead on Love Shack. I'm rarely required to do all of the male vocals in that tune though, as most of the time I share it with our tenor player (who's got a much stronger voice). Don't get me started on my attempts at rapping. (If only my younger self could see me now. Back then I believed I could retain some artistic integrity. )
12. I'm not normally a fan of maple boards, but that has to be one of the best I've ever seen.
13.

Whoa. Something weird's going on with the reflection in the scratchplate. I swear I can see Optimus Prime... Anyway, bizarre observations notwithstanding, it looks amazing! Good luck with the sale.
14.
You have to admit that he revolutionised the art of farming Turkeys though.
15. He's very quickly turning into one the strongest influences on my playing of late. Can't get enough!
16. I want one of those classic line Stingray 5s so much. Unless it turns out they sound/play like ass. Then again I might still want one, purely based on aesthetics.
17. Wow, this thread is OLLLLLD. Thanks for resurrecting it though. I hadn't seen that before - it's ace!!
18. Happened upon Rodney 'Skeet' Curtis's myspace a while ago. This track was in the player - I had to get hold of it immediately! I'd all but forgotten about it until iTunes shuffle reminded me how ace the groove and the bass playing is.
19. That's a beaut. I'm starting to really want one of these. Maybe not in natural finish... I keep hearing good things about these basses of late anyway!
20.
I think so I was told by a friend before that Boss pedals are made especially to power off of eachother. but I dont know for sure.
Boss TU-2s have another DC jack for supplying power to other pedals, as does the Korg pitchblack.
21. Yup that definitely sounds like synesthesia - a condition that involves the senses merging in varying ways. I think seeing sound as colours is one of the more common aspects of it (well, relatively speaking of course!). Very interesting subject IMO. I believe I'm right in saying Miles Davis had it?
22. Still in disbelief about this series of events. Firstly, the very concept that someone would orchestrate a scam based around that kind of subject matter. Secondly, that it was sussed out. That's some sterling detective work by the mod team. And yet, I'm still left sort of hoping the inconsistencies were down to human error or something, but there's no arguing with IP addresses I guess...
23. What initially inspired me to become a musician were two films I watched endlessly when I was young: The Blues Brothers, and the Chuck Berry bit in Back to the Future. I came round to the idea of playing bass because my brother already played guitar and wouldn't let me as well. Actually that's not the whole truth - I really wanted to learn 'Sunshine of Your Love' and 'Hey Joe'. I thought the bass had something cool going on in each of those. That was almost 10 years ago. These days I'm most inspired by... jamming I guess? I just love the feeling achieved from interaction with other musicians, whether it's in a rehearsal room or on a stage. Can't beat it.
