1. Thought I might as well make a thread for all my public gigs. Most of them will be in and around Leeds unless specified. Very last minute I know, but I thought I'd put it out there that I have not one, but two (!) gigs tonight (at two separate venues - I don't exactly make it easy for myself). The first one is my originals band Caterpillar at Royal Park Cellars. We're first on the bill, should be kicking off at around 8.30. I'll then be heading into town to The Wardrobe where JSOUL (nu-soul/R&B/disco/funk) will be performing. Tonight's line-up includes 4 vocals (2 male, 2 female), 2 keyboards, plus guitars, drums, bass etc. Starts 10.30. As far as I'm aware, both are free entry. I'll be surprised if anyone here is around for this, but it's worth a try anyway! (I'll give more notice for future gigs, haha.) Huw
2. Did a gig tonight at a venue which had plenty of beer crates for amp elevation. Disconcertingly sticky beer crates, but beer crates nonetheless.
3. This thread just reminded me of this: Genius.
4. I don't know the specifics, but invariably yes.
5. My new band Caterpillar after a recent gig: For the photo to make sense, please read this thread. OK, it's not a proper promo shot (we're going to get some done soon), but there's a photographer at that night most weeks, and he's been doing some cool 'cross-processed' photos (lomography to the film geeks). I really liked this one.
6. Time for a 'the gig is this Thursday' bump.
7. I'm playing in two bands (greedy I know) at The Elbow Room next week. It's the first proper outing for both of them, so we'd appreciate any support we can muster! The first on the bill is my new(ish) originals band, Caterpillar. This relatively modest quintet will then morph into a 10 piece monster called JSOUL - a covers band performing heavily arranged neo-soul/R&B/funk/disco tunes by the likes of Michael Jackson, Chic, Stevie Wonder, Mary J. Blige, Usher etc. It promises to be a night of heavy groove. If you're around in Leeds next Thursday and want to go to a free gig (gwan you know you want to) then don't hesitate to pop by. Here's the flyer: Thanks! Huw
8.
Went to see a band called Kong (myspace.com/kongdom). Had a very distinctive look of all red with wierd doll/plastic surgery latex masks. pretty cool noise band. Not sure how this contributes to the discussion but they had changed into civvies once they came to the bar for a drink.
That's dirty as hell. They all look like serial killers.
9. I don't think I've ever encountered a fretted bass without them, so I say... probably.
10. The body on my Schecter is ridiculously light, so I know this problem all too well.
11.
I've got mates who do bands with costumes, I tend to look at them and think they'd be better without the costumes. for example: BARBEROS - http://www.myspace.com/barberosmusic
Oh but that is ACE.
12.
I wish one of my band members would make a bit more effort before a gig rather than looking like he's borrowed his Dad's best "going out" shirt. Don't necessarily want to have a "style" or owt but just a bit of awareness and forward thinking would be welcomed!
Not on topic, but that fella from Eastenders (?) in your avatar has the exact same jumper as me.
13. In my latest band I've been coaxed into wearing a wifebeater. To be honest I quite like it, but I'd probably suit that look better if I wasn't so short, skinny, middle class and white.
14. My new project Caterpillar has a rough mix on its Myspace page: http://www.myspace.com/caterpillarmusicuk More to follow.
15. I'm in the pro-Moffett camp. I think he's perfect for Jacko. Oh and:
initially I was thinking 'Jennifer Batten has aged well'. doh
Thought exactly the same when the trailer came out. Got shot down when I mentioned it to my friends.
16.
The Arcade Fire Song Wake up opens on bass chords and later on the other bassist plays the "bass line"
Didn't know that. (Probably because the mix is so muddy. Endearing, but it's still muddy.) Thanks for the trivia!
17.
On that clip it's Pino and Dave LaBruyere. The Album version of that track(off Continuum) is Willie Weeks playing the bassline with Pino playing 10ths up the neck.
Yeah I remember reading an interview with Pino about that. What a session that must have been!
18.
300
I think it's more like 250. I've been able to change mine and I haven't had 300 posts yet.
19. Pino Palladino with John Mayer, doing some groovy shiz on top of the bassline: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B462-3AhYYk
20. When I saw James Brown in 2004 he had two bassists and two drummers.
21. Need to watch it again, just for the great musicianship. (But also for 'Kenny it's like a fist in my ear, L-O-V-E to all but it really hurts' and 'I'm gonna let it sizzle'.) The synth bass in particular sounds amazing - the fills in Jam almost caused me to wee.
22. On some function gigs I can sometimes play a whole set without looking at the fretboard. I end up staring at the floor just behind the singers instead.
23. UK Music Jobs perhaps? You have to pay subscription for all the features though.
24. I'm usually OK with letting people have a go on my basses, provided they ask, or I know them well enough. I've also had a few drunken punter encounters though - the worst one was at a party for a dentists association football team. Or something like that. They were horrendously drunk before we even started playing, but at the end of the break we came back to the room to find a few of them on stage, pratting about with our gear. I went straight up to the moron with my bass and removed it from him, but all I could think to say was 'not cool' - I believe a level of professionalism was still required of me, despite the circumstances. I wish I could have laid into him more, but for two hindrances - the aforementioned professionalism; and a sudden loss of all verbal coherence when angry (although judging by this I am presumably blind with rage in 90% of social situations). His response? A thousand yard stare, before stumbling silently off stage.
