  1. I'm far from certain that I'm doing the right thing here. I had a couple of years off from even looking at a bass, due to band driven stress from all the mucking about with no gigs in sight. Thankfully my bass mojo returned and I'm starting to play with a bunch of like minded old fellas. I'm only playing 4 string basses. I think that's where I'm comfortable and it fills my needs. My best bass by some degree has 5 strings hence my post here. This bass is as it was purchased except for a filter pre amp one Mk up again (it was released as my bass came to fruition). It comes with a Hiscox case too. It has a flat radius board, 18mm spacing and plays like a dream. Complex tones are available with the filter pre and 20 coils of pickup on hand. The bass even has a passive switch and a passive tone (batteries are required to power the pickups). 34" scale with a 7 piece neck that is ultra stable. I modelled the woods from my Warwick Thumb and it has that growl which is great. This bass has presence in spades... It's no lightweight. It was never intended to be but I'm skinny and I find it sits well on a strap and balances perfectly. If it doesn't sell I'm going to be working on my B string use... Original photos from Alan's site until I get some done in the next few days. It's not changed.. 2. It took only a few minutes to put the amp in the case this morning. A £2.36 length of foam insulation from B&Q, cut into lengths and halved means that the amp is firmly sat on a cushioned base of 6 'half segments' with the front screws only holding it in place and not taking the considerable weight. I'm happier anyway
  3. Thank you all. I will check out the feet on the bottom versus the desirability of rear support when I cast my own engineering eye over it. I don't even have the case yet. I was wanting to know if I need to get any other bits in to do the job properly hence my seeking advice. I'm not an engineering numpty. Engineering honours degree followed by a Post Grad Diploma in Nuclear Technology and proceeded by C&G Mechanic & Technician and a B-Tec Diploma..... Nowadays I just tinker with motorbikes Peter
  4. Yes, despite the earlier slightly patronising comment, a heavy amp supported on its faceplate alone, acting cantilever like, isn't ideal from an engineering perspective in terms of loads on components especially if as you say, it's given a shock load. I'll have a think when I get it fitted. It's possible that the feet will rest on the base I guess.
  5. Thank you What bulb is it? I'll get some spares.... Peter
  6. Now, I've done this before (not with this amp)and I perhaps should know the answers to my own question. Maybe senility is kicking in but can someone help me here? A have an EBS Fafner. It's a big lump and I need to put it in a rack case (4U to allow adequate ventilation evidently). I don't have the case yet but it'll hopefully be with me soonish. I anticipate that the front amp chrome 'ears' that the Fafner already has will mount on the front plates on either side using captive nuts and screws. That leaves the hefty rear of the amp unsupported (or am I missing something). I emailed EBS about a fitting kit and they tell me that the case fittings are all I need. There's also no obvious mounting points for 'ears' to the rear of the amp. I'm looking for some advice, do I need to get any extra bits and pieces before the case arrives? Thanks in anticipation. Peter
  7. Thank you Patrick for great communication and a smooth transaction. The amp was extremely well packaged. A pleasure. Peter
  8. Some interesting themes here. I came from an 'unmusical family' according to my parents. I struggled at school but music was a favourite lesson. I remember doing a musical aptitude test in year 9 and coming out near the top. Mr Harris had a trombone that needed a fiver deposit to secure but my folks said no. (My parents said no a lot). So the itch was always there. A life in the RN meant being very unsettled and occupied. When I left and became a copper in Plymouth I was on my beat looking in Manson's in College Avenue. Ralph sold me a Hohner Jack and the rest followed on. I thought that bass would be easier than guitar (our rhythm guitarist makes me realise that it's not the case). The point I take from this is that all we can ever do is now. Those most successful are those that apply themselves in the now. The now becomes the past with a purpose.
  9. I know it well. Been there many times over the years and my Mum spent her final years there. I've just discovered that an old mate (Eric Launder) lives there now. I was a Mersea Islander so not so far, as the crow flies.
  10. Just wondering where in NE Essex you are Chezz. We're a similar age and I hail from NE Essex.
  11. If you could go back in time musically and, knowing what you do now would bass be your choice of instrument? I was thinking that I am probably more naturally a drummer. It's not realistic now but looking back I'm probably better suited to being behind the kit.

  13. Many thanks. The amp hasn't actually arrived yet. When it's all checked out I'll contact EBS. As you say it's a big beast! Peter
  14. Thank you. Wise advice about rack mounting and I've considered this. I've read that a 4U case is best for cooling. Not having a rack kit is stopping me going in that direction. Do you know where I can buy one? Peter
  15. I'm looking for a tough, padded bag for carrying an EBS Fafner. 19" x 12" x 6". If anyone can point me in the direction of something reasonably priced and effective.... Peter
  16. Just seen this and the memories of moving from 4 to 5 string come flooding back. Following a break I now play 4 string again 🙄 A stunning bass and the first I commissioned from Alan.
  17. I've just bought a PJB 4B. Will update...
  18. Interestingly, looking at her posts pestering me on messenger, she isn't a person but an (ignored) group....
  19. An update, not that anyone seems very interested The cab with the EBS head was pretty damn amazing. Articulate and well defined with, for a supposed 200 watts an impressive amount of volume. I've played with the guitarists before but the drummer was new to me. He is a bit quieter than our last drummer so far as the bass drum is concerned and that helps. The only downside was that I had the volume knob up to the '4 0'clock' position to achieve this and I needed to add a fair bit of 'drive'. So I'm still on the hunt for a 2nd cab. As an aside I've had a very pretty lady with no apparent bass provenance want to befriend me on FB to sell me an Accugroove Tri-112L for £180. I think I'll ignore...
  20. My bass mojo having returned after a couple of years I've been sorting out some of my gear. I'm actually meeting up with some guys tonight to get back into some 'mutual practice' that may or may not lead to something further. I sold my Mark Bass LMII, my Tube 500 and EAD 212 (the EAD was a wrench). I've been using a TC Electronic BG250 (15' driver) for home practice for years but I'm under no illusions that it'll compete with a real drummer and 'enthusiastic' lead guitard etc. I've now got a EBS HD350 head courtesy of Lee (Lee650) and I bought a Accugroove Tri-112L. They sound absolutely lovely in my front room and I'm very impressed. The Accugroove is a bit special methinks and compares with the EAD in having a decent 6" mid range driver and a proper crossover. Ideally I'd like another Accugroove but they seem rarer than hen's teeth. I've placed a wanted ad in here. Tonight will tell but I'm thinking about needing a 2nd 8 ohm cab to pair with the Accugroove. I'm very interested to see how the EBS HD350 fares into 8 ohms tonight. So, failing finding another 2nd hand Accugroove, any thoughts on what would pair well with it? I'm not particularly worried about an aesthetic match and I already have the mid driver and a pair of tweeters so maybe I needn't worry so much about that? Any specs that I should compare beyond power rating and impedance? Any thoughts or experiences would be appreciated here. I'll predominantly be using a passive 4 string bass. I'll update how it goes tonight. Peter

  22. Still for sale and my requirements for a cab have changed to 400 watts or thereabouts and 8 ohms. Thinking a 112 or even a 110/115. In the unlikely event that is.....
