Thats the one mate! exact same. I absolute love it, in my 7/8 years of playing bass Ive never found a bass that has felt more comfortable to play, not one. Its definitely worth upgrading though, cause the sound doesnt please my ears quite as much as jazz basses have been doing recently. Ive played a few jazz basses, and though about buying one because I really do love the sound, but I miss the active preamp, and as I mentioned, my ibanez still feels better to play. I know a P/J configuration wont ever sound the same as a J/J config, but with the right choice of pickups and a decent preamp, surely it can be versatile enough to sound real close. thanks for the help. looks like the pickups are definitely passive then. That makes things easier, seems to be a lot more passive pickups about than active. will changing passive pickups and keeping the same preamp make much of a difference?

Hi, Ive got a 2003 model Ibanez SR700 which means it differs from other models by have a P/J pickup config. It has an active 3 band preamp. I dont know if it has active or passive pickups in it, Im not sure how to tell. I want to upgrade the pickups, and eventually the preamp. Will any combination work, as long as it physically fits in the bass?? Can I keep the active preamp and put active or passive pickups in? And can the preamp be replaced by any 3 band active preamp or is there more to it than that? Obviously the next question will be, which pickups and preamps are considered to be the definite go-to improvements on stock parts?

both my amp and preamp EQ only have controls for bass, mid and treble =(. Im going to try lowering the pickup below the E, and use it in a different room over the next week or so and if its the same ill look at buying a dedicated EQ pedal. Thanks for the reply guys

thats the correct word to describe it with, a boomy sound on the E string particularly. Ill take what you said into consideration, wait until i play with the amp at a gig rather than in our practice room and see if i still have the same problem, before looking that the setup/pickup height/string gauge. I use a heavy string gauge if that means anything. Would i benefit from using a heavy gauge ADG strings with a medium or light gauge E string?

I have a problem with my setup (to my ears anyway). I play a four string active bass through an ampeg head with a 1x15" ashdown cab. My problem is that, if i boost the low frequency on my amp or active preamp, i hear that boost of low end most predominantly on the E string and hardly at all on the rest of the strings. Now, I understand that the thickest string on your bass has more natural low frequency than the rest, and that using a 15" speaker wont help the situation but is there any sort of fix, be it pickup upgrade, new pedal, different speaker etc.. that will make every string on my bass sound equal in volume, as bassy etc. Should I be using a limiter to achieve this?
