  1. I recently read someone trying to claim that nothing pre-Metallica was metal, which if true would create the question: why tf did they call themselves Metallica? 🙄 It reminds me of Entryism. Metal exists; new bands join the genre and move it on; their supporters define the genre in terms of their band, and eject the bands which created and established the genre in the first place. I'm not sure what are the psychological motivations for this behaviour (unimportant people trying to give themselves consequence?) but I doubt they're anything especially healthy.
  2. I've been looking at the bass options to work out where to start. The Ampeg SVT seems the obvious choice of amp as a starting point. Searching around, it seems that the Ampeg 8×12 cab would be the correct pair for it? For a more vintage sound, I guess I want the Vox AC-100. Reading up I saw that in the 60s this would be typically paired with a 2×15 cab....but the Ampero doesn't have any 2×15 choices. What would be the obvious choice to go with the AC-100 from that list? One of the modern 1x15? Or an older 2x12?
  3. I've now watched enough demos of the user interface in action to know that I will like it, thank you I'm sure that I won't find a single sound in it that isn't already loitering within my Line6, but something inside me absolutely refuses to engage with the Line6's controls. Also the Line6 is massive: at 52×28 cm, it takes up 3.5 times the space the 28×15 cm Ampero will.
  4. I noticed that I could either spend a few more days umming and ahhing before buying it, or I could just buy it straight away. I'll have it start of next week 😊
  5. Was that recently? The website was happy with the dimensions I gave.... 😕 Oh well, forewarned, thank you.
  6. I've just had Parcelforce declare my USA G&L to be lost property and sell it at auction, legalised theft.
  7. The instrument I'm sending is worth a third of that; the packaging is vgd; the couriers are carefully chosen. If I still get unlucky, I get unlucky: misfortune lurks around every corner. If I had iffy packaging and a terrible courier, I would be worrying until it arrived. If it were damaged or lost I would be worrying until I got the payout. With what I'm about to do, I feel I've minimised the possibility of misfortune, and I'm not feeling at the mercy of feckless couriers or dishonourable insurance companies: that for me is peace of mind. When I once sold something I couldn't afford to lose, I paid the buyer to come and collect it.
  8. Weirdly, I find having no insurance gives peace of mind: actually getting a pay out is never a breeze, so it's nice that all that palaver isn't a possibility 🙃
  9. Another reason for finding DPD appealing is that in my experience the parcels are treated respectfully the whole way. I've had things from shops delivered by them with nothing added to the manufacturer's packaging, just a label taped on; they've reached me with no more visible wear than if it had just been picked off the shelf and taken to the counter. So I was going to use them anyway, but when I saw that they're also cheaper than Parcelforce, I thought the good news worth sharing
  10. Parcel is 135cm × 45cm × 25cm, and weighs under 7.5kg Delivery by end of next day. All prices inc. VAT UPS: about £40 DHL: package too long Parcelfarce: £21.12 / no estimated delivery time given to recipient PDP Local: £15.59 / one hour delivery slot given to recipient Hermes: bass delivered parted out
  11. The necks of both this Squier Dirnt and the Fender Dirnt have specs which are a bit uncommon. The nut width is 1.6", just beneath the usual 1.625"-1.75" range for a P, with a profile they call Thick C. To compare, the current Squier CV specs are 1.69" nut with a Slim C profile. Presumably that combination feels nicely rounded, but still totally manageable. Many thanks to @Jonesy for telling me this all of half a week ago
  12. Yes, *you* made sense explaining it. I can imagine that if I were to get one, I would immediately make the first dozen user presets blank. Or as blank as they're allowed to be, and identical
  13. Not fixed, but misunderstood - I meant a more fair comparison with the TRBX604FM would be the BB734, they have the same preamp with 3 band active EQ + passive tone, and not dissimilar prices.
  14. The BB424's victory over my TRBX604 is complete: Bass Direct have agreed to take the TRBX on as a consignment sale and it's on its way to them. Despite the fact that I never got a sound I loved out of it, despite the fact that my thumb gets tired gripping the back of its very thin neck, I'm still feeling very bad about waving goodbye to it, and that's because its such good quality, especially for the money, it's completely without faults. Good weight, good balance, keeps in tune, looks beautiful, active electronics work immaculately. In every respect the 424 feels a more basic object - presumably the fair like for like comparison would be the BB734. Damn you, picky hands, damn you, picky ears. Grrr.
  15. I've nothing helpful to say, in fact quite the opposite: I'm imagining what it would look like with a pearloid or tort pg
  16. I'm listening to So Far, So Good... So What! for the third time today, which suggests that my 2021 obsession with early Megadeth is going nowhere any time soon
