IMHO playing piano (which I had to do for ten years) does not make you better at other instruments, if anything it made the transition to strings harder for me (why can you play the same note/chord in several different places, coordinating two hands to play one note etc etc). It is great for theory though (which if he's got grade three in jazz piano he's got enough technique to explore the rest of theory).
I disagree there, i played for 3 years before i picked up bass. Certainly taught me a lot about music and theory, and the extra hand dexterity helped. It doesn't help with the basics of bass playing like fretting noted and your picking action but of course there's more to being a musician than that.
2. I second the Warwick Rockbags - sturdy stuff.
3. I took my bass, effects and a 1x12 combo with me to halls. Didn't play very loudly though, the amp was overkill. Depends how much space you have in your room really. If you're going to buy an amp specifically for uni I would get something like a 20 or 30W practice amp. Security is not much of an issue as long as you're careful with locking your door/window/flat.
4. I used to fit a 1x15 and a 4x10 on the backseat of my corsa with room to spare.

South East Bash

I should be able to make it to this as long as nothing comes up.
6. I have the medium one, I bought it to improve my pinky as I didn't have much stamina, but my pinky can hardly push it down. Guess I need a lighter one first.

Yeah same for me, really wanted to come but something came up and had to miss a bash again

South East Bash

Both are fine to me...I hope something doesn't come up and get in the way like the last 2 times, it would be great to actually come to a bash!
Hi - I'm new to basschat (/talk /world) and I'd love to come along if that's ok. I can make June 16th, and I can offer a lift from south birmingham (I can even pick up from new street station - it's not that far from me). cheers Joe
Hi, that sounds good, I'd like to take you up on that offer if that's OK?
11. Been listening to lots of Radiohead B sides at the moment, bassist is Colin Greenwood, he's alright. Tends to be fairly inconspicous but occasionally shows off his skills by throwing a fast line or run into the song.
12. I've heard it's possible to tow cars with E and B strings, not sure whether that's true!
13. Rotosound roundwounds, custom gauge 45-65-85-110-140
14. +1 Got his cables in my rig.
15. Hi again. Read the link for details, but in short, this is (hopefully) a permanent home now.
16. That colour is called Shell Pink IIRC.
17. Is it not a slightly darkened translucent guard? The grain seems to match the body.

Any way to get there without a car? I had a look at the map and there doesn't seem to be a train station nearby.
20. I keep strings, batteries, plectrums (not that I use them, but it's nice to know they're there), a few tools like allen keys and wire cutters in my gig bag, and I have a briefcase sized flight case for pedals and plenty of cables. If I was to take my rockstand I'd just carry it on its own I think.
21. I play a 5er...The guitarists can do what they like but I stay in BEADG lol. One of my bands has a 7 string player so he does the same, and the other guy just plays in standard. My other one is more of a recording band so the guitars are tuned to whatever fits the song...
22. I have a Roland Cube 60 guitar amp, I haven't compared it to any of the real amps but I can can a wide variety of tones out of it. It doesn't really matter to me too much if they sound like the real thing as long as the tones are good...which they are. I can go from a decent clean tone, to a more coloured clean tone with the Fender Deluxe Reverb model, all the way up to the fairly extreme Mesa Boogie model.
23.
A 110 'E' string gives me the frights.
I use a 45-65-85-110-140 (BEADG). I find a 110 for the E is nice and tight but I can still bend it.
24. Buy and sell cheap stuff to get started, people don't mind risking low feedback when it's a few quid. Or yeah, you can buy stuff first.
25. There is a Christchurch in Dorset...I wouldn't go for it though, not enough information. Unless he gets back to you...
