  1. I'm selling my Traben Chaos Core "Whisky Burl" 5 String as I've just got too many basses, so grab a bargain. I got this imported from the U.S.A at some considerable cost back in 2010 and have not been disappointed with it at all. It's the more conservative looking bases from the Traben range and it's quite rare to find one of these in the UK these days (especially a 5-string) with the Aguilar pre-amp and Rockfield active pickups. They're quite versitile as both single coils and humbuckers and with the five-way switch you can change the setup instantly (see diagram below).

I've recorded two albums with it and the Aguilar OBP-3 pre-amp really sounds great for recording and live work. The Rockfield pickups really sound great (why they've never made replacement bass pickups in this range is beyond me). The 5 string neck is wide and flat yet really comfortable. Its set up nicely and its never let me down.

    Specs are:

    BRIDGE: Chaos internal bridge
    SCALE: 35"
    NECK CONSTRUCTION: bolt on
    PICKUPS: two Rockfield® humbuckers
    ELECTRONICS: Aguilar OBP-3 pre-amp
CONTROLS: three-band eq with volume and five-way switch
    BODY: Royal Paulonia
    TOP: burled maple
    FRETBOARD Rosewood
    NUT synthetic

There's a "2" stamped on the back of the neck which I think means it was a second but as far as I can tell, the reason for this is some white paint on the battery compartment protective film as seen in the pic. Protective film can be removed if you want. I think the straplocks on it are Dunlop.

    Looking for £320.

  2. I have a DHA DI-EQ. Not sure what the model number is but on the back is says "custom shop" dated "Aug 09" and the seriel number is "0673". No idea if this is a one-off or not. I don't think it's working at the moment either.

The Ian Hill has the most comfortable neck imho of the Euro Spectors as it has the classic Kramer NS2 dimensions....

Is it more comfortable than the Doug Wimbish Spector neck? That's the slimmest neck I've played on a 4 string Spector.

Yep, that works. I've had no issues with the send/return myself but have been reliably informed that bridging them will help avoid any issues arising. I'm happy to remove the patch lead if it bothers a potential buyer... lol! ;)

Apparently they corrode over time and cause sound issues. Bridging it with a patch cable prevents this so regardless, you've done the right thing by bridging it.

Damn you ... I'm so tempted by this!

  5. Really surprised this is still here and if I had the cash, I'd be all over this. I have the later 1000rb and it's a monster amp. I've heard great things about the 400 and 800RB heads, especially for recording.

Just touching on the effects loop thing ... if you do find you have sound issues (severe crackling, loss of sound or intermittent sound) a good fix I've found (did it on a 5150 guitar head) was to spray contact cleaner down the send and return jacks and put a jack lead in and out a few times to spread the cleaner (also worth doing the inputs too). Fixed mine up like new.

I've not personally tried one, but if the various reports on the internet are to be believed, then not really. Plus the lower notes took longer to register with the pitch to MIDI conversion (you can't beat the laws of physics).

I remember I had a Boss Octaver pedal in the late 80s and it also had problems with low notes - it'd freak out on a low E note, like my missus trying to make her mind up whether to stay in or go out.

  7. The bottom line is if they can't provide a demonstrable linear graph to show the difference between their cables and others then they can be 'effed off without a second thought. Anything presented without evidence can be dismissed without evidence. Same goes for valves and "tonewood" (in electric instruments) - another huge scam.

  8. As long as you get a reasonably good quality cable, that'd be fine.

The whole super-expensive cable thing is just a massive con, just like tone wood and valves/tube making a difference to your sound.

Looking at those pics inside the amp, you can actually smell the heady mixture of 1960’s dust and hot valves.   Just glorious.......😍

I’ve vowed no more guitar gear, but bump for splendid vintage goodness.

That is so true. I walked into a studio yesterday which smelt of exactly what you mention there, coupled with damp basement smells and stale alcohol (usually from split beer from punters). That to me just conjures up images of loud music and hard work. Love it !
