1. I recently played a strunal that was from the factory. Um it had a lot of white glue going on and not much else. Pretty expensive too for what it was. I'd go with the hora ones.
2. Ikea! one of those short fold up ones if you like both feet on the ground or a slightly higher one if you only want on foot.
3. Theres an old american standard for sale in Dublin from one of the symphony players. https://www.musicalchairs.info/double-bass/sales Scroll down till you see the one by Ed. Might be worth checking out.
4. Yep, got it for a couple of weeks to try out. Got a few big concerts so some excellent testing grounds.
5. Just a little update to say I have the bass. And surprisingly both virgin and stenaline have been really nice. Virgin gave me two seats to lay the bass in and stenaline are letting me bring it on bored. So all around a long but stress free trip with a new bass
6. A good thing to help relax and relieve tension is to be aware of how much tension your applying and then increase while playing, try and double it and then release and see if you can relax to a point lower then before and repeat it and just gradually release all the tension slowly.
7. Also watch how much pressure your applying onto the bow and the string. If it's more then the weight of your arm and then its an uneven amount as you get to the tip that could cause it. Just be aware of how much pressure there is and let the weight of the bow and the weight of your arm holding it do the work. Don't apply more.
8. I'd love to try it one day. Fourths work at the moment but it does seem like it would make more sense to tune in fifth's when playing with an orchestra. It does seem to be more work for bassists to stay in tune with the orchestra then anyone else. You see whole sections make faces as they slip out of tune.
9. I'm been in contact with stenaline and they say I can bring it aboard but say I may have to put it in the luggage room on the ship which I can carry it in and secure if it's not quite.
10. Im pretty sure you cant fly with a bass in the cabin anymore, safety hazards and i wouldn't dream of it going in the hold without a hardcase. I've opted for train and ferry, it'll be annoying and slow but i should get the bass home unharmed. Read the Rufus Reid book as well and it would be great if i could do that. Even paying for two seats on an Aer lingus or Ryanair flight would be cheaper then the above. And fatback, i just wouldn't be happy playing a bass for a few days and then paying, going to bring it to rehearsal and concerts and see how it sits with an orchestra. Also maybe in the end it would feel comfortable to begin with but after a while find flaws or awkward stretches that just make the bass to annoying to enjoy playing. It's a Bryant by the way, going to go try a George Panorma and a John Lott bass. Luckily my teacher has both of these so i have a bit of an idea but you never about different tolerances or slight changes.
11. Car is too expensive. Under 21 and all that jazz. Any one taken a train in Virgin trains and not had trouble. My emails with them imply they won't play ball and be nice

13. Never crossed my mind to rent a car, presume it's expensive? Also not sure if ive had my full license for long enough. Two years?
14. Anyone Ever able to get a useful answer out of Virgin Trains? They can't seem to tell me if i need to book an extra ticket for it or if i can just turn up and hop on. EDIT: Virgin Trains have now told me no, i cant bring a double bass on their trains. Im really not too familiar with other train companies in the UK. London Midlands seem to playing fair now.
15. Cheers rev. Didn't think of one if those. If still probably train/ferry it back to be on the safe side. Tinyd- sent if email to Virgin rail last night and have been doing a hell if a lot of googling. Pretty mixed answers. I could fly over with my case and then train it back. Would a case be too bulky to get in the hold??
16. Some exciting news in the works possibly resulting in a new bass. Anyway I'm trying to figure out the best way to possible get a bass from Birmingham to Dublin safely. I don't have a car is the main problem first of all. I'm thinking at the moment, train from Birmingham to Holyhead and a ferry over to Dublin. Waiting to see how happy the maker (from around the Birmingham area) is with that idea though. Just trying to come up with other ways to get the bass over to Dublin for a trial? Any help/idea's would be greatly appreciated. Sam
17. Playing Better is one point i can think of.
18. Been googling teachers in dublin. €30 for a lesson seems pretty good. Ill have to have a go and report back.
A couple of posts here mention warming up - what do you normally do before playing?
Stretches before anything else, loosen up the shoulders, arms and lower back. Then long bows, really slowly - gets the instrument working and your right hand. Bring in the left hand with slow chromatics with no vibrato what so ever. E over two octaves and G over 3. Then repeat but with vibrato. Then again but slurred to make sure i have the right amount of tension on the bow. Scales and arpeggio's slurred and un-slurred. Gets both hands moving around and your body bending with the instrument. Usually takes about an hour but very worthwhile if your doing another 3-4 hours afterwards. Oh and i also practice starting notes. Anyone else got there warmup routine??
19. Bozo's a bit of a beast. What was he like to study with? But Jacqueline Du Pre's version will always be top for me. Cello but amazing. And if your struggling with vibrato try and emulate her's, it doesnt get much better or musical. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i91RX2LhY8s
20. Something i've been thinking about for a while. I'd prefer to talk to an expert first and getting a few pointers before diving in. Can't see a downside though to something that helps you become more relaxed and potentially increase the length of your career. Any good books/video material to expand on the subject??
21. I've seen a lot of older bass's (1850's-1950's) that the fingerboards have what i presumed had faded. Maybe another wood apart from ebony but defiantly a lot of brown tinge coming through. Also i was sold my bass as a hybrid. Turns out it's a fully carved tone monster. So you never know what you'll end up with. And these Romanian instruments do seem really good from the few others i've come across. Better then one's coming out of the czech republic, china and even some of the cheap german variants.
22. Nope but good luck. Were did you apply? Im practicing like crazy for master's auditions next year.
23. I keep mine with the endpin out in a corner and there's been no problems ever so far as i can tell. I'd really like a stand that you could leave the end pin out while its on the stand but none seem to allow this.
24. Hi Floyd. What's the pizz sound like on the innovations? I'll defiantly add them to my list.
