1. Ahhhh, concerto no.2. I spend hours a week on this. I've changed my fingerings about a billion times so far(no understatement). Also i hear Tom Martin is going to japan to play this on bottesini's own 3 string Amati which is over there. Exciting stuff.
2. How much more tension then the belcanto's did the originals have roughly would you say? I don't think building up left hand strength will ever be a problem just a bit if an annoyance
3. Ah just wondering. My Romanian and one other i came across have oversized scroll (couldn't remember the name). Just wondering if it was part of the family.
4. Thanks for the response's. I was thinking if there was only one type of string we would probably all be happier and better players. You do sell the originals well Geoff, im not a fan of really high tension but i suppose if i were to keep them low they would be manageable. List of strings to try know, Going to put the Original flatchrome at the top, i think my teacher might use these but ill have to check and try out. Flatchrome's next Kaplans afterwards. Yikes going to have to win the lotto. Thinking about it some more, i think the reason i want to change more then anything, is that belcanto's are amazing but boring. Maybe it's the fact that there so easy to play...... or im going crazy. 3 gigs yesterday, never again...
5. Nice bass. Does it have an oversized headstock?
6. Cool beans pete. Im still thinking about kaplans but have a feeling they would be just as dark as the belcanto's.
7. I asked on talk bass but their mildly useless over there. Any have experience with either flat chrome steels or permanents in orchestral tuning. Mainly for bowing and solo work. Looking for something brighter then the belcanto's which are great orchestral string but the e lacks projection. So flat chrome steels and permanents. Cheers Sam
8. I've sent lots of emails to rinat and chi chi about playing and cadenza's especially and always got great replies on how to approach it. Really great gays and gals.
9. A pretty boring version but done well and sounds good. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tcLJb-GqrWY
10. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RNj-lmufK-g Here you go.
11. Revolution solo into a g-k mb500 and neo 1x12. Sounds pretty decent. Never had a problem with feedback or running out of volume. You can hear the g-k though.
12. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=30g8AlVVebQ This is just fantastic. And this is even better, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y4zRKT_hWAg Im having a bit of a chi chi nwanoku week.
13. Brilliant. I'll look into it. Probably a trip to the luthier for me though. I'm terrified if doing DIY work to my bass
14. And my endpin is non removable. Seems it's the bass buggie. Cheers for the responses guys. I should have checked my endpin earlier. Also reason for thread was that I had to carry my bass for a couple of hours between Wednesday and Thursday and I'm taking the weekend of practicing to leave my shoulders to rest as they were pretty uncomfortable. Going to book an appointment with the uni physio to make sure everything's ok.
15.
Great photo of the Yita bow. I've heard good reviews from pretty much everyone I know who's bought one. Great value too.
There good bows. I'd really like to compare it to a finale.
16. Too much to think about know. Bass buggie or wheel? My bass is pretty sturdy though, probably too much bracing. There is quite a lot of cobblestone in dublin which I can try to avoid but now and again.... Also another thing, would a wheel make the bass too tall getting onto a bus? Or puttin it into the back seat of a car. Buss buggie or onyx
17.
Lol, a onyx wheel.
Any advantages or disadvantages?
I have a good solution; I use public transport all the time with my double bass (I can't drive.. yet) and use to carry my bass on my back all the time. (It was hard work even as a young man) I recently brought a new double bass and it's just too heavy or (I would imagine) to carry it on my back between gigs. I sound like an advert but even though at first it's a bit of a nightmare to set up, once you work out how it goes it's brilliant. I use the Bass Buggie; 1) Unlike bass wheels it's more stable and vibrates less, you don't need one hand on your bass at all times. (not that I frequently remove my hands or anything. ) 2) My ext concern was how to protect the instrument and it's very easy to move around and it vibrates less than endpin wheels. 3) My concern was then the tension of the string around the bass to keep it in position, according to Martin Penning (who is a genius and a really nice guy) I would in no way damage the instrument by putting pressure around the strings of the instrument. I use it with a turtle case and it's useful because the instrument isn't raised in height very much, keeping the height as minimum as possible. It's really hard to give a depth review but the bass buggie is great. http://www.contrabas...bass_buggie.htm
Cheers for the info, its what im leaning towards most at the moment.
18. Here's another one, featuring my yita bow. I bring it to gigs like these and keep the Bizan for orchestral and completely acoustic gigs.
19. I'd had a look at that. I really don't like the idea of pressure being applied to the top of the fingerboard which could result in bending.
20. I can only stop an A but ideally really need to get to a B for some of the solo concerto's. I originally couldn't even stop a G so had it extended to an A but now..... Ill probably see if i can have a curved solo extension added. Also it's nice when you have to play harmonics up high to have some visual representation on the fingerboard of where they'll be. Yeah she's pretty big. It was sold to me as a 3\4 size when i didn't know but its closer to 4/4 or 7/8's in size.
21. She's very pretty, even with her battle scars. Need to get the fingerboard extended again though. Also a revolution solo pickup through an ampeg cl and 8x10 cab. Right behind me, not one bit of feedback at all. Sounded great both pizz and arco.
22. Here's one from a gig in whelans.
23. I've been looking into getting a bass buggy as im fed up of carrying my double bass. Usually end feeling really tired before rehearsals and gigs. Anyone got one? care to shed some light on it. Or other wheels in general that you've found useful. I need something that can handle plain pavements, cobblestones at times, and getting on and off buses and in and out of cars, easily but that i can also wheel for 40 mins or so to a gig and back again. Cheers Sam H
24. Great news. Just keep getting regular lessons now. It takes a long time o become critical of your playing and practice and thats where a teacher becomes useful. Always be critical of everything you do and practice.
25. Great tips. I have millions if those little ikea pencils in me at all times. In my bag, pocket, case etc. The Rosin placement also is a great idea honing to have to give it a go
