1. Doh! If only you were a bit (OK, a lot) nearer, I'd be popping round for a cuppa and a closer look!
  2.
But it's so worth keeping it going. BERNARD PURDIE. what a feel got a good purdie story. A friend of mine who drums for a well known band was in New York with Elliott Randall (with whom he is friends) They were attending some big shot music do and Bernard Purdie was there Elliott took my mate up to Bernard and said "hey Bernard I want you to meet my friend, he's one of the best drummers in the world" my mate nearly fainted... some may not know that Elliott Randall was with Dan in the early years and I think played the gtr solo on 'reeling in the years'
You mean 'feel' like this? Purdie groove HAHA! I bet your mate wanted the ground to open up!
  3. Not that I want to keep this thread going just for the sake of it (!), but let's just have that one more time ... Peg - instrumental

Bought a Musicman Stingray from Paul a couple of weeks ago (stingray). I found Paul an easy guy to deal with. He was happy to answer my questions about the 'Ray and flexible when arranging a pick-up. All in all a nice, straightforward transaction. I wouldn't hesitate to buy from Paul in the future. Oh, and as for the 'Ray - it's a real corker!
  5.
Bump
Hey Russ When you say standard pups, do you mean those original to this bass? BTW, the pics are good but for great pics you really need to borrow one of Lysdexia's guitar stands!
  6.
Well, it started off as Indie Pop, but we have now (with a new singer) taken a turn towards a more dark bluesey sound that I think is really working.. Not quite up to performance standard yet, but good enough to be exciting! I would strongly recommend joining a band whatever your standard though - I don't think I would have the persistence to practice and improve without that impetus.. And it is a lot of fun!
Had the opportunity to play with a couple of people recently. It makes a big difference! You're obviously improving fast; I see you have a gig sorted. Hope all goes well!
  7. Thanks for the input guys. A '4 it is (why overlook the obvious!) and passive too. Unless something second-hand comes up in the meantime I'll be picking up a Yamaha BB414.
  8.
No! the bb714bs has many tones with the woofer pup off it sounds like a p with the woofer on it sounds monsterous! the woofer does emulate an eb0 very well infact, the pup is more dynamic being able to pick-up string pulls and bends. I cant recomend the bb714 more, it is a superb instrument, well made, good pups and electrics. incredibly fast playable neck. andy
Cheers Andy - sounds impressive. Have you any experience with the BB414? Would you say the BB714 produces more rock-oriented tones? Oh, and does the woofer pup get in the way of slapping? :-)
  9. OK, so I finally decided to buy a BB414. It's due in this week in fact. Now I'm really curious about this! Any idea how they compare? How does the neck pickup work out? Is it useable on it's own or really just to supplement the P? I'm guessing the BB714 sounds more Gibson-like whereas the BB414 sounds more Fender-like (??)
not as baseball 'battish' as the attitude but fairly chunky! billy described it as a sort of pj hybrid, thin and fast but I have no idea what he was thinking on that! its not thin about p in size but fairly chunky front to back - its 42mm at the nut - it is though fast! http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...mp;#entry348705 andy
Any idea how the bb714 compares to bb414 re build quality (quite a bit more expensive bit looks very similar). Would you think the range of sounds available are more (or less) varied (or just different). Was going for the bb414 but am curious now!
  11.
I am not really sure I _have_ progressed to be honest! But I have been going through some online lessons: http://www.studybass.com/ (anyone else have any thoughts on the quality of these? They seem pretty good in my inexperienced opinion!) Practicing at home (trying to do 1 hour a day.. but it seems to be more like one session of 3 hours followed by a couple of days of not managing to find a spare moment... although once I pick up the bass, I seem to not be able to put it down -- several very late nights as a result!) ..and, of course, playing with the band... How about you? James
Thanks - I bookmarked that a while ago. Will go back for another look! I'm sure I must have progressed but I think I need a bit more external input! I'm not in a band, so lessons may be the way to go. I bought 'Bass Guitar for Dummies' which has been useful but I think the structure of lessons might help too. What sort of stuff are you playing with the band?
  12. Thanks guys. Looks like a '5 is an option then. I'll definitely have a look at some (the Soundgear would be on the list). But I take Rayman's point about going with gut feeling, which would probably mean a 4-string. I'll let you know which way I jump.
  13. Hi Ziggy How is this A4 compared to the A6 you had previously? How versatile is it sound-wise? Cheers.
  14.
Welcome to the forum Advice? Don't worry about mistakes as much as I do!
Thanks. If I worried too much about mistakes I think I'd have stopped already!
  15.
Welcome from another late-starter newbie. No advice from me, but isn't bass fantastic!?
But isn't it tho' Itching to learn more. How have you progressed: books, lessons or just playing, playing playing?
  16. I'm new to this so forgive me if I'm repeating something that's been discussed previously. I've been playing for a few months and I'm in the market for my first bass (I'm currently playing a loaner) and have a question. I've read burpsters 'buying your first bass' thread and it makes perfect sense to me to start on a 4-string; it's what I'd planned to do. It's the simplest option and I'm all for that! However (you knew that was coming didn't you!), a musician friend mentioned to me recently that if he was starting to play bass today he'd start on a 5-string instead of a starting on 4 and then having to get used to the extra string (which is what he did). The only reason he didn't start on a 5 was that they weren't available at the time. He seemed to think that there was no obvious downside to playing a 5 (other than an extra string to mute). In fact the ability to play notes a few frets higher might even make things easier. I'd be interested to hear your opinions. (If you haven't already discussed this until your blue in the face of course. In which case, I'll get my coat!)
  17. Hi All Been popping in for a while and decided it's time to join the ranks! Only been playing for a few months. A kindly friend has loaned me a bass and amp to get started (thanks Paul). Now gassing for my own! Plenty to ask but guess this isn't the forum for that. If you do have any general advice for a late-starter newbie though I'd be pleased to hear it. Cheers.
