1. Interesting review. The Promethean's definitely tempting! A slightly less convenient option obviously but anybody able to comment on how the Promethean P5110 combo compares to the P500H head and P110C set-up soundwise?
2. Thanks for all the comments. Been looking around to see who has some of the recommendations in stock to try out. Not a great success (!) but Digital Village have a Viola and a SR505 (one string too many but should give me a good idea). Cheers
3. Thanks for the input on this; some useful comments and realistic options (and some more esoteric ones too!). Didn't make it to the the London Bass Guitar Show this weekend so will find another way of trying some of these out!
4. OK, looks like I definitely need to try an SR500. The Yamaha RBXA2 could be an option - anyone got any experience? Hadn't considered a Hofner violin-type bass. It'd be nice for those McCartney basslines - how does it work in other contexts? Prosebass always gets positive comments on BC. Still not entirely sure of the possible downsides of short-scale (?) FWIW, budget would have to be covered by the eventual sale of my Stingray so that might rule out a few options.
5.
I've tried both and there's not a lot in it, but I would say that the SR600 is slightly heavier IMO.
Did you notice much difference in the sound of the SR500/SR600?
6. If I make it to the London Bass Guitar Show this weekend I'll be packing my digital scales!
7.
The Rees F-Light is just under 3kg/6lb! I would expect the ash-bodied SR600 to be slightly lighter than the SR500.
Now that's what I call lightweight!
8. Some interesting options here! Anyone care to get the kitchen scales out and give me any specific weights? Just been browsing the Ibanez website and see they also do an SR600. Looks like the same spec as the SR500 but with an ash body. Is this likely to be lighter or heavier than mahogany-bodied SR500?
9. Thanks guys, great responses - plenty to think about already! Keep 'em comin'
10. OK, I won't bore you with my medical history, suffice to say I have some pre-existing neck & shoulder issues that are presenting a problem when playing. As a result I've already had to suspend playing a couple of times and park my Stingray in the stand or pack it away in its case. Being conscious of my posture when playing certainly helps but if a lighter bass means I can play for longer without discomfort then I need to consider it. So, what are my options folks? I realise this isn't exactly a unique scenario so thought you might have some experiences to share. The only bass I can remember playing that was noticeably lightweight was an Ibanez SR (can't remember which model). But I've seen one recently up for sale on here because it wasn't lightweight enough to solve a back problem - so maybe they're not consistently lightweight (?). For reference, my Stingray isn't exactly a boat anchor at 9lb! I've never considered it previously, but I suppose I shouldn't rule out short-scale as an option. Although, other than potentially being lighter, I don't know the pros and cons of short-scale. Anyone care to enlighten me?
11. Thanks for the renewed interest folks - and for the bump lanark (your commission is in the post!) Sold today - thanks Dan, hope you enjoy!
12. Back from holiday bump! Had some interest in this but still available.
13. A brief romance! I had intended taking this down the budget Pino route with a traditional bridge and flatwounds but now have other priorities so it has to go! It's nicely set up and very playable - Squier really seem to have hit the mark with these CV's. Some comments from fellow BC'ers here: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=84210 http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=90829 No case, so collection only. £200. 14.
I don't have an official MM case for mine but given that a 'ray 4 has a 3+1 headstock I'd say no. I just go check if one will fit my custom made MM case. edit : It fits mine but then it does have a bit of extra "head" room. The body fits in surprisingly well - it wiggles about though.
Cheers. There seems to be room around the headstock; I'm assuming EB use the same cases for the SR4 and SR5 (?) Body is quite a snug fit though and not sure how much the body shape/size differs.
15. Anyone know if a Precision will fit into a Musicman SR4 hardcase? Just curious!
16. So how do you recognise fellow BC'ers at this sort of thing? Adonis-like physique from years of carting a heavy bass rig? Carnation in the lapel and rolled-up copy of the Times? Maybe one of those snazzy BC shirts? Or just the faint air of superiority?
17. Looking forward to this! Curious to see how DV are going to fit 200 people in too!
18. I really fancy trying one of these! I'll PM you.
19. Thanks, that gives a much better idea. Not overly familiar with Sadowskys but had a look and I see what you mean; very similar to the Modern. Hmm, something to think about. Have a bump in the meantime!
20. Not sure if these have been screened before but thought I'd mention it as have just turned over to find it's on now (and repeated later). There's a profile of Nick Drake and also the Barbican gig from Jan 2010 - various current muso-types and their interpretations ( ) but featuring Danny Thompson! If you're a fan of Nick Drake/Danny Thompson I'm sure it'll be worth a look. Actually, if you've never heard of either it's probably worth a look. If you not sure who ... oh well you get the idea!
21. That's very pretty! Any chance of some more pics? Is it standard Fender-type dimensions?
22. I met up with Chris a little while ago for a few lessons (electric bass). A really nice guy, he has a wealth of knowledge and as a working bass player is also able to give an interesting insight into the world of the professional musician. He has a very broad musical repertoire so whatever you're playing Chris will help you nail it!
23. OK, here's my 2008 SR4. I took some pics recently as I was thinking about selling. Turns out I'm a bit reluctant to part with it!
