  1. Paint it to match the Father Christmas on the sideboard!
  2. There is another video somewhere, I'll look for it. I only play a 4, but quickly fell into sliding my thumb down the strings similar to this. This wasn't the video that gave me the idea.
  3. The video here is a bit longer, but shows some quite astonishing work. https://www.shapertools.com/en-gb/origin/overview
  4. I read that and went What the...? But as described it sounds awesome. How does it know where it is? Are there tracking wheels so it knows (like reverse stepper motors)? How do you position it in the right place on the workpiece? Do you begin with a datum point on the body somewhere and go from there? Or three datum points to define the plane? So many questions!!
  5. And rather good it looked too!
  6. Thanks, I must have missed the bit that said the chip was moving.
  7. Why would it move, if it isn't doing so now and will have the fretboard glued on top? Or are you just being ultra careful and removing it to replace do you KNOW it won't move?
  8. Ignorant of Solihull here. Why do you need to remove that piece of wood? The neck is functional as it is, I thought the intention was only to replace the fretboard. What have I missed?
  9. Maybe worth contacting Wal and asking? You're being totally honest in replacing the board so everyone knows it's not a 100% Wal, they may well be inclined to help make it sound good as it still has their name on the headstock.
  10. But the precise positioning of the shinto plane, the 6.5mm drill and the luthier's left leg remains a mystery to the uninitiated. I know, I tried it with a stuck bolt, recited "FFS Come off", and the clock fell off the wall
  11. Edited the post above to put a disclaimer on and protect the thread. Not sure it helps TBH. End of thread derail - back to the magnificent Andy and his amazing 6.5mm tool and steady hands.
  12. There's a can-do attitude on both sides! It's a bit late, but could we get @Andyjr1515 to fix Brexit too? (Not that I am suggesting @Andre_Passini's bridge is in any way like that particular shambles)
  13. Best buy: Korg pitchblack advance tuner. Large and bright so I can see it even with my reading glasses on! Also very accurate so any mistakes are clearly mine. Worst buy: Rotosound RS66LF Swing bass strings. Bought as a change from D'Addario EPS165 Pro Steels, and I wanted to support UK manufacturing, but I don't like them as much. They weren't as good to start with, and went dull very quickly. I should probably change them, but I'm playing so little it doesn't' seem worth the expense.
  14. I think this unlikely, and it's probably just you. 🇯🇵
  15. Agree the music was OK, and better to do something than nothing. Still reeling from the video though!
  16. Gordon Bennett!! Managed 40s.
  17. I listened to an interview on SBL a while back, annoyingly I can't remember who the player was. He plays Alembics and said, quite simply, that he could play things on those that he couldn't play on other basses. Much like the violin bow above, he was good enough to feel the difference between basses and those enabled him to play better. I am sure he could make my £250 bass sound awesome as well, but I bet he would prefer to take his own bass on a paying gig.
  18. Been all through the 2019 thread and couldn't find and pics of the red one, or any idea who owned it. 🙁
  19. Wasn't there something with a set of these at the last midlands bash? I'm sure there was something with a pretty complicated pickup on the left by the window. Two up from Luke & me in the corner. Or was I hyper having eaten too much cake and am imagining it?
  20. Thanks @lemmywinks. Will check out that site too. Brawley sourced materials and parts from Korea and assembled in California, so Korean tuners makes sense.
  21. A couple of days back I was about to start practice, tuned the D a little bit, and the tuning peg sheared. See first pic. Not even high tension, just bringing it into tune. Since the bass is 17yr old and has the A tuner replaced before me I will get a complete new set anyway. I took this set off to see what make they are and what they weigh. There are identification marks on the tuners, see other pic. The trebble side are marked D and the bass side B if that helps. Total weight is 232g, which is pretty good, so will replace with licenced Hipshots I think. Still curious to know what these are.
  22. Something like that would look great as an inlay at the 12th fret. And The Galaxy Bass would be a cool name. There are a few astrophotographers on BC.
  23. Settles in to watch master at work. 🙂 A quick Google about the number 63 and it's applicability to naming OTT bass guitars came up with this on Wikipedia: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/63_(number) Amongst the many options: M63 is the Sunflower Galaxy, maybe a bit hippy. Element 63 is Europium, will be considered political. The sterile offspring of a horse and a donkey has 63 chromosomes, not an application analogy to Andy's builds. I reckon there will only be 42 discernible tones, so you could still call the bass Douglas.
  24. Not in the Baptists 🙂 "Proof of Concept". But I shall forever now read it as "Piece of Cauliflower", which will make future project plans much more entertaining. Thanks @stewblack 👍
  25. Hadn't noticed they were videos, logged in from a secure works PC (on a very, very tedious conference call) and it just shows the static image, not as a link. Will check out later.
