It's easy to over think this and I really don't agree you need all those modal scales and three position arpeggios n all.  I have (had) much the same problem. You mention you play rock and funk:

Point 1:  A very recent issue for me (this week in fact) is that bass is the most important insturment in funk. Funk is about being right on the groove but also needing to know well defined and sometimes complex bass lines that the audience will expect. That's hard and a bit of a mission in some cases.  OTOH, most rock and blues, unless you're doing covers, just requires building a melodic bridge between drums and everything else.  You'd be surprised how few notes you need providing you're right in the pocket and work intelligently with the drums, something I learned from Scott Devine.  Even just root  and 5th can sound great if augmented by the occasional octave root, ghost note and approach notes.

Point  2. Practice a lot to songs you know well.  Keep playing until your fingers figure out for themselves what works, having regard to point 1 above.

Thanks for this.  Sticking to roots and fifths and working with drums is also good advice :).

The fact that you had to resort to looking at the guitarists hands means that you have some severe deficiencies in your listening skills. This is probably because like me, you are by nature an analytical person and so your response to a problem is more analysis.

I would suggest playing along with a spotify channel trying to work out song key then some chord roots. Also if you want to punish yourself (in a good way) with more formal ear training then look at bruce arnolds "one note" and "sight singing" courses.

I believe this is 100% the issue, both in my listening skills and being analytical in approach to resolving problems.

I will definitely take this advice on-board - seems like an excellent thing to practice identifying song key centre and their associated chord progressions :)

Just over 48hours until we start :D

Who got new bits for Xmas? Who’s got new bits on the way before NYs?

    Si

NPD for me today, since Santa didn't bring it I ordered myself the DG Hyper Luminal compressor.

2019 feels like a long 12 months,. I'm GASing for a Vintage Deluxe and a Para EQ  ☹️☹️

Never think there’s any point in talking about who used what strings, I always think they are more to give the player a certain feel as opposed to a certain sound.

Agree to the extent of debating Ernie Ball vs. D'Addario vs. Elixir round wounds.

But I do think discussing whether a  player uses flats vs roundwounds Vs steels is valid, especially for a newbie like @stewblack 's 'friend' as they do have different tonal properties

To me it sounds like a slightly clipping DI, and not that pleasant.

I love Joe's playing but I've never been in love with his tone.

To me he sounds much better on the latest Vulfpeck album, Hill Climber. Less nasally and harsh to my ears.

  6. I'm sure some one will have a more authoritative response but from what I recall reading his Jazz bass is strung with old Rotosound steels, his P Basses with La Bella Flats and his new MM signature has Ernie Ball cobalt flatwounds.

Amp wise I believe he uses a Markbass Little Mark Tube 800 through a 4x10 cabinet, though in some of the Vulfpeck YouTube videos he seems to play through an Ampeg Combo.

I think the majority of his tone comes from his technique and EQ.  I have a Markbass LMT, a 4x10 cabinet and a P Bass with Labella flats and I sound nothing like Joe, even when playing his lines.

  7. I have a few things I want to sell.  Obvioslusly I have listed them in the BC Marketplace but I also wanted to put them else where to improve the chances of a quick sell.  What Facebook groups are recommended as good places to sell bass gear?

  8. I've taken the spec below from a previous Basschat classified :

I assume it is correct for this cabinet.

    TYPE: Front-ported
    enclosure
    HANDLES: 500 watts
    RMS 8 ohms
    DIMENSIONS: 629 (w)
    x 413 (d) x 629mm (h)
    WEIGHT (kg/lb): 23/50
    SPEAKERS: 4 x ES
    1040XL16 drivers and
    a T2004 Tweeter

  9. Eden Nemesis NSP410 Cabinet.

I bought this off a friend about 3 years ago as a 2nd 410 cabinet for gigs, though it proved to be total overkill and so I never used it.  As such it has been sitting in my garage and so I've decided it's time to free the space up and move it on.

It's not in great condition as my friends cat had used it as a scratching post but apart from going a bit fluffy its not too bad (see pictures).   I've tested it at home volume levels and it seems fine, I currently have my Markbass LMT hooked up.

    Collection from Watford (WD17).

  10. * UPDATE, Cabinet now sold so just the head available*

This has been my gig rig for the past 2 years (that's only a handful of gigs mind).  I've recently purchased a Hybrid Markbass head which I'm running through an old Eden cabinet (also for sale) and I no longer need my GK rig. Included in the sale is:

    • GK MB500 Amp Head
    • CK CX410 8ohm Cabinet SOLD
    • Foot switch for boost channel
    • GK Gig Bag for Amp Head
    • Power, Speakeron and Footswitch cables
    • I believe I also have the box in the loft (to be confirmed)

    £275 for the head.

In good working order and condition though there are a few cosmetic marks to the top of the head and on the cabinet
I would say Amp is 4/5 condition and cabinet 3.5/5.  The gain control pot is a bit scratchy so probably needs a clean.

Collection from WD17 3AQ or I will send via insured postage for an extra £15.

    Specs on GK's website.
