Just saying that any decent venue wanting full compliance with everything will have their side in order too. We have our gear tested every year at a rehearsal , get a local guy to do everything while it’s set up. Think he charges around £100, takes him 2 or 3 hours IIRC. We do theatres and they nearly always want evidence it’s been done, as do a lot of hotels now too

I don't think it's an unreasonable ask for a venue to request that a band they've booked have the appropriate coverage; assuming it's a paid gig.  But I agree they should be able to demonstrate they meet the required standards too.

As per the above.  Do a lot of venues require this?  I presume pros have it? But what about amateurs?

Two venues we played last year required us to have it - they weren't proper venues, sports clubs etc and needed it for their insurance purposes.

Fortunately, as an amatuer with a full time job I was able to get a colleague in our facilities team do the testing for me.  Quotes I got ran at about £75 to have all the equipment for the full band tested (suspect I could have got it cheaper if I kept looking).

I'm in (to varying degrees) about 5 bands at present and they are all friends. I won't work with people I can't get on with. I don't earn enough for that! I've done it in the past and life is too short.

How on earth do you have time for five bands??!!!! 😱

If by "practicing scales" people mean aimlessly playing them from root to root all over the neck, then the benefits are going to be minimal.

    ^^ this

Knowing the scale / mode, how to play it and how it is constructed is important but what I have learnt the frustrating way is that unless you can apply it musically it has no value.

I'm changing my approach to learning sclaes & modes by 1, doing some circle of fifth, two octave and chord tones over chord progression exercises mixed with a big chunk of time just jamming to backing tracks / songs with those scales and getting a feel wmcof what sounds good.

The latter part is what is improving me as a player

So, I looked at the updates here. Firstly, incomplete as I suspect funded by marketing, so the whole Boden thing missed. But also how little there is for bass.... The Geddy pedal looks good as does the Ibby GW but that's a refinement on a 20-year old design. Is that all there is? Darkglass - where are you?

I think they are adding additional content over the weekend.  There is at least 1 new item on there since I posted the link.  Hopefully they'll cover the Darkglass, Markbass stuff too .

  6. Regarding the electric, I've always thought that if I ever got a professional gig like working with a theatre I'd keep well away from boutique and just go Boss.

I've always found that Boss pedals are built like tanks, reliable and easy to operate (with the large footswitch).  Kind of everything you'd want in that kind of setting.

They are relatively inexpensive and easy to get hold of (should you need a last minute replacement).

    So I'd go:

    TU-3 Tuner

    CEB-3 Bass Chorus

    OC-3 Super Octave

  7. I've got two Heistercamp straps - handmade in Devon.  I like them both but the padded Onyx one is particularly comfy.

Right on straps! I got one from Manson's in Exeter. Leather strap, Spanish made, has a little slot for two picks at the end where you connect to the guitar body. Very comfortable, I've got it on my Stingray. Nice colours too. Mine was about £3

I've also got a Right On strap that I picked up at Bassdirect .   That is on my heaviest bass, it's nice and wide with some padding. Distributes the weight well and was about 1/2 the price of the Heistercamp ones.

I wouldn't get anything custom built before trying as many other examples of the luthiers work as can.

When I first discovered bass forums on the internet Jon Shuker was very much the "in fashion" UK custom luthier, and I do have to say that the photos on his web site of the basses he had made looked very tasty indeed. I exchanged several emails with him and was pretty much ready to have him build me a fretless, when I actually got to play some his basses at one of the Manchester Bass Day events. Nice as they looked I simply couldn't get on with any of the instruments he had on display when it came to actually playing them. I saved myself from a very costly mistake.

    That's all really interesting.

Initially the idea of a custom build was a bit of an after thought but it's really grown on me.

I really wanted to like AC guitars but the body shape designs didn't really do it for me. I guess I'm too conservative on that front.

The Shuker series 2 on the other hand looked more appealing, it also looked as though a custom body design might be possible.

I've sent an email to Mr. Shuker to start discussions but I definitely want to play some Series 2 basses to get a feel before committing to an order.  Maybe he keeps some in his workshop?

Yes, it will be announced at NAMM. The unit is expected to ship in May for the US and Europe. If you keep in eye on our Facebook page that's where most updated information is.

Gear4Music now have these listed on their website for £249.

    Estimated Delivery 9th Feb.

    https://www.gear4music.com/Guitar-and-Bass/Tech-21-SansAmp-Geddy-Lee-YYZ/2UA6?origin=product-ads&gclid=Cj0KCQiAhKviBRCNARIsAAGZ7Cd07T9UYyhxtylUhCucU3-Mb_NeI6015LiAAmmFRNCKAMtRceUiV9oaArJNEALw_wcB

From personal experience I wouldn't trust their estimated delivery dates for pre-order items (actually that also applies for their in stock items too).
