Robbie Shakespeare of Sly & Robbieimage.jpeg.d4d307371751e53e624029f4860259ef.jpeg

There’s a bit of a story about that one if anyone is interested, it was one of Aston Barrett’s early basses originally ,and when he started touring with the wailers he gave it to Robbie, Robbie thinks he might have played the Hofner on the Wailers Concrete Jungle recording

Have sent the pics to guitarguitar and they are saying there is nothing wrong with it so won’t pay the return shipment cost, disappointing but a lesson learnt.

That’s a disappointing response, maybe point them towards this thread where experienced bass players are mostly in agreement that it’s not acceptable , really hope you can get this sorted

Thanks rao, that’s a very early one by lee Perry, probably around the same time as Long shot  by the Pioneers ,

    actually I just found this,

In 1968, reggae pioneer Lee “Scratch” Perry launched his first record label, Upset Records, with the single “People Funny Boy

Not from a playing perspective but more of a listening appreciation

Really good to hear this Linus, once you start exploring and listening to the different types and styles you’ll probably find what artists appeal to you, sly and Robbie have some wonderful songs , they did an album the best of 1978-1985 which is worth a listen, I guarantee you won’t be able to resist picking up your bass to some of Robbie’s basslines,

I’d  also recommend checking out Flabba Holt who is the bass player with  Roots Radics , different style of playing to Robbie, they backed Gregory Isaac’s for years and many other artists, and as some have mentioned There’s plenty of listening on the reggae thread,

Wow. Must be quite an experience hearing it for the first time as a bass player.

Timing is everything, surprising how many bands can kill it not in a good way).

Ive heard of talking heads but I don’t think I’ve heard that one, I’m finding it better to fret the A rather than using the open A like I’ve seen in some covers, nice Bassline

  6. I was watching a series on Netflix last night and briefly caught a song in it that I’d never heard before , I instantly liked the Bassline and found out that it’s Talking Heads and psycho Killer , I’m gonna give it a try, it doesn’t sound too difficult , very catchy

  7. Really enjoyed listening to this last night by The Mighty Threes, I believe they were only around for a few years 78-79 ish and were a trio of Bernard Brown, Carlton Gregory, and Noel “Bunny” Brown from the Chosen Few, they had an album called Africa Shall Stretch Forth Her Hand which is on YouTube and well worth a listen, after a bit of digging it looks like the bass player they used was ,Clinton "Bubbles" Rowe, who I don’t know much about, nice heavy Bassline

And it is a great album.

I bought that album when it came out and I’ve still got it along with many others , definitely one of the best along with Uprising

I'm a bit confused. Your link says, 'The Legendary Pink Dots - Madame Guillotine', but my link below is 'Madame Guillotine - Legendary Pink Dots'.

I thought it was an attempt at a cover, then I noticed in the blurb on your link "Loosely based on Madame Guillotine" by The Legendary Pink Dots".

     :D

Either way, it's quite absorbing and chilled because I nearly dozed off...(nothing to do with the track, it's just been an early start and a long day).

Ignore me, stand down, and as you were.

    :D

Thanks lowdown, it just came up on my YouTube while I was driving, it’s a pretty odd track I think but I quite liked the Bassline , your right about dozing off though 😁

  10. I like  markbass and used them for years before I switched to Ampeg, I do think they have a certain sound and the VLE and VPF controls I really liked,  if you don’t want to buy another amp I believe they do a few preamp/ pedals, but I’ve never tried them

Don talking about something that has also annoyed me for a while - the often repeated online misconception that Reggae Basslines don't play on the one, and that the 'one drop' is referring to Bass.  "you can play on the one, you can play off the one, it makes no difference when you're playing over a one drop, the one drop is the drum pattern"

Yes, I thought the same when I saw the title , Ive heard it so many times, glad he put that out there .

Im quite liking this guy , he hasn’t got many videos yet but I think his channel could be interesting,
