  1. Ha Yeah, I know what you mean, just got it back from a set up & plays lovely, but I just sold it. It was a corvette $$. May buy a thumb 5 str, always wanted one. But am still enjoying the Squier P bass very much. Just seen the above post £259, that is an amazing bargain
  2. Hi, is the neck glossy, satin or natural / oil or waxed
  3. Yeah that's the same one I have, I also really like the feel of the neck & how it looks kinda aged, but not. Glad you like it.
  4. Unsure how old this thread is or if I am too late. But anyway! I was in a shop for something else & have never had any sort of hankering for a Fender, but whilst I was there I played a P Bass to scratch an annoying itch to see what the fuss was about & to my surprise I quite liked it. There were a few other P & J basses on the wall & there was a red one that caught my eye, I asked the guy if I could play that and found it really nice, I actually thought the neck felt nicer & liked the matt finish, sound wise couldn't tell any difference to the other one, maybe had a touch more at either end of the tone range. All things being equal I would of taken the red one. The weird thing is I didn't even know that it was a Squier at first, I just liked the look of it, I actually asked to play the other one 1st (I didn't know the price of either) as I thought the red one was a more expensive version. So when I found out / realised it was a Squier (I didn't even look I just played it as I wasn't particularly interested in Fenders) and it was £400 I was blown away when comparing to the Fender which I was told was £1700. BTW even if I hadn't tried the Squier in no way would I spend any where near £1700 on the Fender, to me it just didn't warrant it, couldn't work out what you'd be paying for. The guy in the shop was a P bass player for years & I got him to play both and to me they sounded so similar there was really nothing in it, he was a very good player & made both sound great. He reckoned Squier has really upped its standards with this bass and unless you 'had' to have a Fender why not get one of these, he also thought the Fender was marginally better but in no way anyway near £1300 better. However his view was that if he had the money he would probably get the / a Fender as he was one of those 'have to have a Fender' guys but probably a £1200ish one, but also admitted that he may have unconscious bias towards Fender. I was lucky I suppose to not have any bias and so could make a subjective decision, I actually preferred the red one & when factoring in the price difference, no brainer. A week later I traded my Sterling Sub 4 & I bought the Squier, I had absolutely no intention of buying when I 1st went in. Its now even made me consider selling my Warwick (which I never thought I would) and getting an affordable range 5 string bass and a 4 string fretless (and probably have change) as clearly the quality in this section of the market is much better than it used to be. Anyway that's my tuppence worth, cheers.
  5. I just got the 40th anniversary p bass, I have never been a fender (squire) guy but I tried an American P bass £1750 to see what the fuss was about. To my surprise I quite liked it, tried the Squire P (which I thought looked better) and to me it was as good, sounded the same, felt better. I think these are great for the £, I was very surprised, made me rethink my whole bass hierarchy. Anyone who buys this will be pleased GLWTS.
  6. Thanks for the advice gents, much appreciated. If I do get one I will post pics here.
  7. Hi All, Just found this thread & thought I'd put some pics of my bass on here a Corvette $$ with flame maple top. This is my 1st post so I hope the pictures come out OK. It's a lovely bass. I used to have a Streamer Jazzman but never got on with it, until I found out years later the neck was warped. This put me off the W's, but just bad luck I guess. So I strayed elsewhere for a bit but was never satisfied kept changing. But the W's keep louring me back in, I played this & loved it, I think its the neck they feel so organic. Anyway got a hankering for a Thumb now & thinking of selling this, trust its OK to ask some thumb questions here. I played a 4 string NT the other day & loved it, its about 15yrs old. But for a similar price I could get a new BO (I haven't tried the BO) would this be a better option? And I notice the BO is one control missing I think its the mid, any idea why? Also I am toying with the idea of getting 5 string, I've not really played a 5er before so I assume its just practicing & getting used to it. And one of the things I like about the thumbs are the woods & organic feel, but I saw a white one the other day 5 string BO & thought it looked really nice too, but is more expensive than the natural or stained options (which I don't understand), any opinion on a white thumb or know why its more expensive. Sorry many questions any advice would be appreciated. And hope you like the pics of the vette (if they come out OK).
  8. Wow lovely bass, I have a corvette $$ & know how good they are, this looks a bit special, good luck with it, I'm sure new owner will be very happy.
  9. I don't play fretless & I don't play 6 but what a beautiful looking bass. It's gotta suit someone & I'm sure they will love it.
  10. Cheers appreciate your time & advice. I nearly went for a berg but it was the aged thing which I struggle to get, but I know if I get one I will still hanker for a Ray. So I have a loose plan get a Ray, I don't think I can go wrong there & then secretly save some dosh & then configure my own berg on their site. Oh yeah & grow a pair so I can tell the other half.
  11. Thanks for the advice guys, (that goes to everyone who has posted here). I used to go for modern ish looking basses (hence the Warwick) but changed a few years ago to preferring more classic styles, i bought a SBMM SUB & the Warwick hardly got a look in after that (£299 vs £2200 when new) just felt better & was better when jamming in the studio apart from the HOT pick up issue. So I decided to get a proper one & they look very cool IMHO. And the sound of course. Oddly I know there are many Fender P & J aficionados but I just don't gyrate to them (not played one tho) but to me I need a bass I want to pick up first, I dunno for Fender I think Ford a lot fo dough for standard stuff. I'm not F bashing BTW just explaining my thought process & I may well be wrong. I tried a Sandberg the other day & that's put the cat amongst the pigeons, really nice feeling, sounding, playing & built bass. But I still think I need to get the Ray outta my system (or keep it in there)
  12. Thanks for the advice guys, I nearly pulled the trigger on the Ray (it's actually the 2 pick up model) which I reckon I prefer, but I think what' holding me back is that it' a maple board & I think I prefer rosewood. I say think a lot as I'm not fully sure (lack of bass buying experience) I reckon the dargie is out as I like the green but not the inlays and as NJE says a bit marmite & I really can' see the point just cos it' a different colour why pay more. I like the 25th, gives a range of sounds plays nice and I think it looks sweet, but it's £500 more than the Ray. Also it''s pretty rare. I haven' played the Ray BTW it' an eBay job. Also I've been playing on & off at home for a few years now & been going to the studio with some buds for jam sessions now & then,. I fancy joining a band & but unsure about turning up with a flash bass and people thinking who' this tosser all the gear & no idea. I know it sounds naff but it' in my mind. Cheers
  13. Hi All, new to the site & was looking for some advice. I'm considering buying a either a Stingray (natural 2013 3eq) or a Stingray (Dargie 2007 3 eq) or a 25th anniversary (reflex I think with the venetian red top) all single H. Just wanted to get thoughts as I'm selling my warwick streamer jazzman & love playing the musicmans & the dargie & 25th are obviously more as they are Ltd editions. But are they worth it, if so which is best & will they sell ok in the future if I need to (don't wanna be stuck) or is it best to get a std Ray??? Cheers for any advice.
