And without the VLE control?
Very flat response, just the sound of bass and cab pretty much. I consider Old School to be an old Ampeg type sound, which includes a fair bit of amp voicing IMO. -
I wouldn't describe my Mark Bass LMII as Hi Fi whatsoever, in fact if anything it's quite old school with its VLE control. I understand the F1 has a bit more presence as standard so that would be a bit Hi Fi I guess. MB make a variety of gear for a variety of applications, hey they even have an all valve head these days! Glad you're liking the 2x10 Mr T.
I use a slightly different fingering to DK though (staying up high for the whole verse bit rather than wanderign around as much), dont know which is better, do know he plays it brilliantly tho. Swine
If you're like me you probably finger the verse around the 8th position which makes for economy of movement. However, I understand from someone who has studied Norman, that he plays it by jumping from the 3rd to the 8th position and back again, phew! A true workout which I probably noodle through every time I pick up my bass as it makes everything else I have to play seem easier!
It might interest some to know that despite Norman using a Jazz exclusively these days, Stick was apparently played on a P with a J p/up added according to the man himself. -
After using Schaller and then Dunlop straplocks I'm using the roadies favourite, Grolsch bottle stoppers. Super secure and quite cool looking.
-
Always goes down a storm when we play it and it's one of my faves too. Except when the drummer "decides" to speed up and it becomes the attack mix. Hey I can only go so fast!
-
I was lucky enough to pick up a '63 Precision in April and since then I haven't gigged with anything else. My poor Roscoe Beck IV is wondering what it's done wrong as that was my number 1 bass. The RB is still a fantastic instrument, but the P always turns people's heads with its punch and sweet tone and from a playability POV it's a dream.

A satisfying end to what was a shocking state of affairs. Just goes to prove that BC isn't just all hot air (not a dig, I like the hot air) but that we can get things done when needed. Well done to all the participants who brought about the successful outcome.

I love MarloweDK's stuff on youtube. What I've noticed is that not matter what bass he uses, be it P or J or other, he always sounds pretty much the same tonewise. Kinda puts any GAS thoughts on the back burner (but not for long eh?).
-
I take it that stuff is for bodies (?), what about necks?
I'll probably get flamed for suggesting this, but I'm using an Ashdown ABM for my simple tone machine. It's lighter weight than some of the other suggestions here.
Valve drive on 12 o'clock, pre-shape on, eq off. Only gain and volume to worry about then. As far as I'm concerned Ashdown would do well to release an amp with gain, valve/clean blend and volume AND NOTHING ELSE. There are thousands of guys looking for a simple bass amp - that could be just the tool and surely more useful to them than these mythical 'little giants' we keep hearing about...
A great sounding head to be sure, but definitely no lightweight. -
Ooh. Cool. I never know when it comes out... I just keep popping into WH Smiths on the off chance. What are the main features?
Well this ludicrous top 40, interviews with Jack Bruce (again) Geddy Lee, Robbie Shakespear and some people I've not heard of before (not meant as a bad thing). An expensive (£1700 to £5000) 5 string shoot out (go recession, go). Aria SB, Hartke Vs Trace Elliot combos, Peavey BXP reviews. A list of "beginner" basses like the previous "rock" basses list (pretty pointless as no worthwhile comments are made again). Plus some other reviews of stuff. Like the last one, certainly not a stellar issue IMO, but they're not writing for me in particular I guess. I do wish they'd find some more new people to interview though, instead of the same olds time and again, it's not like there is a shortage of players out there. Still it's better than Bass Player mag any day! -
Is this the new edition of BGM? e.g. the one after the metal guitars feature?
Yes it is, just dropped through the letter box today -
but, calm down, it's only an exercise to fill up some magazine pages.
True, but I stand by my list of omissions. -

6. Ramble On - Led Zep
5. Money - Pink Floyd
4. Good Times - Chic
3. School Days - Stanley Clarke
2. Sex Machine - James Brown
1. Peaches - The Stranglers
Well I know that this is a British mag, but so are we and I say "What The ****"!!!!
My Generation? What about The Real Me or 5:15 where JE really lets rip.
All Right Now? Fair enough, but Mr Big has a better line throughout and a better solo, what about The Stealer?
No Steely Dan songs at all? Surely Peg rates at least top 20.
And given that there is a decidedly Brit flavour to the poll, where's Pino on '80s Paul Young, or Bruce Thomas on The Attractions? Poor show BGM, poor show -
Sold subject to the usual!

Bump for the weekend
tinnitus scares me i get it after gigs quite often, i should probably wear ear plugs but i never bother, so it's my own fault if i do get it permanently i guess
START WEARING EARPLUGS NOW! YES I AM SHOUTING.
Seriously any protection is better than none at all, don't wait until you have an irreversible condition like I did. I now wear them to stop it getting any worse. -
thanks guys! it's been upsetting me the last wee while.
ive been on antibiotics for nearly 2 weeks almost finished them its just the last 5 days have been really bad. Been struggling even watching tv! i know theres no real cure for it long term. my best mates date was in the Army and has had it since he was 17! and he's now 72! i dont know how he manages! Tinnitus and going deafg are some of my biggest fears! i dont know what i'd do without my ears!
thanks for the replies
It could also be the antibiotics that are causing the tinnitus, check the info sheet for side effects. Hope it goes soon. -
I have permanent tinnitus. I don't notice it during the day but can drive me nuts if I'm in a silent room or trying to hear something faint. Fortunately after a while you'll find that your brain will naturally filter out the background noise of tinnitus, eventually. Just try not to dwell on it and 'tune out' of the sound rather than concentrating on it.
Yep I've had it for about 14 years. In a quiet room you can concentrate hard and "turn it down" but it takes practice and doesn't always work. The worse thing for me is when I'm in the mountains with nobody and nothing around, total silence except the ringing in my ears. I miss silence.
Hopefully the OPs tinnitus will pass once the infection has gone. But going forward we should all wear good ear plugs. A custom set will set you back less than an expensive pedal. I wish I had been made more aware of these products before I got my tinnitus, damn that crash cymbal (I think it was probably that). -
Apparently owned by Bruce Thomas of The Attractions after his original Fiesta Red/Salmon Pink P was stolen. This was fitted with a retro fir anodised gold p/g, but I prefer tort on white.
I might be interested in buying the other 2 blueline drivers if you still have them?
These have been very popular, but they've all gone now I'm afraid. -
How quickly you looking to sell? As when I get a new bass I can probably scrap together the cash for this!
ASAP I have GAS -
Awesome cab, I have the same rig. Where were you a couple of months back when I was buying?
I've been baaaaaaad...

Ha! Been there with the budget and blown it out of the water too. Ooh that bass is naughty. Enjoy your badness.
