I even watched Geddy using his Jazz bass with Yes in 2017 and although its a good replication of Chris's tone it still has that warmer rounded tone that comes across every now and again.

You are in good company, Sir, as that's pretty much what Geddy has said in the past and why he uses Jazzes these days.

I watched that DVD last night (Live in Montreux). IMO it sounds nothing like his Ric.

And when he switches to the Ric on some songs, it kind-of hammers the point home

Not the footage I saw years ago, it was something on the Lakland website 'jukebox' long since removed. That Live in Montreux video tone is very smooth and un-Ric like; nice though (well it's Chris, of course it's nice).

That’s what I was thinking, blocks can look nice on a Tele but I think your right the dots suit it better.........😀

    Great minds, etc 😁.

Old Smoky puts me in mind of the Gibbo Marauder, but better looking.

  4. The dot maple neck didn’t work for me on the LP body, but those blocks just transform it in my eyes, it adds just the right amount of Gibson to make it work. Stick with the dots on the Tele for the same effect from a Fender perspective. IMHO of course.

Does "giving it some beans" mean that you are hitting the strings harder? If so, don't hit the strings that hard, or you could drop the height of the pickups.

    ^^^ This.

More recently I have been struggling to get a proper P bass sound with my Player Precision and almost ended up selling it. I bought a cheap Behringer compressor sustainer and it has completely transformed the sound to the familiar, almost slightly overdriven sound that I know and love from all of those old Queen albums. This cheap, plastic £17 pedal is absolutely incredible and have it switched on all of the time with both my Jazz and Precision.

This has had me looking at ‘grindy’ compressors (I used to use an EBS Multicomp, but haven’t had it for years) and I’m liking the sound of the Fairfield Accountant.

Guitar Guitar has a Lakland sale...I actually went in to buy one at the weekend and they said it was sold. Went home and it was still in stock but moved to another store. whizzed me off! There’s a lovely gloss walnut Legend around too. GAS confusion!

To be fair to GG, if someone in another store wants to try a bass from another part of the country, they have to put a deposit (fully refundable) down and this may have have contributed to the sold/not sold situation.

  8. I’ve been giving this a bit of thought and have come to the conclusion that the Hootenanny is a victim of all NYE programming. If you look beyond the musical entertainment broadcast, it’s all just a rehash of the various old codswallop that the broadcasters have been spewing out for years on NYE. It just so happens that this is a forum populated by musicians, so we are always  going to focus on the musical programming provided. Basically, we are all being shortchanged, whatever our entertainment preferences at this time of year. We deserve better, but in reality, it’s a real First World problem.

  9. Another vote for CleanmyMac. I’ve been using it for a few months now. Being able to maximise RAM as you go along (YouTube videos really eats up my RAM space) is a great feature. The scheduled full clean is reasonably quick to complete and I’m convinced makes a difference.

  10. A rather measly 12 (plus one cancellation due to band member medical issue). However, if I think of that as one a month, that doesn’t seem too bad in terms of stress levels (although the continual discussion regarding getting more gigs pushes those levels up). I already have 8 for this year, 3 this month, so 2020 might be more active.

  11. Having a quiver of basses to choose from is certainly a nice thing and allows one to choose the ‘right’ bass for whatever situation you find yourself in. However, there is also something to be said for just having one that you know inside and out and are able to get what you need out of it, having ‘your sound’ there every time. I have 4 basses and often flit from one to another trying to find the one I’m most comfortable with, which I find irritating, that and continually looking at other basses, wondering if there is something I’m missing out on.

Good luck with your quest, I hope you make a decision you feel comfortable with, whatever that decision is, don’t look back - there be dragons!

  12. My type is... continually changing between the 4 I own (a J, P and MM type, plus one other very different one). Of course I’m always looking outside those (damn you GAS), but I’m pretty sure I don’t ‘need’ anything else. Following on from a gig I did last Saturday and a couple of threads here on BC (I’m easily influenced) I’m currently thinking my MM style fretless is my type.
