1. Great video man! Watched it to the end, I was enjoying your groove so much. And a beautiful bass. All the best!!
2. That is stunning. I bet it feels and sounds as good as it looks! I have a SR5 already though.. Good luck with the sale!
3. Sold a hipshot tuner to Tony. He was super easy to deal with - friendly, efficient, good comms - a straightforward sale! Trade with confidence
4. My first bass (aged 18) was a fretless 5 string. Traded it back in at the shop a couple of years later for a better fretless 5 string (which I still have).. then a decade later, because frets were proving kind of useful, and my friend's 4 string Jazz was virtually on permanent loan (I was forever dropping the E to a D) I ended up buying a 6.. now sold in favour of a new SR5. So I've never actually owned a 4 string!! But I really enjoy playing them.. so at some point I'll need to get one. I think I need one to complete the family.....
5. Used Hipshot bass xtender type GB7 (sealed Gotoh) in gold. Retrofits existing tuner of this type without any new holes. Full working order. Light use only and in good condition except for some scratching to the retaining nut which you can hopefully see in the photos. Only noticeable if you look closely. Also the little adjustment screw has lost its shine but the gold finish over the rest of the tuner is perfect. Used to have this on a Yamaha bass that I eventually sold, so it's sitting unused. These are worth over 100 quid new - for 45 I'll include UK postage.
6. I too would suggest keeping the Sandberg.. However if you are intent on trading down to something much cheaper then don't overlook Squire. My daughter wanted to take up bass so I was after a new instrument of decent quailty but without spending over the odds. We got the Squire Affinity PJ and I was very impressed with the finishing of the neck and the playability - for a £200 bass anyway - and the set up was good right out the box. The quality of budget instruments has really increased since I learned over 20 years ago! Although I can only really vouch for the one we got; we didn't try many other Squires/alternatives. All that said... If you keep on with the bass you may later regret parting with the Sandberg..?
7. My new Stingray 5. Custom pickguard by Jack's Instrument Services in Manchester. It's quite a unique beast!
8.
Finally my lovely Sterling. I've owned this bass twice and it has 'done the rounds' with quite a few of the BC community a few years back. She became known as 'Rita'. One piece body and matching headstock. I fitted a Nordstrand pickup the 1st time I owned it and I notice that there is no Nordy motif on it now. Maybe there never was? Did someone swap the Nordy out? (they are rare beasts nowadays, special order only). It still has a huge tone anyway which makes me think it's still the Nordstrand. I also have the pearloid white scratch plate in case anyone is offended. I'm not sure where the original white one went. It lost it's original case along the way too but I replaced it with a new one. Sadly it sits in it's case as I I'm used to 5's now. It's still not for sale though for sentimental reasons
Oh yes, that is superb! Now I really must post pics of my new Stingray 5 - also with custom pickguard........ Off to take some photos I think...
9. I took delivery of a new SR5, American made, about 6 weeks ago. I can't fault it, the build quality is top class. And EB are well known for their necks - a reputation that is justified, based on the ones I've played. Couldn't be happier with mine. I went for the maple fretboard - which is sliced off the same block as the neck then perfectly matched up again after the truss rod is inserted. You have to look very hard to find the join...
10.
Very impressive! Did it have a buttery biscuit base?
That is the funniest YouTube video I've seen this year. Literally laughed out loud. There's definitely a marketing opportunity there.. "New addition to our spring range - The Buttery Biscuit Bass" - but which manufacturer would be most likely to make it?
11.
Wonder if the real Stingray will have a "40" on the side?
Hopefully not! But I see they are doing a 30th anniversary model at the moment - so maybe in 10 years' time..?
12. Thanks everyone for the kind comments and birthday wishes! Yes - I have wonderful friends. I understand it took many hours to make. But it tasted as good as it looks! All the best to those of you who will be turning the same corner very soon Drop hints now about bass cakes!
13. So I had a big birthday a couple of weeks ago. Just getting round to posting the pics of the cake my friends made for me. Unfortunately the real thing didn't arrive from Music Man in time.. but I should be seeing it in a few weeks. It probably won't taste as good as this one. 14. Mine was originally fretted when it was in the shop. I was looking for a fretless, but loved this bass, so I had it defretted by the guitar tech at the shop. He did a great job. You can see the lines where he inlaid wood in place of the frets but you have to look closely. It's the best of both worlds: I get the benefit of lines when I need them but it looks unlined and cool to everyone else! Funnily enough, I check visually more than I used to (I've been playing for over 20 years).. In the early days I used to be really confident and just go for it - till I saw a video of me playing and cringed at the intonation of some of the notes. I got more careful! Not sure whether I'd get lined or unlined if buying a new fretless. I too listened to Scott's video with interest; I take his point. But the unlined somehow seems more "right"... Glad I'm not in this dilemma (at the moment! )
15. Held pending arrangements with a buyer...
16.
Great grain on this one...
Yes the grain is nice - and the finish is in good condition. They did a lovely range of translucent finishes with these original TRB basses. I've seen a few others sell online and they're all great looking instruments.
17. Great sounding and great playing 6 string. A lot of bass for the money!
18. Very versatile bass, punchy and articulate, with twin humbuckers (alnico) and active 3 band EQ giving lots of possibilities. Ash body, maple neck with rosewood fretboard, 35 inch scale, 24 frets, gold plated tuners. Translucent amber with matching headstock. 18mm string spacing which is pretty good for a 6 string - wide neck (it has two truss rods!) Range of just over 4 octaves. Plays great. These TRB basses were made in Japan - this being the mkII version which features a much cleaner and improved preamp (I know, I also own a first series 5 string!) Dates from the very late 90's/turn of the millennium. The condition is excellent with no major dings, cracks or buckle rash. Some minor marks and player wear are to be expected, but it has not been heavily gigged and it's been well cared for. Happy to supply extra photos or answer any questions. Full spec from Yamaha website: http://usa.yamaha.co...6ii/?mode=model Strung with a new set of EB Slinkys for the sale, set up and ready to go. Gig bag included. Sorry, no trades as I need the cash for a new bass I have on order. I really don't want to post this bass if it can be avoided - would prefer to meet in person if possible - but if it must be posted it'll be at actual cost to the buyer, and only within the UK. 19.
I don't see the point. It's like buying a mediocre priced car then ran sand paper and wire brush through it and knock the bonnet and wheels here and there!
This made me laugh out loud! Well said!
20. Staff member in Guitarguitar recently held up a roadworn bass and I said "oh is that secondhand"... "No it's new.." (short pause and puzzled look from me until my brain cells caught up with the situation). Personally, it's not for me - at all. It seems fake somehow. And I know there are some on the market that are marked in exactly the same way as some famous player's bass. Be yourself I say! However, very much my opinion and I can see why others may like these basses. I don't judge anyone for buying them. Each to their own!
21. I've had the TRB5 for 20 years - very versatile and punchy even without frets! - and I would agree with others who favour an active bass for a 5 string. Brings out the low notes better - a more even and controlled response across the range, to my ears at least. 19mm string spacing. Stingray 5 on order - I'll reserve judgement on that just now, but I've loved every SR I've tried. Sure the tone is an acquired taste, but you owe it to yourself to try one. Also tried a couple of Lakland 5 strings in Guitarguitar recently and was pleasantly surprised - very playable neck and the build quality even on the Skylines I thought was really good for the price. If the SR5 works for me then my next purchase might have to be a DJ4, passive.
22. Thanks for the welcome everyone. Yes, Edinburgh is a beautiful city with lots to explore.. including a few really good music shops (both a blessing and a curse haha!!)
23. Been playing bass on and off for 22 years after picking it up at 17 (big birthday this year) Used to play a lot more till family came along - and have been playing a lot of keys since then - but getting back into the bass now. Also teaching my daughter at the moment Have a couple of Yamaha basses - a fretless 5, and a fretted 6 - both awesome beasts.. Planning to sell the 6 string any time now to fund a new Music Man purchase.. but the fretless will be mine forever! My aim in life is to one day own a 4 string. Stay near Edinburgh - good to see lots of other Scottish bassists on here.. I've been lurking for a while but have finally decided to join the fold! Looking forward to sharing in the wit and wisdom... David
