1. This looks nice. But as nice as it is, I think it's going to struggle to achieve £270. http://cgi.ebay.co.u...atchlink:top:en EDIT: The seller got £250 for it as a 'best offer'.
2. The Harley HB2005 bass looks OK, but I find the angled pickups look a bit odd. And, I think an earlier version of this one had even more impressive body wood grain. But, it's £177, and you can't expect everything for that much. I'm not sure that I know of a bass with a spalted top (or even veneer) that goes for £300 or less. Are there any? The first I thought of was the LTD B204. But I couldn't find them new for less than £325.
3. The musical performances were often good. But I disliked the whole Hollywood thing. The shots of the audience, the interviews, and announcements. The Concert for George was much superior, IMHO.
4. I have read that occasionally there are quality control fails in Vintage (brand) instruments. Every Vintage instrument I've ever played has been good. That's not a huge range, and it's more six strings than basses. But, I have read poor reviews of individual instruments. I haven't read any bad reviews of the V1005 (which I think that one is) and it looks really nice. But, I thought I should mention that I have seen a sprinkling of poor reviews of the brand's instruments in general. BTW: I think that's a very good price if it includes that lovely looking case. Even the V1004 will typically go for quite a bit more than that. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VINTAGE-V1004DX-TRU-NECK-BASS-GUITAR-IN-MINT-CONDITION-/121322905371?pt=UK_Musical_Instruments_Guitars_CV&hash=item1c3f689f1b (albeit this is the spalted model)
5. I did bid on a BC310 a few months ago, and came second. It sold for £115. I thought I was lowballing it and was very surprised at what it went for. When I build up £££ of 'man toy' budget for a fretless (currently £-30 (negative) budget available ), perhaps I should be looking at a Bass Collection fretless in my list of potential instruments. I wonder if anyone will be bringing a Bass Collection to the midlands bass bash.
6. Hi HowieBass. Have you posted a full review of your Curbow?
7. There are certainly enough people out there claiming that the Tanglewood Curbow basses were made of luthite. I looked into it further. It seems that the first Cort built curbows in the country were branded Tanglewood, and were luthite. After Cort started selling Curbows under its own name, Tanglewood introduced the Canyon series bass, which looked similar but were made of wood, not luthite. There are lots of owners of the Tanglewood Curbows describing the body as luthite. Are they wrong?
8. Just been looking at pictures of a Washburn Taurus T24 natural. Looks really great to me. It got me thinking, are there other basses under, say, £300 new, that look really great.
9.
You're new here, aren't you..?
I think it's the standard basschat member progression. We start off talking on topic and being reasonable. We proceed to going way off topic even from post two in a thread and lose all claim to reasonbleness. Then we get to stage three where we still go immediately way off topic and have no claim to reasonableness, but believe that we are staying on topic and being reasonable. @artisan - you own something called an "Innovation Golden Slap"???? Off to google that. Edit: Oh, they're strings.
10. Unbelievable it may be, but I wasn't previously familiar with the Sei Flamboyant range. Is it fiddly to tune, with the six tuners in a row like that? From what I've heard of Sei in general, I thought that they were a top class range of basses, and hence I'd expect that even if it looks fiddly to tune, it would in fact be a delight. Wasn't there someone somewhere on the forum upset because they couldn't afford a seven string Sei at that time on sale in one of the notable bass stores in London? @TheGreek - totally off topic, but it's interesting to see all your very high end basses, and a Bass Collection BC310 in there. How does it compare?
11.
Agreed... The missus is already suspicious about Basschat thanks to the 'porn' threads and threads that induce GAS. I don't need 'XXX' searches in the mix too!!
But, returning to the topic, any agreed and half-way sensible format would do.
12. The headstock and pickups of the Overwater and the vintage are quite similar. It's probably just coincidence due to there being quite a few basses of that particular shape. The most distinctive feature common to the Vintage and the Overwater are the pickups, being a single coil jazz style and humbucker. There's a Shine bass that has that combination, and I'm sure if we go through every bass in the world, so do a fair number of others. But, there are many more common pickup combinations than that. Given that the Overwater basses were designed from scratch, including all hardware, I'm wondering why they didn't make them look more distinctive from the competition. And perhaps to design them to look a little more 'boutique', as some Spear or Alden basses are. E.g. People often criticise the bass market as being too conservative, and that explains all the cookie cutter Fender clones. But for a venture like the Tanglewaters, how does designing instruments that look quite reminiscent of other mid-priced instruments work as a selling strategy.
13.
Interesting thread in that if the shoe was on the other foot, i.e. a guitarist "suggesting" to a bassist what or how he should play (regardless of whether the "suggestion" was warrented or not) lots of people would be up in arms with things like..."tell him where to stuff his suggestion.." and phrases to that effect.
Surely the situations are very different depending on what the suggestion is. If the suggestion is a constructive suggestion which if followed would make the suggestee a better player with a greater ability to express themselves artistically, then the suggestee would be sensible and mature to accept it in good grace and thank the suggester. if the suggestion is "just play root notes" or "play the [substandard] bass line exactly as I wrote it", then that's an entirely different matter.
14. If we had a general agreement that people put the price range in their posts, then we could sort by price already. E.g. someone selling a Squier Affinity p-bass for £510 could put "£5XX" in the body of their post. Anyone wanting to search for basses in the £500-600 range could do a basses for sale search on £5XX. We could make the ranges include thousands, e.g. £1XXX £2XXX. If the seller of the Squier Affinity p-bass dropped their price to £250, then they'd edit their post to include £2XX instead of £5XX. On dropping it to £50, they'd edit the search term to be £XX. If these key terms were decided by the moderation team for basses for sale, and mentioned in the advice for listings, then a number of sellers (most? all?) would use them, and simple searches would show up basses in a buyer's intended price range. And there would be no rewriting of the website software needed at all.
15. Overwater Vintage Enough differences to show that they definitely aren't anything like the same bass. E.g. isn't the Overwater a bolt on bass, while the Vintage is neck through (under the veneer)? Diamond shaped knob pattern, but pointed differently. Similar, but not the same body and headstock shape. But, there seem to be quite a few design touches that seem to suggest some inspiration or shared design DNA in there. Or is it just random chance?
16. Are there any audible examples of MP basses with active preamps? Also, is this a realistic depiction of the sound of the MPJ? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SnYbQMyF6I8
17. I tried a Rockbass one of these. I thought it was the best sounding acoustic bass I'd tried. But, I didn't like the way it played at all. Medium high (if not high) action, and fret buzz everywhere. It may have been a single bad example, but there is no way that I would buy a bass like that.
18.
Another one of those Black Eagle basses. Seems that the neck is fecked on this one? http://www.ebay.co.u...t-/191157087499
At least the seller hasn't put a £500 starting bid on it. It's well worth it's current bid of £1.24, if even only for the pickguard. Given that Antorias are pretty well identical to their matching Ibanezes, and the branding is on the neck, there might be some quite useful spare parts on it. Edit: He clearly parts out guitars (and presumably basses) and has many bits of a Westone Thunder 1 guitar parted out. He got £59 (albeit including postage) for a Westone Guitar Neck. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Vintage-1983-Matsumoku-Japan-Westone-Thunder-1-Neck-Guitar-Project-Parts-NICE-/191155440725?pt=UK_Guitar_Accessories&hash=item2c81c08c55 That seems quite a bit, and if he sells many more bits of it for the prices he's asking, is going to make quite a bit more for it than the guitar would make as a single item.
19. I'm guessing with it being a six string headless, that a humongous horn helps with balance. But it is very visually impressive as well
20. http://www.ebay.co.u...=item51bcf089dc
21. I have no basses that look anything remotely like a Fender. However, I recently played a VMJ fretless for the first time. I've no budget to buy anything right now, but I am feeling a strong pull towards the Fender derivative side.
22. Tina Weymouth Sara Lee Michie Nakatani Suzi Quatro Sharon Finn Gail Ann Dorsey Kathy Valentine Carol Kaye Zia McCabe Tracy Wormwood In no particular order.
23.
Bill MacCormick was the bass player in 801...
That's my memory all over! He did a great job, and now that you've prodded my memory, I prefer MacCormick's playing (and singing) on albums such as K-Scope to John Wetton's work on the Wetton/Manzanera album.
24. I'm not going to comment on the rights and wrongs here. But, I met Jon Letts when he was starting off in the business as previously he worked for the same employer as me. And, I feel very sad that things have reached their current state.
