I am suddenly interested in fretless basses, and how easy they are to play.

    I want to:

Experience lined v unlined; understand the difference in fretboard materials; contemplate mwah v no mwah.

Is anyone bringing a fretless bass to the Bass Bash, that they can demonstrate to me?

    Thanks in advance.

    Decisions - what to bring...

My old band recorded a demo of some of the covers in our set as a marketing tool for getting gigs. Two of the tracks were recorded with my old 4003s. Listening to the rough mix, straight after the session, the Ric sounded great, really growly, definitely a Ric. However, when it was mastered and the final product was delivered, all that Ric-ness had disappeared, just a generic bass tone. OK, it was probably more like the tone of the original tracks, but all the character that I liked was gone :( . The guy who recorded, engineered and mastered it - a bass player!

I was in a band a while back and the sound folks did a recording and proudly presented it; they'd completely killed the Ric tone, so I told them I never wanted to hear it again (I never did).

I’ve never been to a bass bash but would love to attend, if I can. We’ve got a handful of a lovely 10 month old so I wouldn’t be there for the whole day. Do other folk stick around for just a couple of hours?

If I came I’d be bringing my rather unexotic duo of MIM P bass and Silverburst Sterling Ray 34. I don’t have an amp, only a Nux preamp.

If you can make it do!

Imagine going to such lengths to make your Rickenbacker not look like a Rickenbacker - and then going "oh, sod it" & slapping the original ugly afterthought scratchplate back on it completely unmodified, not even bothering to trim it so it doesn't hang off the bottom edge of your svelte new Pointybacker.

The other end of the pickguard has been hacked...

I always look for the 'weasel words'.

When a guitar dealer says "the rest of the parts appear original" [my emphasis] then I know I'm being lied to.

Well - the strap buttons don't appear to be original.

Stuck a bezel on earlier but didn’t notice the wheels on the saddles move when removing the strings but did notice there’s only one wrap around the E string tuner shaft….always thought at least 2….mind you the shafts look rather wee

You do poke the end of the string down the shaft and bend it at a right angle, so there is a little more strength there.

Was never a huge fan of Ricks, the dual-truss rod, the quite frankly hopeless bridge and just the look of them (despite Lemmy playing one) until I saw this video. I love Eddie & The Hot Rods and this is one of their most underrated tracks ...

    Well - there's a  thing.

    And here's another thing...

Oh wow, what finishes are the 8 that you have??  Photos? :)

I've definitely looked around for some others... sadly, my GAS acts up most when something is particularly rare and/or difficult to find (e.g., I'm sure I could do with a nice late 70's early 80's Burgundy-Glo 4001... or a Noir with an ebony fretboard).  :)

This was my selection a while back.

The one on the end is a 5-string I bought from @6feet7, but I didn't quite gel with it and sold it back to him a year later when he had seller's remorse. I've now got another jetglo ('88) instead which I bought from some Guy.

I may pick up one or two more if/when the right ones pop up...

I've just bought a beautiful red 4004 Laredo and converted it to a 5 stringer. It's so much lighter and more comfortable than the 4003 and just as cool looking :)

I'm looking forward to having a go on that at the Bass Bash!

I couldn't bring myself to part with the eight or ninety quid they want for one of those splitter boxes, so I built one for about ten quid in parts (aluminium pedal case and three decent quality jack sockets).

    My "Hack-O-Sound" box...

So if that’s ‘Rick-O-Sound’, does that mean the Shaftesbury copies have ‘Shaft-O-Sound? And the Hondo copies have ‘Hond-O-Sound’?

Either way if had a spare three grand I wouldn’t say no to a Rickenbacker 3000 bass. They’re like the Rickenbacker bass equivalent of a Fender Telecaster or something. Quirky but I like them.

The Japanese ones were labelled "Stereo-Sound"!

  11. Thanks, but I'll stick to my 4003s.

There also seems to be some sign of separation between the neck-thru and wings; curiously it's at the tail-end and I'm wondering if the extra screws in the tailpiece have been badly drilled and gone into the join to cause it.

(I think Ric did do them for a while.)
