1. You could always get something like this made, there are lots that will.
2. See http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=128
3. Here is my custom take on the P bass. I love it.
4. When I started playing the shop I used did not have a bass player on the staff so I used to try everything out for them, even using basses for gigs. This was late 70's/Early 80's. I have to say that the fenders were universally pants and a lot of the musicman basses were nearly as bad (this was after Leo sold it to do G&L). The best basses in the shop were Ibanez (think Musician) by a country mile - thats why I bought them. They even had a Wal Pro II with a bent neck!
5.
Another thought -- it would be interesting to compare this bass with Mike's Shuker (see Build Diary nearby) when they both arrive. They're both transparent blue with matching headstock, flame maple top, birdseye board and Nordstrands. Maybe we can stage some sort of Anglo American heavyweight custom title bout. And in the blue corner ... and in the other blue corner ... I'll get my people to have a word with Mike's people. Cheers Mark
And in the black corner we can have my GB's.
6. Robert Palmer - Pressure Drop Bass by some bloke called Kenny Gradney and some bloke called James Jamerson.
7. You want to hear a p bass in action. Anything by James Jamerson. All Who albums before Quadrophenia (Tommy, Who's Next, most played with Frankenstien). All the classic Stax/Atlantic stuff played by the Duckster (Sam and Dave, Otis, Arethea etc) Enough to get you started.
8.
thank you to everyone.....somebody knows where i can listen some sample about flatwound string on bass guitar? or some musician that's sure use this kind of strings??? Thanks!
Anything played by James Jamerson!
9. James Jamerson Thunder Fingers Andy Fraser - still only a teenager when Free recorded All Right Now and Mr Big Jimmy Blanton - as everyone else is chosing guys I've never heard of Bruce Foxton
10. The most famous exponent of bi-amping was the Ox. He started off using Marshall and Hiwatt valve amps with one set having the bass turned up full and another set with the treble turned up full. The full history of the Ox's search for sonic nirvana via bi and even tri amping should be available on the internet somewhere on a Who website. Ashdown used to make a range of cabs with horn loaded bass cabs for John. I tried it myself with two Peavey bass combo's which had built in crossovers but it did not work very well. There always used to be Peavy pre-amps with built in crossovers but I've not looked recently.
11. Looks like a quality instrument. Looks can be deceiving mind. The headstock veneer and what looks like an inlaid name does not look cheap.
12. I was lucky to be there the last time the Who played in Swansea. If the Ox had been there they would never have got away with only tripping the power three times.
13. This legislation is cause for concern. It was in the news this week with the last night of the proms being too loud with all those people singing Land Of Hope And Glory. It could see the return of the dreaded volume cut outs! For the younger members these were very popular at lots of venues and had an orange light that came on if the volume was too loud and the power cut out if the light stayed on for too long. At some venues a rimshot on the drums was enough to cut the power and I cut the power at one venue tuning up with harmonics.
14. Ian has got a GB Spitfire 4 that he is looking to trade for a 5.
15. Intonation is checked by comparing the fretted note to the harmonic and if the intonation is out then it will affect the fretted note not the harmonic.
16. Oops - didn't realise the fuss caused by a throwaway remark. Apologies all round and post deleted. Shame about all the quotes though.
17. Well I have 2 almost identical basses, one top loaded and one strung through. Can't say I've noticed any difference.
18. Those jazz basses look interesting. Ian is selling a GB Spitfire for £800 and FunkMonky an Overwater Jazz for a grand.
19.
Heh, I must have repressed that. I know him for his fingerstyle funk. - He's one of the best in my opinion as well. "Bootsy is one of the kings of funk. His approach is minimal, not flashy, but he knows how to add just the right emphasis to make people move." -Wheat on Bootsy's playing with James Brown on the JB CD.
Obviously a quote from before Bootsy discovered "space bass"
20. I've got a KSD. Its not embarrassed keeping company with 2 GB's.
21.
Mesmerising......... Great technique!

just remember why I liked that video... the black tops went translucent with the strong lights...
Ah, the late great Robert Palmer. Been listening to Pressure Drop with none other than James Jamerson on bass.
22. Dont get me wrong - it looks like a nice bass its just not worth loads of money in a fickle world. How do you not get on with through necks? I used a through neck Ibanez Musician for years along with various bolt on's and never really thought about it.
23. Dont know what you have been watching or listening to, but I have not noticed much of a slap comeback. But then footless tights are back in fashion so who knows................
