Nice to see you back Beedster. P basses rule. Just curious - Did you buy that green CS Precision that was being flogged on ebay a while ago ( and still is I think for £2900 gasp )

Funny old world, eh?[/quote] Yes, interesting When you consider that the general wisdom is that a neck through bass has better sustain and fewer dead spots because there are no interruptions in the vibration pathway, I just don't understand the reasoning behind placing a big lump of metal between the strings and the body.

You would have to replace the nut though, but that's a fairly simple job.

So.......Plan B? I would suggest having a look on Bill Fitzmaurice's site first. If youre intent on building your own then that would be a good place to start. The first thing you're gonna need is a proper design. It'll make your life a whole lot easier.

THe only reason I would be interested is so I can avoid the tuneless sh*te they play.

Whereabouts are you based Leeroy?. It would really help if we knew that. I'm curious why you have chosen an Italian based dealer. I've just been having a look on their site and it's Seventies Fender Heaven if you're into those things. They're beautiful looking basses but the prices are absolute lunacy. I Suppose those are normal for Italy. Also the quality of Fender basses and guitars really went down the toilet in the 1970s so unless you really know what you're looking at I wouldn't touch it with a bargepole I think your plan to get a cheapy first is a good idea. There are some amazingly good cheap basses around now. If you like the seventies look then Fender Squier do some excellent re-issues which would probably be much better basses than a badly relicked 1970s woofer. Fender produced that pale blue colour on their USA standard basses a few years ago. I had a Precision in that colour, but I haven't seen one since so I guess they didn't sell that well. Try Googling it though, you may be lucky

Hi Andrew. Welcome to BC

I went to an open mike night the other day in an average sized pub. Three performances were by what you could call bands, one of which had a very loud drummer and an enthusiastic guitar player as well as a keyboard player. The supplied bass backline was a Laney RB3 (65 watts I think) and it coped very well. It didn't shake the room but all the bass players were clearly audible with some bottom end. It did have the effect of making of making 4 different bassists playing a Warwick, a Precision and an Ibanez something or other, all sound the same though so it wasn't "all in the fingers" that night.

Thanks[/quote] OTOH the stock Jap bridges are particularly cheap and cheerful IIRC. You could do a lot worse than putting a US standard bridge on there. Fender have been gradually improving them over the years and the new HMV bridge is an excellent piece of kit. You could probably pick one up cheap from someone who's uprading to a badass

I think it totally ruins the classic look of the bass. I've always found the stock Fender bridge to be perfectly adequate and it does exactly what it's supposed to do.

I'd like to recommend Nevada in Portsmouth. [url="http://www.nevadamusic.co.uk/"]http://www.nevadamusic.co.uk/[/url] I've been going in there for 25 years and I've always found the staff to have a very good attitude. Range - 7 - They are not a dedicated bass shop so they have a bit of everything, guitars, keyboards, drums etc., but they usually have a big selection of low to mid priced basses and a few top end Fenders, Musicmans and the odd Ric. Price - 9 - Their prices seem to be competitive with most other shops. The online prices are similar to GAKs online prices. Service - 10 - Excellent. Always helpful, enthusiastic and friendly. Some of the younger staff can be a bit clueless about bass but there is usually a bass guy around if you ask. I've never been pressurised or hassled in any way. They are always willing to let you try stuff out and they have two demo rooms where you can sit and noodle in private. Since they have relocated to an industrial estate outside of the town there is always loads of parking.

Very nice. I'm seriously considering having this mod done to mine. I owned a hot rodded P and like an idiot I sold it to fund something else which I then subsequently sold, doh!! I don't understand why Fender discontinued the Hot-rodded range either. As you say it's a very popular mod and I would certainly buy one in a flash. They come up for trade very occasionally in the for sale section here and sell almost straight away. I've only ever seen a couple and I missed them both. Double doh!!

The pickups are DiMarzio and he says the chrome hardware is re-issue. Not sure if he just means the covers though. Its also got an extra switch fitted so the electrics could be butchered. It's a beautiful looking bass though. I'm not normally a sucker for old basses but that one's got something that just rattles my cage.
