A friend of mine just picked up a Markbass combo (2x10 wedge thingy IIRC) and was mightily impressed. He paid around £700 for an ex-demo one He used to use a big rig (1x18 and 4x10) and that's now redundant

How long do you dwell on a practise exercise?
TBH I don't think I've ever practised a scale in my life. Practice for me means working out basslines for new songs (by listening to the original recording for covers or by working out the line I can hear in my head for originals) and making sure that I can still play all the other songs in the set from memory. If there's something new that I don't have the dexterity to play yet I find the best way is 10-15 minutes every day for a week or so generally gets my fingers doing the right thing.
+1 on this When i started playing covers i found the best way to improve was to simply learn everything by ear. I enjoyed working out fingering positions and progressions for myself, after a while you get in that zone where you can pick things up really quickly and you know what's coming next. Of course it helps if you're digging the music you're learning. Having that hunger to play really top tunes and basslines is a great incentive to play to your best and enjoy it. We started doing some really good songs this year and for the first time in ages a band practice was something i really looked forward to, mainly cos i got to bust out "Sir Duke" and "Under Pressure"! -
I've offered him £78 for it which i think is a reasonable price He's not got back to me yet though.......

Postage is reasonable too

Here's the garb on the Wizard website about the Hammers: "Struggling to get that dark crunchy tone you've always wanted? Lacking that oomph to get you over the line? Look no further, Hammers are loud dark and dirty, yet retain conventional construction - handwound, Alnico 5 magnets and attention to detail." I remember looking at them but thinking they wouldn't be suitable for my fretless "Loud, dark and dirty" - sounds like they'll do the job!
-
JoeGarcia had a set of Wizard Hammers, i think they're hotter than the 64s http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...4&hl=wizard Btw, if you're selling the Wizard 64s how much would you want for them? I was looking at Joe Garcia's but would have preferred the 64s for my fretless

Are you going for the "poshest punk of the year" award?
-
I bought some and put them on my Zoot, didn't like them too much tbh but for the price they were worth it, quite a lot of folk really like em so horses for courses i guess

Another one for the Korgs, i currently use the DT-10 and it's very accurate and responsive. If i was looking at buying a new one i'd look at the Pitchblack but there's nowt up with mine! The old Sabine one i had was good and pretty well built, stood up to a lot of abuse and was always accurate. Some scumbag hotel staff nicked it at a wedding gig hence the Korg, otherwise i'd still be using it today

Cheers Pete!
You're spoilt for choice, basically. But avoid super-budget names like Vintage, Harley Benton, Stagg, etc. I don't know where they're building those but they aren't pleasant to play.
I've played a few really nice Vintage basses and there was a killer Stagg Jazz in my local Crack Converters, the headstock logo is horrible though! Probably the exception rather than the rule but those brands do produce some good P and J variants. Similarly the Aria basses are generally well built and good players Regarding a good 1st bass for under £300 i'd go with what everyone says and look at the Squier CV series, also have a good look at the market section on here as there's some silly-good bargains pretty much every day!
The good guitarists don't do it
Very true! An old guitarist of ours thought it was the done thing to crank a Marshall up as loud as it would go, even though his playing was terrible and he had the mushiest guitar tone i've ever heard We sacked him for a multitude of reasons, but they were all summarised by one thing - p1ss-poor guitarist!

I'll have it please!

I bet this rig sounds huuuuuuuuuge!

A mate of mine has one of the older passive Stingrays strung with flats, the darkest bass i've heard! I depped for him once and couldn't get anything approaching treble out of it
