1.
Fast fret never used to be a fingerboard preparation, it was something you wiped onto the strings when they were on the bass to clean them & make them sqeak less - have they changed it?
Probably not, I'm just dumb as a bag of hammers. I should order some lemon oil.
2. I suppose as I've recently bought/ordered a few versatile basses I've noticed a certain resistance from certain members to this kind of bass, so I thought I'd explain my personal reasoning behind it. First of all I'd like to say I totally get the "I only use Precisions" or "I only use Stingrays" thing. You pick up a bass and you know how it'll respond to your hands, and what tone will come out, only differences being the quality of tone and neck. And maybe you're at that point in your journey where you've found your "promised land". But I'm not there and, in fact, I'm not convinced there even is a "promised land" bass to me. So let's take the good old P bass. P Basses are great. I always try and aim for having a P style sound available on any bass I own. To me P basses are like sausages. I love sausages, and there are herby sausages, spicy sausages, crazy out there sausages and just... Sausages are ace, ok? But sometimes I don't want to eat sausages, sometimes I want a steak dinner and that's where the stingray style sound comes in, a good, deep, satisfying steak dinner with all the trimmings. But occasionally I feel like a dessert, a sweet treat like a jazz bridge pickup. So, putting the food analogy aside, I like a lot of music, and I play a lot of different stles of music, sometimes at the same gig, or sometimes in a recording session and different basses suit different styles. For example I love that old P bass sound but I wouldn't use that if I was recording technical death metal and neither would I use an active stingray sound for some rootsy rock. "Yeah, but.." I hear you say... "you could just take x basses with you". Yeah, well I don't want to have to do any of the following 1) take WAAAY more gear with me 2) slow up the rest of the band by switching basses 3) end up with an out of tune string because I forgot to tune the D on basss #4 No, I'd rather flick a switch, turn a knob and I'm ready to go on the bass that's already round my neck. So there you go... It's not for everyone, but it's totally for me.
3. As to the whole wal thing... please explain to me how this: Looks like this: [sharedmedia=core:attachments:215020] Things I see that are similar... The headstock... Four knobs.... er.... Seriously, Wal horns are nearly like an SG. Enfield horns are probably the furthest away horns I've seen this side of a singlecut.
4. Hi guys, I got an ebony board fretless last week and it came with rounds on it. The board is already a little marked, so, as I was planning to put a set of XL Chromes on anyway I'm going to oil the board. Now, I already have a bottle of fast fret here, so the question is this, as I've never used oil on a board before. How much do you use? Is it just a bit on a cloth? A lot? Is there a particular best practice for this?
5.
Nice. I do like these, especially the fretted versions. But at over 4k for the top of the range models, I think all I'll be doing is liking.
Like I say, this one was less than 2k and still sounds and plays like it's worth a lot more. I can see myself picking up a fretted version for sure, but not this year.
6.
I have a various apps on my phone to practice note location, ear training and music reading, which I use daily on the tube.
Which apps? They sound like a good shout.
Practice reading.
Also a good shout.
7. Although if money was no object next fretless I'd buy would be the remington steele from Le Fay.
8. Overwater or Fodera, ACG too. I love my fretless Enfield too, you could get them to make you one.
9. I can understand this. Having previously lived between Manchester and Liverpool, and then Leeds (where there's a college of music) I've moved down to Cambridgeshire to find a comparative dearth of pretty much anything musical. Thankfully I already know a couple of people to do sudio stuff with but it would be nice to be in a gigging band again.
10. If, like me, you work for a living then I'm sure there's times when you wish you had a bass to practise with, whether it be at lunch, on the bus or even in a 2 hour meeting you know will not affect you or need your input but you've been dragged into anyway. So, what techniques do you use to practise in these situations? All I've currently managed is some right hand stuff like finger plucking on my right knee or slap patterns. Does anyone else run into this, and if so, what do you do?
11. I'll be there next year. No doubt about it.
12. Lol. Way to necro a nearly 9 year old thread
13. Holy crap! Text from FedEx saying expected delivery on Thursday morning.
14. It's a mini festival and it goes on till about 2:30am, but last band is on at midnight,
15.
oh christ me too... I'm happily in bed by 9.30 most nights.
Same. And I have a midnight headliner on Sunday.... Balls.
16.
To be honest I would have thought soiling yourself was probably a sign to start thinking about giving it up...
There have been times when "you're headlining, you're on at midnight!" has made me inwardly tut as I'd like to be in my bed by then.
17.
The ad went on to say "Age not important, but commitment essential" "our age range is between 22 and 23 and a half"
That's like.. the thinnest range ever. Hahahaha!!! What a bunch of dongs.
18. Also us oldies aren't going to flop around like a dead fish as soon as someone from a label says, "you guys are good". Yeah mate, heard it before. Also we tend to have better jobs and families that we don't want to just drop to do a tour where you sleep in a van which will make no money and play to empty venues. So ok... I get that part.
19.
have never played anything more expensive than a US Fender. Never felt the need to, either, there is simply nothing I would want to improve.
I'd advise not doing so, otherwise you'll go "HOLY CRAP THERE'S THIS WHOLE OTHER LEVEL HERE" and get lost down the rabbit hole like a lot of us.
20. Yeah, I'm hoping my recent purchases will have put a massive crack in the road... At least a 20mph speed limit.
21. Ageism is still very real in music, whereas other artforms it isn't. At 60 you're not "past it" to be a painter or "past it" to be a writer. But you know... a lot of the time it's all going back to the idea that band members should make the contents of people's pants feel funny. It was a lot better when ugly people were allowed in bands.
22. You can always BE happier though. I was happy with my musicman copy for 15 years. Then I tried something else and realized there was better out there. So improvements don't stop when you're happy, it's just you've decided not to go any further down that road.
23. I think, from what I hear, about 17 people.
