I've recently joined a nascent pub covers band doing pop, soft rock, soul, funk. One song suggestion is to do Blinding lights by The Weekend in reggae style. I didn't know the song, but quickly discovered the original is an electro-pop number released in 2019, topping American charts for many weeks. Here's a reggae version:

I rather like that reggae version and would look forward to giving it a go. However, I'm wondering how well it would be received down at the Dog and Duck, given that it's pretty different from the original. Would it confuse an audience, do you think? Better to leave well alone, do you think?

I think it's OK for the opening set but I think as always it will depend on the delivery.

Wow, that's a huge spread of music you don't like!

I think I have a very broad taste in music but it is about the way we listen to the radio I suppose. I often just need something 'easier' on the ear or familiar...

  3. Love 6 Music as an idea but the music is just so unlistenable to me most of the time I rarely listen to it with the exception of Radcliffe and Maconie who I have on nearly every weekend morning.

  4. I enjoyed the video, nice straightforward review.

I love my Stingray but have thought about the added versatility of the HH. For me the best settings were the usual bridge pickup alone, and the two outer coils which resembled a J bass tone to my ears.

However I think you have identified a serious problem for me in the obstruction caused by the neck pickup placement. I don't slap all the time but that pickup would bug me.

  5. An excellent interview.

I like Scott and I've learned so much from his videos over the years which has not cost me a penny.

His passion for our instrument is so obvious but I would offer only one bit of constructive criticism- he needs to shorten the questions as he does tend to ramble on a bit.

  6. I've just finished my copy that the Mrs bought me for Xmas and it was as excellent as I expected.

I agree with @wateroftyne's comments above, he is a very likeable and down to earth writer and gives a fascinating account of his experiences.

Lots of interesting technical details about producing, studios, techniques etc, although apart from a reference to his Wal 5 string I would have liked a bit more nerdy info about the bass gear he has used over his career.

On that note I've been watching the 2004 Princes Trust gig and he's actually a bangin' bass player! The bass is lovely and forward in the mix although hardly surprising- Trevor himself produced the sound of the DVD recording.

Get the book, you won't be disappointed.

I’m thinking of swapping the pickup, which I think is the latest alnico one, on my 2019 Fender FSR Mexican precision for a Fender ‘63 pure vintage.
anyone have experience of this and do you think it would be worth it?

Sorry but that really is a really tasty looking P bass.

No opinions to offer on pickups I'm afraid though 😁

I caved in today and bought a Ray35. Not the purple one but the vintage sunburst with roasted neck.

If I end up gigging the Ray35 as my main bass I'll likely upgrade one of my Ray25CAs to the purple 35 then. Hopefully the tuner issue might be sorted by then too.

I've got the 4 string version of this, bought s/h from this site.

    It's light (3.8kg) and wonderful.

I suppose you have done this the right way: the intonation should be set with new strings only. Dirt and wear affect the intonation.

I did immediately change the strings as I had a new set handy and was going to do it anyway at some point.
