  1. When I set the intonation on my Ray34 by measuring the harmonic at the 12th fret then checking the fretted tone and adjusting as needed until perfect I noticed a problem: once I've got it perfect at the 12th fret I checked the tuning at the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th frets and the tuning was out (sharp).

I've never noticed this before but I'm convinced I can actually hear it now I'm listening out for it.

Is this normal and can anything be done about it?

Is this the reason why fan fret basses were invented?

  2. Thanks for posting this, I've enjoyed reading about your musical journey. I would love to be able to immerse myself in deepening my musical knowledge and experience the way you have but personal commitments prevent me from doing so at the moment.

Dare I ask... what basses you own?

Just to be transparent, I work for Yamaha, my role being to sell Yamaha, Ampeg and Line 6 products.  Any help I can offer in that area, then I will do my best, I might even be able to run a few prototypes past you for some opinions here and there.

Good to have you on board @pembroke151

Is there anything interesting in the pipeline from Yamaha basses?

  4. It is more a question of whether LIVE bass guitar has a future.

The rise of live music using backing tracks and sequenced bass is the issue more than the future of bass guitar itself. I've seen several gigs which have not used live bad guitar despite the original records featuring it.

I believe there will always be a constituency of people who will want to see and hear live, real bass guitar just as people will continue to play money to hear an orchestra.

Bass guitarists should promote and celebrate our instrument.

Well nearly got it.. Was initially looking at a P Bass but there just not my thing tonally.  So looked for a 4 string Jazz to go with my Atelier 5 without spending £thousands.. This fits the bill. Have heard great things in as much as build quality etc. Didn't want to mod it, just pick it up and play.. I really like gold and white, not sure about the gold pick guard so will change that out for a dark brown tort maybe.

I think these may be sought after in years to come maybe.? Got it fairly cheap too. Ill take it to rehearsal and see how it sounds through the Aguilar.. 😎

I just bought my white Yamaha BB414  back after selling.

Only sold it as I needed the space in the house. Now bought it back and am delighted go have it home. Still have my BB734a which is an awesome bass with considerable upgrades on the BB414, but I just constantly fiddle with the active electronics between every song.

The BB 414 I just plug it in and play

And the 414/424/2024 is just 'sexier' looking

I can now join this thread as I'm the proud owner of a BB414.

First time Yamaha owner, I was originally after a low-to-mid range Squire/Fender P to mess around on but after spotting this for ~£150 delivered, I pulled the trigger.

Couldn't be happier, neck is nice and slim and it feels great to play. Needs a setup and a clean so will be doing that before properly putting it through its paces. Has some cracks in the lacquer by the pickups but I'm not fussed about that all - in fact I'm dead impressed overall for the notes spent on it.

Not me.... really great basses.... I asked Hooky if there would be anymore.... he said yes and the he was working on it with Yamaha  ... unfortunately it won't be this year sadly....

£1400 is ridiculous unless the person doesn't want to actual play the thing and keep it in a vault like a vintage wine or something.

Saw the Stereophonics live from Cardiff stadium on BBC2 last Saturday, and saw their bass player Richard Jones rocking a lovely black BBP34 the whole time. Looked awesome!

I think they look really tasty but this has got me thinking... are there any well known players that regularly use the P34/35?
