  1. If I had the spare cash I'd buy a new one from Viv - probably in black with the roasted neck. Re your HPF comment, my Mullarkey came with black nylon-coated flats fitted and that will be a factor. They sounded surprisingly good in rehearsal so I've decided to keep them on for now. What strings are you using?
  2. For such a small outfit they sure do. Bought the HPF online for around 90 bucks, had it delivered to a contact in Toronto and his parents who are my neighbours brought it back with them after a visit. Bit of a hassle at the time but well worth it.
  3. Friday night was my first chance to gig my recently-acquired Wilcock Mullarkey and it delivered everything I had hoped for. Up there with the best in terms of quality and playability, it sits perfectly in our 4-piece mix running through my Ampeg SVT-7 Pro head and LFSys Monaco FR/FR cab, even managing to cut through the powerful lows that our guitarist's new Strat puts out. Can't believe my luck in finding this mint pre-owned example at Bass Direct in my preferred colour and reasonably priced at £1950 for a retail sale. Just by the bye, I'm finding that another important bit of kit in delivering 'heft with definition' is the Always On HPF I recently got from Broughton Audio in Canada. My amp delivers 600w into my 600w-rated cab and I got the HPF to protect the driver from potentially damaging low frequencies. Much to my surprise, this tiny box of tricks does as much for my tone-shaping as my bass and amp controls. I just set everything up as I always did ands then find the frequency floor that gives me the best sound. Shame they don't sell in Europe but luckily I was able to get mine via a contact living in Canada. I know this may seem a bit off topic but I have a feeling that an HPF is especially effective when applied to the signature tones of short-scale basses.
  4. My band played one of our two annual freebie gigs at the Globe in Somerton. We do these in return for them letting us use their functions room whenever we need to rehearse. Last night we were in the main pub area and as usual it got pleasantly crowded. Although all 4 of us are gig-hardened, the band is relatively new and it was good to feel that our improvement trend continues. The steps are small now but still satisfying. This turned out to be one of those rare gigs where you leave with such a buzz that you don't care whether you get paid or not. Everyone was up dancing - including the staff in between serving - and the whole place was bouncing. The sound of live music was pulling passers-by in off the street and the place was so full early into the second set that some folks who couldn't get in ended up dancing on the pavement looking in through the window (see pic). Fitting in musically and socially with the band, making good equipment choices, learning new stuff, connecting with the punters, improving my own performance level ... there's so much to being a gigging bass-player. I found it intoxicating when I started playing 50 years ago and I still do.
  5. I love the headstock on that SHR s-s. Certainly increases your choice of off-the-peg hard cases.
  6. Structurally sound wooden case with light-to-medium external road wear and built like the proverbial brick out-house. Custom-made for a Wilcock Mullarkey, which it fits like the proverbial glove, but would be easily adaptable to fit anything else that's not too long for it. Price excludes delivery for which the buyer will be responsible. If you're interested ping me a PM and I'll send pics and confirm dim's.

  7. SPECIAL OFFER!! Free Gillett T-shirt with every pre-owned Contour bass sold on this topic!! Terms & Conditions: The buyer must be size XL.
  8. Yes it has, thanks for asking. Delivered around 2pm yesterday. Perfect timing as the band was working on some new numbers last night. I unpacked it to make sure all was in order (which it was), had a quick play and parked it until the practice. The short answer to your question is I'm loving it!! I hadn't said anything to the other members of the band but much to my surprise they were all over it with 'Ooos' and 'Wows' as soon as I took it out of its gig bag. Much more important than that, they were very complimentary about the way it sounded as the evening went on. For rehearsals I go through a Mesa D800+ and Barefaced SC3 with amp EQ pots centred at 12 o'clock. A few tweaks of the 'voicing' and HPF controls and experimentation with the low boost quickly found the right 'default' sound with both pickups selected on the bass. The Mullarkey has a robust but well-defined presence that sits very nicely in the mix. This is timely because our guitarist's new Strat has very dominant lows that were competing with my stuff. Can't wait to hear this bass through my Ampeg SVT-7 PRO and LFSys Monaco gig rig a week on Friday. More later.
  9. As the owner of an electro-acoustic Gillet (the black nylon-coated strings are standard OE) and ex-owner of a few Maruszczyks I agree that these strings and Adrian's basses are definitely a mis-match.
  10. This one comes with black nylon-coated flats and I'm looking forward to hearing how that sounds. I looked at a few online reviews a while back and seem to recall one of the reviewers saying the Mullarkey sounds awesome with those strings. Mark at Bass Direct reckons they're one of the best kept bass-playing secrets out there.
  11. YEEE-HAAA!! Just bought a pre-owned Wlcock Mullarkey from Bass Direct 🙂 Same colour as the one recently sold on here by Clarky but with a scratch-plate from the red end of the tort spectrum. Will be delivered Tuesday - can't wait. Watch this space!
  12. And here's the last instalment from the prolific lens of of resident Bash photographer-cum-food dispenser Janey Scrumpette. As the last shot shows, it was just about warm enough for a few hardy souls to dine 'al fresco'. As in previous years, special thanks are due to Phil Starr for his thought-provoking (and myth-busting) shoot-out, and to Stevie for bringing a selection from his truly excellent range of LFSys FRFR cabs. I've had a top-of-the-range Monaco for a few years now and wouldn't use anything else. If you're thinking about investing in any of his products, don't hesitate. You won't regret it. HALL BOOKED FOR SUNDAY 11 OCTOBER 2026!! 🙂
  13. And the next lot!
  14. Here's a few more contenders.
  15. Does he like chocolates?
  16. And here's a few more pic's - at last!! In order of appearance: GrahamT; Charliebass; Basstone getting to grips with chyc's (Christopher) UB; Rosie and her gorgeous bunny bass; Neepheid playing the amazing Lego bass built by Rosie's partner Andrea; various; one of Jabba's builds; group pic. More to follow!
  17. The HB and its new owner - or rather the brother of the its new owner 🙂
  18. And it's thanks again to Sabby from me and Mrs S for the great food she brought to the party and for following up with the recipes 🙂
  19. I'd like Ibanez to increase their s-s range. I've got lots of time for the brand as far as value for money goes.
  20. And the real answer is - 10am. But we'll be there from 8.30 and anyone coming early to help with set-up gets something for breakfast and lots of brownie points (redeemable in Heaven).
  21. Wow, that's an absolute beaut!! I had a very similar looking fretted version. These are lovely basses. GLWTS
  22. Like the man said, it's this Sunday the 12th. It would be great to see you again if you can make it 🙂
