1.
There was actually one small disappointment. It didn't come with one if those nice gig bags...
When i got V7 (when they first came out) I emailed Sire about the bags and they sent me two free of charge (i had planned on getting a second V7, but haven't bothered yet). Now THATS good customer service :-) I see that Thomanns sell them for £60 now. They are nice bags but nothing you cant get close to for less money if you actualy need a bag and not just looking for a complete package.
2.
Seriously thinking of selling my Am Syd Jazz and getting one of these. Only concern is the necks - are they thin? Thick? As comfy, more come or less comfy to play than a Jazz? This is the problem with mail ordering a bass. Spose now that Andertons do them I can send it straight back if it doesn't feel good.
Funnily enough I was going to post this question as well. Although Ive got the 5 string I'd like to get the 4 string as well. To me the necks look chunky (for a jazz neck) but that could be to do with the blocks and binding. I really like the tone of my 5 string but don't need the extra string, so want to replace my Squier CV jazz, which Ive been playing a lot lately. I'm sure I won't have any issues with the 4 string neck, but was going to ask, as my CV jazz neck is the most perfect neck Ive every used so I was wiondering how close the Sire might be. Also has anyone changed the bridge on the 4 string? I noticed the string spacing is 20mm, but all my other bases have a Gotoh 201 which is 19mm and a bit more comfortable. Was also thinking I'd put one of these on the Sire if it fits.
3.
I use a very similar set up to you. GK Barefaced BB2 and Super Compact. Unlike others I tend to not have the gain up high on this amp, my preference is for the master up higher. Most of the controls at 12 o'clock, with the mids boosted up a bit more. Switches on top off.
I think thats the way GK advise as well and this too works for me (although i have the MB800 ). I have channel 2's gain maxed out though, and control this with the Master for that channel. Gives a nice warmer tone when needed using the foot switch.
4. Well they cant be much good if he is giving them all away ;-)
5. I got my 60B working, but had to plug in my 50G to get the drivers working. Bonus though as there is also an update for the 50G that has the TC Corona chorus pedals in it. Now my sons 50G will become my chorus pedal.
6. My PC (windows 10) wont even see my 60B as anything other than a generic device that has stopped working (so effectively it wont see it). Anyone got any ideas what to try?
7.
I play a monthly jazz gig in a bar with a group of people who can't be bothered to rehearse, they just want to do the gigs. We have maybe 1 rehearsal every couple of months, where we run through the same 15 songs, and don't really practice properly as a group, we just run through the set and go home. So of course the band sounds sloppy. Reasons for not rehearsing are that everyone is busy with work, we all live miles away from each other and they don't like paying for expensive rehearsal spaces in the areas we can all get to (i.e. central London). So do I stay with this band? It can be fun, and we all get on, but if the band sounds crap in front of an audience (which it often does) I want nothing to do with it. Or is it unreasonable to expect everyone to commit to regular practice?
If you dont like the way the band is being run, you need ot leave. no matter what others say, its you that has the issue so only you can decided what to do. Personally ive never wanted to rehearse regularly once the band has start gigging. On the other hand my last band rehearsed a lot because the guitarist was still learning the songs ad didnt feel confident. This would mean the rest of us giving up more time and money that we felt we didn't want to keep doing......and still we fell apart on a few occasions due to the guitarist forgetting things.
8.
Chill guys, 'shell posted in good humour. We'd had a laugh about it after the jam last night.
I dont really have a problem, but when someone ridicules a song i like i prefer to stand up for it, especially when said person has gone to a Blues Jam as if thats ok lol. Signing off this one now.
9.
Sounds like a good choice. It always kills me when people here on BC complain about songs that people in an everyday audience actually like enough to sing along to and get up and dance. Maybe we should all play really obscure jazz that people hate so we can go off and smirk at how much cleverer and musically hip we are. Of course, our audience would end up being just us playing to/with ourselves . . .
Well said. couldn't agree more. I like (although not love) playing the song, and have no issues playing it if asked to at a gig. Im there to entertain and i dont care if anyone on here thinks is embarrassing or not.
10.
My point is to take the piss out of an old mate. :-)
Yes, but considering you were both at a Blues jam it works both ways i guess ;-)
11.
An eminent BC member rocks up to my local Blues Jam last night. He gets up and plays a couple with the regulars. Then HE ASKS to do Mustang Sally!! I think he should now be given the opportunity to come along here and explain himself. And to beg forgiveness from the BC collective
Whats your point? Are people not allowed to like this song because other people dont?. And going to a blues Jam must be like playing Mustang Sally all night to a room full of these bass players anyway. Give me MS any night of the week over 10mins long blues w***s.
12. Thanks. I did go and buy it, along with the M1 app. Agree about the tones, they are first class. Ive record a bit with it but i do find GB to be easier.
13. I stopped using my Jazz bass (a few times) because of this issue. I'd say its definitely room dependent. Playing on hollow stages seemed to make this worse as well. I love the jazz bass tone, but i find i have less issues with a P bass.
14. Haha, yes it was you, and im glad you didnt, im not sure this would have worked as well ;-)
15.
The DB Technology stuff sits between the Alto/Behringer stuff and the RCF range but they're owned by RCF, we've got the RCF735s for FOH but the DB 10" ones for the wedges and they sound pretty good, the 12 or 15 inch ones would be cracking and worth the investment over the Alto imo.
Based on advice on here last year my band went from someone old Peavey 1x15's and desk/power amp , to a pair of DB 750's. Amazing transformation and so lightweight. I can now carry both speakers at the same time, as opposed to struggling with one Peavey speaker for the past 14 years. Sound wise they are great. The low end has a nice tight kick to it. No issues with putting our kick drum and a bit of bass through them. In fact we did one gig where the whole band went through this PA and we got shouted at to turn down. We were very loud but not in a distorted indistinct way. We paid about £350 each for them and its the best investment the band has every had.
16. A bit late to this thread but here are my views, based on also wanting a bit of tube warmth and not OD as such. I had a BBDI (second version, but NOT the new MKII). I loved it to death. It took me a while to realise the Blend knob is the key to getting a tone i wanted without getting lost in the mix. Just a little goes a long way. I swapped it out for a Paradriver, but never really clicked with it. Went back to the BDDI. I tried a VTBass (mk1) for one gig and hated it, back to the BDDI. I then heard about Darkglass so got a VMT, liked it enough to get the VMTD (first version). Liked it even more as i was going through a phase of wanting a bit more dirt to my tone, but still missed the Tech21 tone after a while. Then i got the VTBass DI, for home use, and fell in love with it. I was a bit apprehensive as i hated the VTBass, but i had been borrowing a friends VTBass to try at home and it sold me on giving it another go. To me this is the most versatile of the lot, and im amazed at warm and thick the tone can be, while still getting the tone of the bass. I did then start to miss the DG tone, so got another VMT. Quickly sold that to get the VMTD Ultra, didnt like that so brought my VMT back. These days the VMT does live duties, as i feel it works well for what we do. The VTBass DI is still better, but i find its more of a complete Pre amp, so better for home use for me. The DG tone seems much darker, but works well with my GK MB800 head. IMO a Markbass head (especial the older ones) and a BDDI/VTBass is a killer warm tone, that many seem to agree with. I expect when i start using my Markbass F1 head again then ill start taking the VTBass DI back out.
17. Oooh, timely thread (well, ive only just noticed it). Im using a iRig HD at the moment with my ipad pro. Its ok, i dont think i have any issues. Was thinking of getting the One Pre though, as it seems like it uses a more readily available cable (ive had ot replace the IK lead twice so far). Anyway, im trying to find out if the One Pro sounds any better, and has better latency than the iRig. All i need is to get my passive bass in to Ampkit or GB so i can play along with Spotify when learnign new songs. Im well aware any advice could be biased from someone that works for one of these companies, but i dont think id get poor info from someone as respected as Si :-)
18. Thanks for the replies. The one im looking at is about £80 so yes, worth a punt. I have been using computer speakers and while they are loud enough the bass sounds like a guitar (for obvious reasons). So yes, i want a bass tone but at a very low level. It will go on my sons shelve next to his PC speakers so anything larger than a 1x8 would be overkill. I do plan on using a Markbass F1 head but will be very, very careful with the volume.
19. Does anyone use one of the above for home practice? Im looking for some thing very small (smaller than a 1x10) just for the odd occasion i dont want to use headphones.
20. The most versatile one Ive had (and still do) is the VTBass DI. I know its not the best but its the one i use for home practice the most, and you can turn the cab sim on and off. Personally i dont pay much attention to the cab sims, other than they are just part of the overal EQ system. sometimes ill have it on, sometimes not, but never on just because I'm not using a cab etc. I do have a DG VMT and as Danny said, it is a bit darker sounding, which I find is ok for live gigs with a rig, but a bit too dark as just a preamp without a rig. to me this is an addition to a preamp rather than an all in one.
21. Ive only ever owned 2 MIM's, and both were horrible to play. I did gig a Squier CVP for about 3-4 years with no issues at all. Must have done well over 100 gigs with it. In fact i still have it and it works perfectly. To me the neck feels like one of the most comfortable P necks ive ever played (apart from my Sanblasted P neck). Very slim and finished in a nice gloss. The only thing ive not liked about the CV's is the bridge spacing. The HM bridges are 20mm between string centres, as opposed to 19mm that i find more comfortable. A Gotoh 201 sorts that out though.
22. I did this a few years ago. I brought a Behringer BD21 for this reason. Worked extremely well except it felt very strange hearing my sound only coming from in front of me through the monitor.
23. Cheers guys. Plenty to chase up, and maybe one or two i wont bother with.
24. With a new band on the horizon im having a geographical shift south of the river for rehearsals. I need some recommendations on rehearsal studios in the Clapham area, if anyone has any. its about half way between mine (Southwark) and the guitarist (Norwood). Not looking for anything fancy, just a clean environment with decent vocal PA and drum kit. Not worried about back line as we will use our own. Im able to find some, but id rather get some first hand experiences before booking anything if possible. cheers. Oh, and we could do with a drummer as well :-)
25. I dont do a lot of recording (or playing music for that matter) but i do like to tinker around in Garage band on my ipad pro. I came across Korg's Gadget app yesterday and was impressed with the Youtube videos i saw. I dont see much talk about this app, and its hardly cheap at £19, so i thought id ask the experts here to see what you guys think, especially compared to Garage band. Not actually worried about the cost, just wondering if its good enough keep up with GB as far as song writing goes. Im very partial to the old Korg sounds but dont want to go down the route of buying any softsynths. This would be purely for fun, as i also have Sonar on my PC for any serious recording.
