1. Thank for the replies thus far. The gear is usually either a Rowland bass micro cube or a cheapo practice were amp. So I would definitely agree with gear shortcomings. So instead of 7th, what would work as passing notes in a basic run whilst peddling on the 7th and minors, please.
2. Now I admit to being a pretty poor bass player. I'm improving, but there you go. I play electric bass for a Uke orchestra (34 inch scale Jazz). ( I stand at the back for gigs) The sound is obviously high and thin without me peddling away at the low end. But when I apprgiate say, a 7th it doesn't seem to 'fit' sometimes. Why? Other times there seems to be nothing in the middle. The song sounds hollow(?) This seems to be most apparent when doing something like Swords of a thousand men. I guess the question is how do I fill up the low and the middle and the drum space? Should I be moving away from the nut end more often? I should add, we don't rehearse much, everyone just likes to get in there and play songs. So I get a 3 verse shot at sorting a bass line out, so simple answers would be best please. I should add that amateur Uke orchestras are superb places to learn to listen because the beat can/ does change with the difficulty of the chords, which means developing lots of flexibility.
3. Many thanks for all the advice so far. She looks in on this thread and has been blown away by your positive 'do it' attitude and sends her thanks. She's currently looking at a Thoman shorty P bass. But come to think of it, I haven't laid hands on my fretless U bass for several weeks... Wonder if I'll ever see it again... :-)
4. Hi all, I appear to have gained an apprentice bass player. I've been asked to offer advice, maybe even find a bass for a soon to be chair bound young lady. So, are there any wheelchair users out there able to offer any opinions, please? Money is quite tight so the cheapest, most playable option would probably be best. Hoping to train her up to be deputy bass in our Uke orchestra. But U basses are too pricey. Also the ambition lies in playing a giant bass a'la Suzi Quattro for limited standing up and posing. (don't we all start wanting to be playing and posing?) Is there such a thing as a wheelchair friendly bass, short scale, small body, light in weight and playable? Thanks, Ade
5. Well, we'd have to use Uke basses in the phone box. But it's a start.
6. Thanks Bluejay, the big and small event blogs give some idea as to how these events go. I would certainly come along to look and learn and meet up. Just as an aside, is there a wish list of things to make a bass bash happen, a sort of 'how to organize a Bass Bash' guide anywhere. Just so as we can appraise any venues we find with respect to shortlisting them. I'm guessing, the list goes Suitable venue, transport (public & private) Availability Price Date So do the needs of a Bassbash choose the venue, at least if we have that we may know where to start. Wirral Bass Bash in a phonebox, anyone?
7. Thanks for the views, I'm still at that newbie stage where I have to think quite a lot of the time, so often find it trips me up. The work bass is an Ashton, acoustic with pickup and tuner, The pride of the fleet is an American special Jazz. So there is a large difference in the playing of these two.
8. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TtdIbnEhJAI Sorry if this has been lined to before, but I couldn't find much bass history on this site and thought this worth posting.
9. For learning to play the basics these are absolutely brilliant. http://www.pianowand.com/ 4 chords, and the world is your oyster.
10. So, silly question probably. I have a 32 scale beaten up practice bass in the van at work, for lunchtimes. Then I come home to 34s. Should I be flattening the licks by a semitone, or more on the 32 so my fingers land in the right place on the 34s? IE playing A position on 34 and in Aflat on 32? I keep trying to by beaten up 34s and instead end up spending too much on stuff I daren't take to work and expanding the home collection.
11. Progress report as requested. I've been putting the hours in and am now playing Bass with the local Ukulele orchestra. It's one of the more junior Uke groups locally so its not so high pressure and there are a lot of music stands peep at... Although a duff bass note stands out and makes me keen to get it properly right next time. I also dabble at Uke ing in order to sight read the chords like I sight read the guitarists hands. It's also driving me to study simple theory so currently all is going quite well. Simple theory being what I understand vs stuff I don't understand, yet. And there's not much I understand. Although I now have a severe case of GAS, they are all 34s. Still to actually try a U bass properly. Still to actually work with a drummer. Still going between Uke, 6 string and Bass and all are improving steadily.
12. Well, just to update, this never got built. But thanks for the info.

Hoots Mon

So, I'll admit to a slight Ukelele issue. I'm playing electric Bass for the local Uke Orchestra. One of the set is Hoots mon. We play A/|D/|A/|E7| A/|D/AE7|A/| A/|D/AE7|A/| A/|A/|G/|G/| A/|A/| hoots mon! There's a... So what I would like to know is how to add some oomph. The Ukes are chord strumming and straight bass apregios/walking don't seem to give the song the lift the original has. Also how does the Bad Manners version get its regge vamp? Thanks, Ade
14. Ditto to the above. A good bloke and a good bloke to deal with.
15. Well, here I am lolloping about in the foothills of bass knowledge, learning a bit more each day. The metronome is giving me a hard time, but it's paying off. Got scales, Arpeggios etc after a fashion. Now a friend got a drum kit for Christmas and is still going with it in late January. So in the spirit of mid life crisis, we've decided to form a Rhythm section and see how it goes. So how do I assess his progress? What's the secret to getting a good tight sound out of us? Are there any tricks and tips for making it work, and are there pitfalls we should avoid? Many thanks.
16. May I ask what app or programme I need to use to open these, please.
17. Ah, yes, sorry I didn't provide the full explanation. Work is a small lorry, often in the middle of nowhere, that can provide me with either 12, 24v DC or 110 volts AC. The 12 volt supply is really weedy. I've never tested the 24v supply. I have a short scale acoustic bass in there at present, but was thinking of trying to make use of one of my electric 34 inch scale bases. Buying 34 inch acoustic especially could be cruel as it is a tough and un (instrument) friendly environment. Hence wondering if anyone had ever grafted 12 v straight to the LV side of the equipment. I half suspect that as the Rowland micro bass uses 6 x 1.5 volts that I may be needing 9 volts. But the Artec Cubix G2R taks 10 x1.5 v so maybe 15 or 7.5 volts. I guess the question is, what voltage is the low side, please?
18. I was wondering (and searching) if anyone has converted a defunct practice amp to 12 volt operation successfully. I was given a Rocktek amp with a duff power supply. A dead PC donated its PSU to get it going again. But I am just wondering about converting it to 12 volt operation by striping out the PSU and wiring 12 volts direct. (though an appropriate fused connector, of course) I'll be hoping to run a passive Bass through it for lunchtime practice sessions at work, so it doesn't need to be loud. I know I really should just get on and try it, but as I have to wait for the weekend to do anything, I thought I would check to see if its been done already. Many thanks.
19. Chris has been a pleasure to deal with. I would definitely buy again with total confidence.
20. Sorry if this is in the wrong forum. Please move if required. I'm looking for basic information such on what pattern to use for what song. ie to get an appropriate drum rack for say 'In The Midnight Hour'. I've got a borrowed DR3 and it's quite a bit cleverer than me. Where would I go to find info like how many BPM of a song and what style of drum accompaniment would fit? And more specifically, given my beginner status, what question should I actually be asking into google to find out what I need? Currently my searches don't seem to yield the right answers. Many thanks.
21. Can I ask the scale length, please.
