1.
My only experience of a Wal was about 15 years ago, watching someone else play one over the course of a few months. That distinctive and and rich growl is something I can mentally recall to this day. It was thoroughly inappropriate for 90% of the material he was playing, but it was one hell of a tone. Aesthetically it was just the headstock for me- a bit like Plug from the Bash Street Kids! That 'All Growl' tone would be very useful as part of a toolbox of basses but, even as a player by trade, the cost would outweigh the benefits for me. If they were cheaper or I had the dosh I'd certainly give one a fair shot though, much as with a Rick 4003.
. But you'd have thought that in this day and age it would be easy peasy to recreate the Wal tone via software - say using a Line 6 gadget.
 2. No one forces users to read posts. If you don't like what someone has to say then don't read anything with their name on it.
 3.
Have you not stirred up enough trouble yet? Baiting the mods - you fed up of being a member on here or something?
And you felt the need to intervene why?
 4.
Fcuk off....
How rude! Not just rude of you but your two sycophants.
 5.
I'll usually go straight to YouTube and find a tutorial where someone has already nailed the song and is showing you how to play it. Many times the bass part is isolated. After I learn the song then I will put my personal spin on it. Blue
Absolutely works for me. Plus you get to see many different interpretations of the same song.
 6. Thread finished. Nothing to see here. Move along now.
 7.
Perhaps a new hobby would soak up some of the vitriol? https://www.youtube....h?v=4wHIGeP17Eo
Tried it once but the buggers just kept droning on and on and on. Then they started a union and demanded more honey and shorter working flowers. I jacked it in after that.
 8. Now - could someone tell me why they would buy a Fodera at the price they go for? When I think of them I see sheiks buying gold plated Range Rovers. I just think "Really?!?!?!".....
 9. Cheers Rob Makes complete sense. For me it is the look. I think they look home made - but I hear what you are saying re: the Wal tone and sound.
 10.
Please tell me that's not a euphemism.
It is not a euphemism.
 11.
I have a table and chairs as a give-away if it helps. Could be a really solid investment opportunity. Great condition for it's age (mid '90s); tone to die for... Eh? Eh?
What's the action like on the chairs? I don't want it set too low or it is difficult to reach my cutlery.
 12.
Now I have sideboard GAS!
You could buy a Wal and get a local joiner to convert it for you. Wouldn't take much effort! In fact just take the strings and neck off and you are pretty much there. Boom, boom.
 13. My preference would be another ACG actually. I did offer on a Warwick but was unsuccessful.
 14.
This must be the most extreme case ever of a disguised advert. Do you think Davey-Schmavey has managed to sell his Wal yet?
Jacky Wacky Sold my ACG last week actually. Buyer is away for the October break and will conclude on his return. I am most certainly not selling a Wal. Couldn't afford one. Would only buy as an investment anyway as I simply don't care for them as an instrument.
 15.
so are you saying that Wals are art?
Nope - but they do seem to present as an excellent investment.
 16.
Back on the original point, I walked into a music shop in around 1996 with £800 burning a hole in my pocket they had two second hand basses on the wall for £800...a wal custom and a musicman stingray V. I had lusted after a wal for years after listening to mick Karn, geddy Lee and a couple of local guys...walked out the shop with the musicman after spending around 40 mins playing the wal. Neck profile was just not good for me and it was heavy....sounded great but I couldn't get comfy playing it. Lesson learned.
But just think. I you'd have bought the Wal it would be worth a fortune. You wouldn't even need to play it. Just leave it gathering dust and increasing in value year on year.
 17.
They should be used for firewood. Hang on, I appear to have walked into the wrong thread
Nope - I think you are in the right place!
 18.
Those options are not mutually exclusive.
You are correct - and who wouldn't want to buy something nice and have a good return on it when selling on? Says more about market forces than the intrinsic value of the product being purchased - which is the point I was trying to make 100 posts ago.
 19. So - quite a number of posters have mentioned the gains they have made by selling on Wals for 2, 3 and 4 x the original cost. I can't help but draw parallels between art lovers who invest in art as opposed to those who are invested in the art - if you get my distinction. Is a Wal bass an investment (like property in a good area) or is it a purchase from the heart?
 20.
Should a similar fate befall those here who whine..? Hmm... Maybe a poll is due...
Sucked the life right out of the thread with that one Dad3353.
 21.
Meanwhile, in Saudi Aribia, a 3 times cancer surviving 73 year old man is expecting 350 lashes for having wine.
What's your point?
 22.
Tell me Blood Sugar is not a great bass tone.
Perhaps so - but I would argue this is more to do with Flea using an octaver than a Wal. Back to my decaf. Coming down now.......
 23. I always felt the Rickenbacker bass looked like the box that the Rickenbacker 6 string came in.
