The zoom b2.1 won't power a cab. How about a tiny little compact 200w(ish) head like Trace Elliot Elf and a lightweight cab like a TC 2x10. They make a really light plastic cab which sounds OK.

    Thanks

I really wanted small and cheap but I’ll bear your suggestion in mind

i've recently given away all my heavy heavy monster sound stuff and am now getting a minimalist mix'n'match of ultra light replacement gear

i currently have a B2.1u as pre/DI - only mW from the phone o/p, so some amp certainly needed

I have a 5W real (internal 3-4 hr rechargeble) DIY amp into Fane 12" tube for ultra portability (

going up a notch i have an FRFR-like Behringer MPA40BT (8" driver, bluetooth aux in, 2 mic/inst channels with B&Treb, 10W real for 5+ hours from internal rechargeable battery) - good for small acoustic-oriented gigs and band practice (2 guitars + eKit, soft rock) - great portable bass sound

Could you take a picture of the thing in bold? I can google the last one

  3. I went by your profile. Piece of advice, start with a jam session (see below) and just observe first time. I talked to the drummer at my local one and he gave me their basic set list to pick from. Take your bass and commonly people will strike up conversation. Be honest about your abilities and they’ll support you

I’d avoid open mic nights to start with as a) bass is not generally a solo instrument and the guitarists who run them don’t get that and b) you need to spend time at each to find someone who wants to collaborate with a bass player. Since they are usually acoustic types, turning up with an electric instrument generally indicates a lynching is imminent.
I got very lucky with a young lady who organises my local OM as all sorts come to her nights and she’s good at matching people up and supporting them but that’s not normal

    Greg many thanks for this!

I just found this today and it is exactly what I was looking for - really helpful.

I’m still a novice but my dream is to be competent enough one day to play at a blues jam 👍

You’re only in Leicester, how mobile are you ? I go to a few around Coalville, Groby, Ashby

I don't consider anything with more than 4 strings to be a "bass". Just unnecessary complication....

I agree, but at least a five / six string bass is not weedy-sounding or wielded by a guitard

  6. I have one.
please don’t mention the “six string” thing unless the word following it is “bass”; Amazon have got fresh stocks of tar and feathers in now 😛

  7. He hasn’t actually said how many he has in total. It may well be that his actual count of “about 20”** is a mere ripple in the headstock count of others here

allowing for “had since a teen/mum bought it/Found it in a skip and nursed it back to health/its my pension/significant birthday/partner doesn’t know” extras

    Is Mirkwood a great tonewood?

It depends, if you don’t like the idea of sentient bass bodies that are fairly unhappy about being cut, chamfered, sanded etc then I’d say “avoid”. Unless it’s old wood and thus magically better somehow

The Mary Wallopers are getting to be quite popular in the folk world. We met them at Moseley and their performance was very good.

Maybe I just don’t  get them, I didn’t say they were not a good performance

I imagine getting a Wilma outfit in larger sizes might be a problem. :)

Happened in a band I was in. We all got an email from the band leader saying he was disbanding us.

Then got an email asking some of us to form a new band playing the same gigs and tunes.

Followed by a phone call a few weeks later from the person ejected telling me not to worry, they knew I had nothing to with it, and then venting their spleen over the cowardly band leader.

In hindsight the writing was on the wall as he did several other underhand things to eject other members over the next few years. Eventually copying the wrong people into a sensitive email and showing his true colours. Quite humorous looking back on it now.

Slightly off topic but my brother is exactly like that. You think you’re having a private conversation and then you see “cc: <name> “ where idiot intended to bcc:

    fool me once …

I don’t talk to him as he has a trust ability rating slightly below “Donald trump”

yes granted . 🙂 It was more of a memo to myself, as I and others have contributed to old threads in the past and they soon died off again . That's why I deleted my previous post here . Apologies to all offended . I will probably checkout the recommendation should I get the enthusiasm to do so 🙂

Wasn’t offended at all. Just saying this one wasn’t due yet, had a couple more years in the metaphorical sherry cask to wait
